Same. United used to do those sfo-ORD flights with the 747-400, but they were extremely rare. I would love an IAD-Newark flight on a United 747-400 in addition to an sfo-lax flight as well.
I can't believe that you took a domestic regional flight on a 747, that's like from the 70s and 80s before the best-selling variant of the 747 was produced. It's also sad that Lufthansa is the only airline that still flies passenger the 747-400 which is its best-selling variant...

Ist ja eigentlich traurig aber zeigt halt leider deutlich, dass die Bahn in solchen Fällen für viele immer noch keine gute Alternative ist.

Lufthansa has still 26 747s in operation.Normally Lufthansa uses Airbus A320 NEO,Airbus A321,Airbus A319 and Airbus A320 SHARKLETS for flights from Hamburg to Frankfort.This Boeing 747 400 could come from a maintenance from Hamburg.
Lufthansa still flies the 747- 800 from Frankfurt to San Francisco and back every day. ( they've replaced the A380 on that route) I think Lufthansa purchased the last new 747s in just the last few years. (So they're not old)
Where did the flight continue? LH obviously could have used a regional contract carrier for such a short flight. It doesn't make sense financially to use a 747 for a 1 hour flight.
Reasons may vary but sometimes airlines relocate an aircraft even within the same city. Some issues may be maintenance or filling up schedule. As the plane must be repositioned anyways, they put some passengers in it so it doesn't fly empty.
