I'm about 25 years into being a beginner drummer now... and about a month ago I ran into a 22inch K Con at the local shop..."used" (New K Con, not vintage) ... the price seemed insane ($540) ... but I played it... and suddenly began a new chapter in my drumming saga. I sacrificed a bit and ...pseudo irresponsibly bought it a week later. I'm not a master of the craft, but...I have spent most of my life with drums... having this cymbal has transformed me completely. I feel as excited as I did when I was a kid. I come home from work and skip meals and rush in there to play and explore...for the first time I really LIKE what I am hearing. I think I have been putting up with a lot of my gear for most of my life... and now I geek out over videos like this in bed, and spend all of my down time hungrily pursuing the craft again... It is incredible what finding one good cymbal can do for someone.
The perfect cymbal is one that motivates you to play it :)
I swear I could just sit down and hear John Riley for a whole day and not even be tired.
Those Ks are gorgeous, and it has to be a testament to your great technique that the 20 still survives with no cracks.
Now THIS is content that strikes the heart.
Awesome story!! I was born and raised in Astoria, NY and I remember the Gretsch Factory in Brooklyn. Proud to have a mid 60's kit from there along with a set of K's!

Such a smart individual. Great player and articulate teacher. The care he takes in muffling a cymbal after demonstrating something says it all.
It's always interesting and entertaining to hear Mr. Riley talk about music and drumming.

6:08 If I recall correctly, the K Zildjian company was putting "Constantinople" labels on their cymbals well into the 1940s, so way after 1917

Cool. Thanks John Riley for doing these videos. Great. Used to see you play when you were at North Texas years ago. My late father (drummer and music educator) thought a lot of you too. His best buddy for many years was Leon Breeden, they actually went to New York City together years ago to "try and make it".....Many great memories of Uncle Leon and visiting the campus serveral times a year when I was a kid. Thank you again for all the videos you share for drummers, very inspiring. As always thanks to Memphis Drum Shop for everything they do as well. Mr. Petit and staff the greatest. It's tough time for all musicians and creative artist. Hang in there gang. Keep swinging!!!

I specially loved the sound of the Hi-Hats. What modern pair would be closest in sound.
Those are super! I'm a 5 decade player, and you like the same things I like! I have a 20" mini cup "A" mid '60s ride, and a mid '60s 22" "A" medium ride. They have a lower pitch than any of my newer rides. I do have an Armand Ride with 3 rivets. That is a keeper too! I only play old drums too. Cheers!

Ask Zildjian to create replicas of these cymbals so others can benefit from the clean 20, higher pitched 22 and mixed old/new sock cymbals.

I'm new to your channel and you reminds me of my union brother and welding instructor. He lived in Jersey City unfortunately he was on flight 93. I have a small K under my ride if I recalled purchased used in the 80s

I got a 19 in. A that my dad bought used in 1960 that I think was a marching band cymbal due to the shape of sloted hole...is 19 inch a common size ?

I have a 20” A Zildjian ride my parents bought me in 1966. It sounds very much like these K’s. How is their construction different than today’s cymbals? What were they made of?
One big difference is volume. Today's louder music cymbals often an umbrella profile. Your 66 is pre big amp guitars you lucky devil!

2240 grams. 20 inches. Ok.hand ' hammered cymbals...22 inches. Ok....let heard.
I never got the deal with riveted cymbals played with sticks. I know they are supposed to give the cymbal a longer, more legato sound, but I just hate the sound of them. To me they just ruin the natural sound of the cymbal and make it sound cracked. John Riley is fantastic though.
