  • Here's a boombox that looks retro but also has modern features. Let's test it out and see how it holds up against the competition!
    CORRECTION: The boombox can be powered with 8 "D" batteries and 2 "AAA" batteries, not "AA" batteries.
    UPDATE! I have taken this boombox apart and adjusted the tape playback speed. Video here: • A look inside the Vict...

Anyways…I would get the Crosley CT201A it’s a much better boombox than this one. It’s got better bass and sounds much better overall.

    I agree that the older boomboxes, maybe
    without BT and USB, from late 1970's to
    the 1980's had good receivers and tape features, such as Dolby, which is not
    licensed any more. I have bought from
    eBay, at a reputable seller two Panasonic
    Platinum RX-5000 series boomboxes, for
    some money which work well and sound
    great.

      I have the wooden paneled turntable with the front that looks like an old time radio. it looked like cheap crap but when I actually started handling it I was impressed at how sturdy it was. and opening it up, it wasn't too bad looking inside in how it was designed either. looked like real solid components and not lowest bigger cheapo circuit boards from a toy. it sounded great with FM radio too. they have made some pretty quality hardware, it seems like there was actual supervision involved on the victrola name.

  • @amnril

    The vast majority of modern boom boxes are awful compared to the devices out in the early 1980’s. This one actually ‘looks’ ok to me except for the overly bright LED’s and weird oversized cassette door however there’s no escaping the fact that it’s very low quality with no real sound quality. My 1981 JVC RC M70L is a work of art compared to this and obviously sound quality wise destroys all three of the ones in the video. A final note, that Magnavox sounded boomy, not bassy to me, was the treble turned down as it seemed lacked range thus clarity.

      So fn stupid and useless of these companies to put time and effort into replicate old school boom boxes , to never come a hair close to doing them justice , we know quality when we hear and see it with our own eyes , we're stupid , please stop making these cheap ass cheesy flimsy thin plastic toys , it's not only a let down to baby boomers that cherished those years , and would like to have something of highest quality and performance to recapture what we once had one time or another , but its an insult to the younger generation just as well who may happen to like things of the past , but why even bother nowa days when there's plenty of head phones ear buds and computer speakers that will put shame , to these poorly cloned wanna be a real boombox , wish i was a real boom box , ,, to all you companies out there, please stop this dumb retarded shit , if you're going to put time and effort into making and turning out shit , start up a fertilizing business instead , bottom line these boomboxes don't even compare to the cheapest of the old school boom boxes , stop building our hopes up as far as cosmetics, appearance , only to be let down by revealing everything that this cheap shit lacks on , please stop , money is not easy to come by , but like myself , there are people that will spend 5 to 10 times on the amount of this crap rather then to trash $129 on some shiny garbage,

    Thanks for the review. I purchased it
    for $99.99 several months ago, and
    while it works pretty well, but my cassette is not so good recording from
    say the radio or from my phone over
    BT. The cassette recording quality is
    noisy, compared to myTeac cassette deck, as I found with other retro boombox cassette recording too.
    I guess like you said, they all use the same Takashin cassette mechanism.

      I couldnt stop laughing when you
      said COMPARED TO YOUR TEAC. Teac are like the HOLY GRAIL of recording quality. No cheap boombox like this is gonna compare. You would need a classic 80s boombox with the VU needle meters to come close to a Teac. Something like a JVC RC--M70. Or Sharp GF 777. But they arent cheap. Any cheap boombox. Where you just pop in a cassette and press record wont compare in quality. The golden age of quality boomboxes was 1978 to 1987.

      @@fender1000100 Another thing people are not understanding is bluetooth or phone or any modern input is on a completely different frequency that exceeds the limitations of cassette tape formats. if you are recording to the cassette you have to "dumb down" the audio quality to a sample rate formatted for the maximum limitations of the cassette format, hence why you hear the noise.

    Magnavox got no mid-range or treble...it's just a horrible noise...with added distortion. It sounds like MOST small $30-$60 radios in 2020....i.e. crap. Radios should be CLEAR so you can hear the vocals. You don't want to listen to a talk show on a bass-box or HiFi system, etc. You just want a CLEAR little radio in the kitchen or garage. If we want portable bass, we'll buy a bass blue-tooth speaker or other solution.

    • @BrettDarien
      @BrettDarien  Před 4 lety +1

      To be fair, the distortion you hear is the bass overloading the cameras microphone. The bass boost feature is also a lot more powerful on the Magnavox than on the Sony, so turning it off on the Magnavox would give a more crisp and clear sound.

      True. But what people really value most is convenience. Digital files and streaming are king not necessarily because they sound better, but because you have instant access across multiple devices. I'm not saying it's bad; I too listen to music digitally and discover new music through CZcams. But I don't think cassettes, or CDs, should be forgotten about because digital just isn't as satisfying to interact with.

      Their smartphone is already in their hand, browsing on social media and that song they want is 3 clicks away and seconds from playing.
      I agree the nostalgia is there and i do like my cd's and cassette's but most of the songs i have on cd or cassette is here on CZcams ...
      And not to mention how technology is changing and most people keep up to date with tech and throw old tech out, leaving their children with no history of old tech. Then when you ask these teenagers what this or that is, they look at you like .... HUH ... with their smartphone in their hand .. clueless on what old tech is because their parents never showed them because their parents never kept old tech ...

      @BrettDarien  Před 3 lety

      If I ever have kids, they'll definitely know about old tech. In fact, I'd be using it in front of them and teaching them all about it because most little kids are curious and will be interested. I played with my parents old vinyl records as a kid and I started recording on cassettes when I was 10 so I've always been interested. I suppose it is different if you don't grow up with it though, like many of todays kids.
