  • If you're following the Folsom Forge update series, you'll know that I am doing many things with iron. One of my projects coming out soon is making Damascus steel and making a knife from that steel. That knife is going to need a handle and this video shows making the material for that handle.
    I got the idea from a video by John Heisz and here's the link to John Heisz' video on making micarta....

    "A" for effort. You might want to do some dry runs and learn what you're doing if you're going to offer up an instructional video. As opposed to doing something for the first time and say you're going to show us how.

    It is actually pronounced my-cart-a. A good idea would be to pre wash the material a few times. most new cloth is treated with a chemical that makes it a bit water resistant, probably to prevent mildew during storage. Washing it will break the treatment down and help the resin penetrate. Also try pre-stacking and compressing so you get an idea of the finished thickness of your blank. Always make your stack up a bit larger than what you want the finished size of scales to be to account for shifting. lastly stagger your clamps to avoid uneven compression try at least one in each corner and tighten them in a staggered pattern. no one side all at once.

    Why doesnt anyone line their molds with wax paper or some kind of lubricant to keep it from sticking to the micarta? It seems like so much more work to cut it out.

    • @WildmanTech
      @WildmanTech  Před 4 lety +1

      Cutting it is what gives the desired effect. Some people even leave bits of the wooden mold attached and apply a finish to them as well.

      @@WildmanTech yes I've seen that. It just seems easier the other way. And you still get the layered effect when sanding and shaping the handles. Although I cant say from experience, I've just watched several videos on it. I'll be attempting my own handle for a file knife i made refently.

    It's not micarta. Micarta is an industrial composite that you cant do in your garage . It's phenolic resin + fabric that is pressed and cured under tons of pression and high heat for several hours.
    Actual micarta is much more dense, hard, resilient to heat and more impervious to moisture.
    Try putting you "micarta " under direct sunlight for 10 minutes or under got very hot water and it'll become soft .. like really soft.
    What you made is mYcarta .. a way of saying that its layered fabric in resin. "Like" micarta.
    Ps: epoxy can and benefits from being post cured : exposed to heat for several hours to raise its hardness and heat resistance.

    dude..! PLEASE either look directly at the camera, or never at it..
    looking off to your display screen, (which is what I presume is just off to the right of the camera) and then to the camera, then off to the side, then back to the camera, is really off-putting as a viewer..
    watching this made me feel like I was looking at a guy with a lazy eye, you can never really tell what to look at..
    Regarding the micarta, I'd suggest a less aggressive wave pattern in the timber form (which will yield more usable micarta), screw the side panels to the wave block, add end panels, then spray the entire inside with a silicone mold release spray and allow that to dry.. and when doing the epoxy, soak the first, then every 3rd layer of material..
    considering the amount of squeeze out you had on this piece, you either need a lot more material layers, or a lot less epoxy.

    • @WildmanTech
      @WildmanTech  Před 6 lety

      No idea what you're talking about. The camera this was shot with does not have a display that can be seen from the front.

    Please, look at the camera. Do not follow the display unless it is in front of camera.
    Good and reasonable priced teleprompter cost around one hundred bucks.
    You could actually make one, and THEN USE IT!
    Your videos are just fine, but it really burns my brain to see you following monitor instead of camera. It is so disturbing, it really eats away popularity. Fix this, and you get ten fold followers.

    • @WildmanTech
      @WildmanTech  Před 7 lety

      I actually have a condition called strabismus. My right eye veers right and I only see the periphery through it. It's worse when I'm tired and apparently this day was pretty bad because you're the second person to mention it on this video. I am aware of it and do my best to compensate.

    • @ojamii1
      @ojamii1 Před 7 lety

      OK, sorry for that.
      We humans are social animals and pay attention unconsciously to body language, and your restless eyes makes wonder "what is he really thinking about" or "he has something else going on". That restlessness makes unaesiness, at least to me. It feels like you start to watch a video about making micarta, and end up following your eyes, totally forgetting about the rest. What i now remember about the video, six days later, is your eyes, but could not remember nothing else about what the video was about.
      You could also mention the reason at the beginning of video, maybe just short "forgive my restless eyes, but there is nothing i can do about it etc.". Then first timer with your videos like me could better anttend to
      on what you say and ignore the body language.
      Other solution is to leave yourself out from the video as much as possible, at least eyes. You could also cut such parts away where it is really distracting.
      I really like your videos and things you make, and would like to see more of this. I just let you know my opinion to help you make the content even better.

    • @WildmanTech
      @WildmanTech  Před 7 lety

      You know what really sucks? They have had the technology to fix this condition since the 1950s and my parents didn't have it done. The later in life you attempt it, the less likely the procedure is to succeed. They can adjust the muscles to correct it, but at this point there's a 75% chance that my brain will pull my eyeball back to where it is now.

      @brandonfedorick8106 Před 6 lety

      Why should he have to mention anything about his eye or cut himself out of every video he makes just to appease you? I didn't find it distracting at all while I watched this video. Maybe you should focus more on the subject matter at hand.
