I've just found your channel and you've got some fascinating stories. Of course I had to subscribe!
Hmmmm...I'm wondering about the rails on the wooden bridge, if they were shorter than the metal one? Did it mention if he was right in the middle of the bridge, or off to one side? I wonder if there was a bit of a jut at the bottom, where his feet could have a bit of leverage, even a couple of inches; that he could have come over the rail and slithered a bit while holding on to the rails? It does sound mysterious, but I think of 2 things - without an actual picture, it's hard to know where he could have slipped over (we are much more safety conscious today and I wonder if the rails were shorter) and 2. if something in the Penny Dreadfuls you mentioned had a similar scene.
Certainly, if he were to have wrapped the scarf at the bottom horizontal rail rather than the top one, it's a better guarantee of a successful suicide. Perhaps he thought if it was the top rail, it might not be as quick or easy of a death, considering one can bang against the rails while going down. I'm not necessarily satisfied with that answer, but just a thought.
A few of my friends are therapists and even today, it's often hard for families to accept that a loved one died by suicide. At that time, the stigma attached would have been much stronger - not only the religious element, the shame of having someone in the family doing this but also the guilt of not seeing anything wrong... to think that Ernest and a married woman were carrying on, and even with that stigma, that the latter story is preferable in their minds to suicide.
I suspect Isababelle might play more of a role in this. Perhaps they fought, perhaps she broke up with him and the fear that she would be blamed and guilt caused her to smooth it over. Of course if this was the case, it wasn't her fault at all. Or it's possible he misinterpreted something, he may have drank more than she realized, or let on. Some people don't do well with alcohol (I am that person - I get very depressed shortly after drinking, even moderate amounts. I seem to skip the tipsy/fun bit though I was never that bad as to be suicidal after drinking).
As you had mentioned, some people don't show what's going on at all deep inside. I have known a couple of people who died by suicide. One was a teenager - we were in a play together (I was an adult). I didn't know him well but had interactions with him, he was always very jolly and joking around. Then one day we found out, just before a rehearsal, that he died by suicide. I was completely shocked, as were others who knew him even better than I. Turns out he and a friend had a suicide pact. IIRC, his friend survived but he did not. It was utterly tragic. It was long before the internet, and how they came up with this idea, or what caused them to even attempt this, I never found out. I assume that much of it came out in therapy with the boy who did survive, but I and others who weren't family or close were not privy to that info.
All in all, a bit of a puzzler. I do lean towards suicide. I don't believe the affair theory, I think it was just a dramatic story to compensate for a suicide.

First of all your videos are fantastic, well researched and sympathetically presented.
sometimes people who are suicidal can present a happy facade.
However, I do also wonder if Isabella lied at the inquest, perhaps the couple argued or the engagement was ended, and he ended his life near her home as a act of heartbroken revenge, perhaps she felt guilty, and didn't want to be blamed for causing his death.

Intriguing video - Thanks.. Ernest partly reminded me of this song by Sandy Denny
    Bruton Town
In Bruton town there lived a noble man,
He had two sons and a daughter fair,
By night and day they were contriving,
For to fill their sister’s heart with care.
One night one night our restless young girl,
One brother rose up from his bed,
He heard the servant court their sister,
Oh he heard they had a mind to wed.
Oh when he rose the very next morning,
    Went searching for the servant-man,
And when he found him this young man he murdered,
Oh left him lying in the briars around.
Oh she went to bed a-crying and lamenting,
And thinking of her own true love,
And as she slept she dream't that she saw him,
A-lying in the countryside all covered with gore and blood
    ....cont'd

I like to do a bit of research myself after watching these videos and I thought I was onto something when I noticed that there was a girl with the same surname as Ernest (Margaret E Whitehead) who died on the same day as Ernest (10th March 1907), was the same age as Ernest (21 years old) and lived in the same area that Ernest died (White Street, Burnley) which happens to be a stone's throw from Maden Fold Bridge, but there doesn't seem to be any connection between the two deaths. • @ajkleipass
    @ajkleipass Před měsícem +3

Euphoria before suicide is not uncommon - it comes from the relief that you are ready to bring an end to the pain you are in. 😢
Theory: His affair with the married woman was true. He had decided to end it in favor of marrying Isabella. The married woman, however, was not happy with this. She was demanding that things continue or else Isabella would be told - maybe there were letters or photos - evidence that could not be ignored. Trapped between the future he wanted and the past he didn't, he came to the conclusion that ending his life would be the only solution. He chose that bridge because he wanted the last thing he saw to be Isabella's house. Depending on the bridge style, he might have climbed over the railing and stood on a beam while tying his scarf to the lower railing. Remember, if it was a weird way to hang one's self, it would've been equally weird for murdering or disposing of a corpse too.
The fortune could be interpreted to fit this scenario - then again, all fortunes / horoscopes are generally vague enough to fit any and every situation.

We find this a lot in the older stories, no headstones present. It's a difficult one, especially in this story as 5 people are interred in the same plot, so with it being a family grave, we kind-of presumed a headstone would probably be there.
