Steam Railmotor 93
A look at GWR Steam Railmotor 93 operating at the Didcot Railway Centre and on a visit to the farewell to Old Oak Common Open Day.
At Didcot, we see the rail motor paired with auto coach 92 and take a ride inside the carriage on a journey along the branch.
The Railmotor, built in 1908, lost its power unit in 1934 and was converted into a conventional auto trailer. Purchased by the Great Western Society in 1970, following use as a "Work Study Coach". The new power bogie unit was constructed at Tyseley Locomotive Works in Birmingham, while the carriage was restored at Llangollen Railway, with the restoration completed in 2011.

Total respect for the Great Western Society, for doing the job properly.
They could have easily mounted the coach body on a Diesel-powered chassis, like the NER Autocar Trust did with the Raven petrol-electric Autocar.

My son is special needs and he loves trains 🚆🛤🚋🚞🚝🚊🚉🚈🚇🚅🚄🚃🚂 and he finds that steam powered railcar very interesting. He hopes it is still operating.

This video clearly shows the weakness of steam railmotors, 6 days of the week they were fine, but on market day, when the train needed strengthening, they struggled to haul a normal bogie coach.

Very interesting. I didn't know that this operating unit existed. I gather that the power unit is a newly built reproduction, the original power unit having been removed from the carriage in 1934. I still don't entirely understand how the firing of the steam engine is managed - I'd love to see video showing that.

@@retrogamelover2012 Now that you mention it, I don't believe I've ever seen a steam tram. My Uncle Stan drove trams, but they were electric, powered from overhead wires, and I thought that was pretty much the way all trams were...?
