He would be a 80 million Euro player today...
in the 90s due to the foreign players restrictions, most teams could only have 1 or 2 foreign high class players, because of this european football was well balanced, at one time Sporting managed to have a team filled with Portuguese stars and Balakov, players like Figo, Paulo Sousa, just to mention some, this team was capable of rivaling with the best teams in europe.
Balakov was a superb player who despite having a great career, respected as legend in all the clubs he played, he could have achieved way more status with a bit of luck...
He was per example a player of the same level of brilliance and talent like >George Hagi per example, he had that kind of insane technique and criativity, also possessed a vicious left foot who was deadly in free kicks...
Balakov was one of those typical n. 10 playmakers that dont exist in football anymore...

I remember venting for Bulgaria in 1994, as Portugal was not qualified for the World cup just because of Balakov, my favourite Sporting all time player.

Him with Fredi Bobic and Giovanne Elber was something very special.... unfortunately Stuttgart never had a defense similar in class....Bobic was the classic striker....Elber was already world class at the time....and Balakov was the playmaker....his free kicks and long distance passes were incredible.

That guy was way better than his career, but his huge salary (over 6 million Deutsche Mark, an amount rivaling the biggest salaries in Europe at that time) and the fact that he saw Germany as his second home prevented him from leaving Stuttgart.
