    Very innovative way to square cut those dowels using that 2X4 scrap. Nice! I'm sure you are aware that, not only does jeweling look great; it has functionality as well. Particularly in firearms. It helps hold the lubrication in a specific area. I like the Scotchbrite way better, as well. Good show.

    YAAY on the Rikon! I suffer with sinusitis 24/7/365 and have a Honeywell HEPA and an old Lighting Air ozone generator in the bedroom. I run the HEPA every night and the ozone when things are rougher and the engine turned is BEAUTIFUL! And The Estwing can make a rasp in a pinch. Thanks, John CS! Better pack the Rikon up for the move!

    Those farrier rasps are so handy in the shop. I’ve seen guys make some very cool looking knives out of those rasps as well. They’re so meaty and course.
    I should probably invest in one of those air filtration units. I’m sure my lungs are filling up fast with dirt and dust and rust as well.
    Great jeweling demo. The scotch brite has always been my favorite. You could add some cutting compound and use the scotch brite as well on the harder tool steels. Might show up a wee bit better.

    I’ve been watching Engel’s Coach Shop for quite a while. It’s unfortunate that he doesn’t have an apprentice in the shop to learn the trade. I call him a genius, I wished I lived close to him so I could volunteer my time just to learn from him.

    In the shop years ago we used to put jeweling on all the tools and fixtures we made for oil retention to prevent surface rusting while stored on the shelf. I don't really know if it worked all that well, but it was quick to do and made the work look professional.
    I still do jeweling on tools I make in the home shop. That way five years later I know that it must have been made for something. Besides that you need to stamp your work with a description and date made so you'll have a clue as to what its for.
    Cheers from NC/USA

    That Rikon air filter is a nice unit, I especially like the timer feature. The downside to these is the pre-filter is an odd size so they gouge you for replacements. I’ve seen some guys make their own pre-filter using 1x2 wood frame, hardware cloth and bulk filter fabric. Cheers.

    In one of mrpete's videos (JEWELING Tips #469) he features his friend Palmer Moynihan showing another way to do the jeweling using sandblasting media and a pair of rulers, as well as mentioning doing it with a wire brush and other things. There's a company called Weiler selling some specialty banded wire and "nylox" abrasive brushes with that might work with that method. Loved it as usual I put “jeweling” on part of a hunting knife that went through a fire. It had pitting too deep to get all of it out. I free handed it so that it would not be in a pattern. It turned out really cool. Because of the crazy pattern your eyes could not see the pits. But now I have to try the straight pattern. Would a square or triangle make any difference? Love the vids keep up the good work. Oh, if you haven’t tried an ice skate file you have missed out. Soooooo wonderful on axes, knives, hatchets and removing stock

    • @ScoutCrafter
      @ScoutCrafter  Před 4 lety +2

      Teresa- One tricky part of jeweling is getting the right pattern, the best way is on a milling machine or any machine with a moving table, then you just move the table with a hand wheel in a perfect line... I had a record power air cleaner it was too powerful for my shop, being small it kept the air cool and clean to extent that I had to turn it off because it would get to cold in the winter.

    Another good video. Fun to see somethings I do validated. I have a variable speed wood lathe and want to try your wire wheel method on it. How are you attaching the wheel to the head stock. Your camera angle doesn’t quite reveal your attachment method. My lathe is a Robust with a 25” swing so plenty of vertical space but might need to extend the horizontal. Any tips would be great. Jeweling tips were great. Sand Flex blocks are outstanding.

    John, did you buy that air filter based on my questions about keeping your shop clean? I bought mine through grizzly. It looks and costs the same as yours. I bet the same company in China made both of ours. The problem I found is that the filters clogged very quickly. I've had mine about 6 weeks and I'm on my 2nd $30 filter.

      @JohnDaker_singer Před 4 lety

      ....I guess they get you coming and going. Just like the companies that sell you printers and ink.

    • @ScoutCrafter
      @ScoutCrafter  Před 4 lety

      John- I will find a filter supplier... Even if I have to make an adapter. A filter should only cost a few dollars, it's good to know that machine kept all that gunk out of your lungs!!!!!! Thanks John

      @JohnDaker_singer Před 4 lety

      @@ScoutCrafter I like your idea better than paying big money for a filter. I'll make some sort of adapter too.

      Clark LOL- You know I waited over a year for them to come and put electricity on my property upstate, I just wanted a box I could tap into while up there... after about 18 months they called me and said “We are ready to look at your site” I told them “No Thanks I bought a generator”. 😃👍
