"I Need U" is when I became ARMY, so I had a pretty looong journey down the BU rabbithole, watching it unfold over the years. Your journey is probably going to be shorter, since everything I've followed gradually over the years is all out there now. It's fun for me to follow you as you explore the BU with fresh eyes, it feels like I'm doing a little time travelling myself, and going back in time to re-visit an old friend with you. I'm not going to say much as I watch your BU videos, I'm interested to hear your interpretation of everything.

It's so hard to NOT remind you to think about everything you have learned thus far. :)
I always say this when new fans start their journey of "Bangtan Universe" because they get confused after a while and they don't understand why they don't understand. :)) So now I just pretty much copy/paste the same text. :) You were probably already told the order of the videos. But. The continuing storyline in the MVs is not exactly that, don't expect to watch everything like a continuous film. :) It's not like that. If you want a comparison, it's more like a huge puzzle with pieces all over the place. The basic story (let's say it's the frame of the puzzle) is the I Need You MV. Everything else, all the Notes (small booklets included with physical copies of CDs with short texts, like diary entries), all the other MVs, trailers, short films, etc are like puzzle pieces adding more and more details to the picture. Sometimes it's straightforward, you will understand immediately what's going on, but sometimes you will have a piece of information in your hand but you won't know where to put it until an other part of the picture is put together and all of a sudden you realize the piece you're holding will fit there. The best example is Taehyung killing that man in I Need You. When the MV came out we only saw him kill somebody, nothing else. Only when the CD with the Notes for that album and his solo song's trailer came out later we found out who it was and why he stabbed him. That's how it works with all the details and information. Sometimes you will only find out the meaning of a part four videos later. So don't worry if you can't put the story together because you still don't have all the pieces on the table. There will be albums with MVs etc, to take the story further.
To be totally honest, when you finished with the MVs in the storyline the best thing you can do is watch a storyline explanation video, like xCeleste's for example. 2 parts, really detailed and well put together. Just because it's nearly impossible for new fans to catch up with around 5-6 years worth of materials in this topic, you would need to read all the Notes, there are clues in 15 seconds-only concert tour or MV trailers you would never think of checking out, etc. It's just simply too much. 😁 Just an example about the importance of the different mediums you would need to go through: you remember Jungkook getting a beating in I Need You, right? Why? You will never know if you don't read the Notes that came with the CD. It says:

So it would make your life easier if you look up a video that explains all this stuff to you when you finished exploring on your own. 😀

I appreciate the info, but I wanted to be confused. I wanted to watch it all play out. One of my big things in this journey is #NoSpoilers because, to me, I want to see the story that I personally receive from the art. It might not be what the artist intended, but what viewers receive is also important to note. My desire here, through the entire thing, was to piece together as much as I could on my own. I enjoyed every last second of it. 💜

Hi Roscoe! This BU journey has been so fun!! I've been following BU since HYYH era, but I feel like it's been years since the last time I watch a pure fan theory/interpretation videos where they dive in blindly. A few years back BH hired a writer to organize and finish the story so people are sticking to the ofc story now, but I always love hearing new thoughts and think of the potential alternatives. With how it was built, BU kinda feels like it's ours and not the writers'? Kinda like what Yoongi always say: "if you think that's what it means, then that's what it means". Even after millions of theories I've read, you've had some fresh points I've never realize before! So fascinating!! Excited to see more of your BU journey! 💜

I know I’m really late to these BU videos, but I just have to laugh at myself watching you react and try to figure out the BU storyline. I’m literally screaming at my screen “ROSCOE REMEMBER JOONIE TAKING THE PHOTO AT THE GAS STATION!” and “ROSCOE, PAY ATTENTION TO THE BOYS WHO PAIR OFF IN CERTAIN SCENES!” 😂 I know you’ll get there on your own and I’m super surprised at how observant you are to certain things, so great job so far! I love reliving the newness of the BU through you!
Regardless of how close/far you are from the intended interpretation, I love that you point out tiny details that I haven't really paid attention to before!
Ok I found BTS 3 years ago and tbh thought the BU was too overwhelming and upsetting…so I learned the basic story and moved on.
Now that I’ve been around awhile and the guys are away 😢 it’s the perfect time to revisit this.
Having a blast going thru this with Roscoe and I’m looking forward to the rest of the series.😊

The image at the end of I Need You is the picture that Jin asks if they should go there. Also, keep that still shot of them in the truck looking at the ocean in your head. It will come up in another video...
Hyung means an older brother or male friend. So, being that V is the second youngest in the group he could be calling any of his older hyungs. However in the BU there is a particular connection between V and RM.

A prologue to a stage show is similar to playing pieces of the soundtrack to get the audience ready. I can see in this video prologue that these are bits and pieces of the video to come. It's like we have the puzzle pieces on the table but haven't started connecting them. Please make a note to find out if V is committing suicide. There's debate on that. BU is long, an album and a half or so. My literary point of view would be to start with plot and characters, then go back for detail.
Also, you should read Demien, by Hermann Hesse, c1919, which is what this is based on.
Really happy to go on this journey with you, Roscoe! Although I already have gone thru the B.U., I really appreciate your view and the lens you bring. Can't wait for more!
The pic is of V & his grandmother, who raised him. He was very close to her. She passed away when they were performing in the Philippines in 2016.
If I'm correct Umma is Mom in Korean but (eo-meo-ni) is Mommy in Korean, so Omini could be a shorter form, maybe? But, since we saw V's Mom picture and many of the members mom's are important to them or are missing from their lives in the story.
I'm not a Korean language speaker but after watching hundreds of K-dramas I know this:
-nim is a honorific suffix, with meaning sir or madam, added to the name/title of the person of the higher status or person we respect, ex. Hyung - nim
So Eomeo - nim is the most respectful way to address a Mother (your own or someone else's), mostly used as a title instead of someone's name.
Eomma is a more casual way to address your own mum. Hardly used towards others.

It really makes you want to think what it might be, and what the connections are as we - yes - dip our toes and whole arms and legs in.... as we, too, get swallowed up into their world of possible parallels. After listening to you, I do have some BU possibilities in my head as well. But they are pretty much in their infancy. Anyway, so intriguing. Also the BTS era HYYH [Chinese characters that say Hwa Yang Yeon Hwa translated meaning "The Most Beautiful (Happiest) Time In Life"] started with their song I Need U, when where BTS was dealing with all the trials & tribulations, angst, frustrations, hardships, choices, decisions, etc. during their adolescence until Wings era, (which has parallels to the novel 'Demian' by Hermann Hesse, which is most helpful to read if looking for explanations or answers) where BTS was coming out of adolescence and going into adulthood once again having to go through more struggles, choices, & decisions once again. Hi! (MY OPINION)It has been years since I watched the BU. I am in your journey to see what you think. 😊 I believe that the BU was created for a way so BTS (the fellas) could carefully write about mental, physical, emotional, sexual abuse, drug and alcohol addiction ... dealing with questions of who are we, do we matter, who loves us...does only blood make family? ARMY grew at a powerful rate because BTS understood the issues of real life. This collection of works proved to me how gifted and empathetic these 7 men are and the people that listen to them and work with them. I love the couch because it is insightful and enjoyable and it makes me think and laugh at the same time. I never really comment or chat. I just listen. Thank you Rosco and the Couch Crew. 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜
I think you're getting a little lost in the sauce with viewing everything metaphorically. This is an actual story and it's important to get the facts right, now that it's the beginning. Because later it becomes more metaphorical and with a lot of throwbacks. Also as someone who's kept up with the story, there are so many throw forwards even in these first few videos, it's disgusting. Makes me want to cry.

I don't want to give any hints or spoilers as to the narrative, so I'm being very careful with how I write this:
* You're not at all crazy to look for symbolism in everything, but remember the context is within S. Korean culture first. When images & iconography are adopted from outside of S. Korea, we can't assume that they're retained all of the same meanings that we may assign.
So, an example is the clothing. Remember that group shot mentioned in, "I Need You," & how you couldn't quite put your finger on a time period based on the clothing. Given that fashion trends vary so widely from place to place at any given time, maybe the clothing isn't a clue as to the time period but something else.
Outside of the strictly utilitarian, clothing often denotes subcultural group membership & even subcultures nested within subcultures, e.g. red vs. white boot laces. Once those signifiers are moved outside of their contextual bounds, their meaning is often broadened and/or interpreted through a different socio-political lens, especially since even our nostalgia is culture-dependent.
So I'm done sulking about missing the premiere and I'm going to start watching your part two now 😹 lol nah really I'm just getting round to it now...OR AM I? Dun dun duuuuun... 🤡 Okay no seriously starting starting...
