    Should of had 2 manuals or 2 DSG's with one being a standard GTI and the other the Performance pack upgrade... That would of made more sense to see if the performance pack is really worth it or not!

  • @BennettMac1
    @BennettMac1 Před 8 lety +26

    In addition to the LSD, the PP also comes with the Golf R's brakes. If you think about what it would cost to put in a diff and upgrades brakes, the money is well worth it.

      Bennett MacLauchlan Totally agree, the front rotor is massive 340mm and rear is freaking vented 310mm. Even big brake kits for some car rear are not even vented. I just bought a 17 sport which have the PP

    • @SunLoverMan
      @SunLoverMan Před 7 lety +1

      for same money you can buy wavetraq diff which is muuuch better the one PP has.

    • @BennettMac1
      @BennettMac1 Před 7 lety +4

      You can definitely buy the actually differential for less (~$1,000), but I would imagine the installation would be a few hundred on top of the actual Wavetrac purchase. Additionally, big brake kits can run anywhere from $1,200 to $2,000 depending on what you want. These might be better than the Golf R brakes for track driving, but for every day driving, there isn't much difference. All in all, the PP is a steal.

      +Daniel Costa Um, car "journalists" are doing this more and more. I just refuse to listen to them. I have a 6-speed manual and love it. DSGs are frequently problematic. The DSG in my last car was a MINI and ALL first-year editions were recalled for transmission issues! And my brother's car also had one. It also had problems. Seems some car brands still haven't fixed the poor reliability problems so I say avoid DSGs like the AIDS virus. They're going to be expensive to fix if something goes wrong.

    The front diff keeps car in line and accelerating. If you hate understeer, PP is a must. Pretty good value in my opinion. Brakes, Diff, HID are bundled in the sport trim in 2017. Sport trim also have better looking wheels imo. I hate the massive dish type.

    If you're not racing on the track, but want to keep this an inexpensive driver's car/DD, then the lighting package is the only upgrade worth paying. Base model `S` + bi-xenon adaptive headlights and cloth seats. No nav, no backup cam, no moonroof, no dual-climate control, no PP.
    Don't be sold on features you aren't gonna use. Save that ~$6k for your next car in the future or something else. You'll still be stoked on the car. I'd rather ensure I get the right exterior color and non-leather seats. If you start wanting all those other options you'll have to limit your choices or order one and wait forever. Then you'll still kick yourself a few months later when the Golf R comes out.

    • @miloschrenko6684
      @miloschrenko6684 Před 9 lety +1

      You cannot be more wrong. If there something you MUST pay it is the performance pack. The e-diff does not only make sense on a track, it´s even more useful on normal roads because it really helps in corners. Where normal FWD car would start going straight from the curve, the GTI with LSD just turns into the corner. The much bigger brakes are another bonus of Performance pack.
      So forget about sat nav, xenons etc. Go for the performance pack: the best spent money from the extras list.

    • @rkulla
      @rkulla Před 9 lety +2

      Miloš Chrenko I ended up leasing instead of buying and got an `SE` + bi-xenons. Couldn't be happier. I could have waited for the PP but then my payments woulda been more and not worth it for a lease. I don't drive enough miles to buy, and like to have a new car every few years. The PP would be nice, sure, but the GTI is already an amazing handling fwd car that already has hardly any noticable understeer. So it's really a matter of preference and budget. And after having this for over a month, I actually like the moonroof, backupcam, and leather seats. But definitely don't regret not having the crappy nav or dual-climate control of the autobahn.

    Doesn't it kinda water down the comparison when you have manual gearbox against DSG and you want to compare NOT The gearboxes but the performance with and without the performance pack? Automatic gearbox will change a lot. The feel, overall performance (like in this case the car probably shifts better with an automatic gearbox), weight of the car etc. It's a valid thing when you f. ex. compare the fuel comsumption between manual and automatic. But when the comparison point is the "performance package" it's weird that the cars aren't similar in any other way. I'm not a car expert or anything but just want to point that out.

That's just my personal opinion not everyone will be like that but if your gonna have more or less a 30K car your not gonna wanna right it off or be constantly replacing all 4 tyres at £1000 a time. I wanted to delete the leather seats and get the checkered ones but they told me there was no way to do that and keep the sunroof. Gee VW, is it THAT hard to please your customers? Sall good. Both great cars. Even the GTI without the performance pack is a great car, but having one knowing I dont have the best example of one would haunt me :-P

      I agree to a certain extent... A standard WRX in terms of price and if you're looking for pure performance... its probably the way to go... but if you factor in comfort, luxury, overall package? The gti is a better daily... hence why there are plenty more of them...
      But when you look at the top of the range WRX sti now that's where I would never get one. (Based on Australian prices) The top of the range WRX STI Type R is 72-73k driveaway... for the same price you can get the M135i, Golf R and for 82k you can get an AMG... That's where the WRX aren't doing enough.

    I would pay for the upgrade, just for the few times I would push the car. Why compare a DSG to a manual car? If it were the other way round, I think you might have liked the non-pack car better. 3 pedals is always better than 2.

    I like the GTI but the Focus RS will shit all over it when it becomes available for sale. Yeah the Golf R is nice too but it's still going to lose to the RS. VW needs to be commended for making such a plush and posh interior though. It looks like a $100,000 interior.

      I recant my words. After the price announcement and rather luke warm reviews, I'm thinking the Golf R is the better bargain.
      You can get the R for $38,000 here in Canada. That's not too bad I suppose.

    I guess I will be the hated one here, track driving is far and few between and is limited to about 5% of owners or less!! Most people want to know how it accelerates and travels over a long distance with some fuel consumption numbers!! That's fucking it... Sick of car reviewers losing their touch on realistic driving conditions!!

    It's not stupid actually. It shows that a manual PP is faster than non PP with dsg.
    I imagine a PP dsg will be even faster.
    So that differential makes the difference.
    Anyway, real world driving you won't be able to tell the difference between them.
    I have the dsg PP. I have bought the PP mainly for the bragging rights and the red GTI badges. Brakes look better too and I believe they are the only improvement that you can act6 feel although the non PP is no slouch either

      It can be faster because you can select the exact right gear for every corner before entering it and launch out immediately without having to let the automation ruin the show. He just explains in the video also. In track driving you don't have to change gears so frequently, it's mostly hitting 2nd and 3rd gear on a little track like that, so DSG's quickness doesn't necessarily help.

    • @gtiw7
      @gtiw7 Před 10 lety

      rextetron you do realize that YOU CAN indeed select the exact right gear for every corner before entering it and launch out immediately without having to let the automation ruin the show with DSG, do you? it's called Manual mode, use the pedals on the steering wheel or shifter knob....
      you're just making a noob out of yourself by saying Manual box is quicker than DSG! you may say more engaging and more fun to drive but not a way on earth it's faster!
      Regards
      owner of both Manual and DSG GTI :)

    • @rextetron
      @rextetron Před 10 lety

      gtiw7 Can you rev to the limiter with Golf's DSG? Is it a FULL manual mode like in "proper" sportscars with paddle shifters? I haven't driven a DSG on a track so I've never tried hitting the rev limiter. If the manual mode is proper, then you might be right. Anyways - here are Killarney track tests driven by same man, manual (goo.gl/2Lp46T) and DSG (goo.gl/M1wKFZ). Manual was quicker, not much though. The time difference can of course be caused by driving errors too.
