Have you ever wondered if there were easy to follow coordination exercises that you could teach your kiddos?
Maybe you've heard about "crossing midline" exercises, but are looking for a few ideas. Maybe you’ve been trying to figure out what on earth could potentially help your kiddo with reading, writing, and self-regulation and wished there was a simple group of exercises that you could teach them that they could use a self chosen movement break. Or you've heard about Brain Gym exercises but can't figure out how to do them or where to get more information.
These specific techniques/exercises can help improve motor planning, coordination, increase bilateral movement patterns, and per Brain Gym website and emerging science increase ability to read, write, and complete academic work that requires visual tracking and bilateral hemisphere use (using both sides of your brain at once).
This is perfect for kiddos struggling with self regulation, learning difficulties (copying from the board, reading, writing, memory/learning retention), sensory and coordination disorders, as well as medical diagnoses such as developmental delay, cerebral palsy, down syndrome, or low tone.

**CORRECTIONS/ADDITIONS: Eyes should be tracking thumbs during Lazy 8s (this will increase visual tracking in addition to crossing midline, which makes the activity even better, although a little more challenging!). To complete Lazy 8's specifically to the brain gym method, go in the UPWARD direction when crossing midline (the video shows going in the downward direction, which isn't bad as you are still crossing midline, but going UP is the brain gym way). Thanks to both viewers who commented to help make these videos better!

    Dear Lauren,
I was looking for brain gym exercises for my children and I found your video.
Minute 11 of your video (when you are mentioning the paper systematically on the left side of the table), that is exactly how my 8-year old daughter likes to write! And to me that always seemed so odd!
Your observation is SO useful, you just helped another family with this video - heartfelt thanks!

      Cathy,
Thanks so much for your comment! The cross crawl may be the best of the exercises for that and doing obstacle courses with crawling through a tunnel or under a blanket fort will all help with crossing midline (which is the functional task that you are seeing be impacted). Sometimes it is also a bit of functional visual strategies too that can be underlying - i do really like pencil push ups as an exercise if you want to try something else or dont fully see the paper position change with the brain gym exercises: this video is great - czcams.com/video/ghvpt3dSYfk/video.html
A developmental optometrist in your area or OTs can also help with functional vision and visual integration if that ends up looking like it might be impacting your little one. I always like to add in a few other things to note when I post comments because there can be a lot of different things that can all fit together. Proud of you for being a proactive mama! Please let me know if you have any other questions!! Lauren

Thanks Mary! My husband is from Colorado and we LOVE it there! We had the flag made with the "C" being created by New Belgium bottle caps, which was SO FUN! Yay for a fellow CO fan on youtube!

I believe in the lazy 8 you need to go up in the middle and off to the side down and around and up in the middle I am not qualified to teach

Hi Lisa! You are RIGHT! I just double checked the brain gym sheet that I have and you are absolutely correct -- good catch. I will add this to the pinned comment. Technically though, there is nothing "wrong" with going the other way as you are still crossing midline, it just likely is BETTER and more in line with brain gym's method to go up when crossing midline.
Here is the instructions I have that shows you are right :)
Lazy 8’s: Draw horizontal eight's in the air with your hands. Start at the middle, start the circle to the top left - bottom left - cross midline - top right - bottom right - repeat by crossing midline again and going toward top left.
Make sure the student is facing forward with their pelvis. They can complete this by drawing on the board, on paper, standing or sitting, or using a pointer finger or whole hand in the air.
Repeat x10 with each hand. Student may require hand over hand guidance in the beginning. Keep arm straight for most effective exercise. Per the Brain Gym Institute this activity improves: eye-muscles coordination, connection between hemispheres, bi-ocular and peripheral vision, and reading speed.

Hi Amanda, thanks for the comment. This channel’s intention is to be educational so that individuals know how to do exercises but also why the exercises are important. The style of this channel is not to have any video be a follow along style of video for kids or adults, but I am sure there is something out on youtube that fits what you are looking for. Good luck!
