Winter Landscape Photography Has Arrived

- The winter season is perfect for landscape photography and when the snow finally arrived last week, photography was all that I could think of and I simply couldn't wait to get out and grab the opportunity. In this session I have only a couple hours to make the most of the conditions but I manage to find four lovely winter scenes to shoot. The video is perfect for anyone who wants to gain inspiration to photograph woodland in winter, as I basically share my thought process for you to benefit from.
I have been a nature photographer now for over thirty years spending much of my time in the woodland landscape, observing the seasons and how nature integrates with them, which has served me well when it comes to my photography. Crafting great images can seem like a long and lonely road but CZcams has really made a difference when it comes to fast-tracking the learning process. Please review my other videos, which like this one are also very educational and I am told, extremely relaxing.

All fantastic images as always, Simon, but for me, the haunting, ethereal atmosphere captured in that last shot just did it for me.. Absolutely beautiful..
Thanks Andrew. That one was a very nice spot indeed. They do come along occasionally.
@@SimonBoothPhotography And you certainly did it the justice it deserved. 👍
Just fantastic buddy!! Them scenes in the woodlands are just magical! Lovely form and thought buddy
Cheers Tom. It went far too quickly. Back to mud again here!
Dear Simon, again a nice vlog. Compliments, and please go on that way. Beautiful pictures👍👍👍.
Thank you Eef
Love the snow covered tree one..the one before you "called it a day". Magnificent!
Thank you! Cheers!
Rhapsody and Blues Very Very nice
Absolutely fantastic video Simon and as always all photos were beautiful especially the one with the curved branches and the last one I would definitely give the two 5. Thank you for sharing your video
Thanks John. That's very generous.
The third shot is just stunning. and the video quality is great. Thanks as always Simon.
Thank you Ian. I've improved the sound too since this film was made.
Last image the favourite for me.
Just wonderful 🙂 nice to see you Simon.
Thanks for watching Sven
Wow wow wow ! Inspirational
Awe thanks Pamela.
Amazing shots. Great job, Simon.
A good illustration to the difference between looking around an really seeing. Beautiful !
Thank you! Cheers Leo
I can’t really say enough, you’re blessed with an exquisite Vision of our beautiful home 🌎
Oh that's very kind of you to say Dave. Thank you so much.
Snow always has something stillness in it. Also in these pictures.
It's such great weather to work in.
Than k you! Exquisite winter woodland images, loved them all.
Glad you enjoyed it Mark
living on the coast we don't get too much snow here, but being close to the Brecon Beacons mean I can get into the mountains, an this past few days has made for some lovely trips there. it was bitingly cold though!!
fantastic images again, but the one at 18:20 is the standout for me 🙂
I live pretty close to the coast too and my nearest mountains are the Lake District. It never lingers for long here sadly.
crackin' stuff Simon, get it while you can, right enough!!!, magic...
Absolutely Jamie
It was great to see you so excited by the scene and the weather! The enthusiasm was palpable and appreciated and was translated creatively with these photos. Beautiful, cheerful and quite a great set of images for this Christmas season!
It was quite a rush round in conditions we rarely get. I feel I did good in the time that I had and yes, it was bloomin exciting. Cheers Kieth
Another great set of images Simon, number three my favourite, thank you.
Thanks Maurice. It's a nice shot that one.
And a good time out was had, it's amazing how much better the shots look when framed up. Favourite for me was the third of the final four.
I'm very please with this image, thank you.
Great shots, particularly loved the third one - magical.
Thank you Gillian.
The images get better as the video progresses, wonderful work Simon. I haven't been able to get out with my camera as much due to circumstances, so great to see these videos.
Happy to help Tom. Thanks for watching.
Brilliant, as usual.
Love the images as usual . Great exmple of how to make the most of every opportunity. Ver well done.
Make hay while the sun shines as they say. Not that the saying particularly fits well here?
Great images Simon, first class... I do believe you are are getting EVEN better, all images really good but the last two... Wow...thank you
There's always room for improvement Steve. I believe getting out more often is a good place to start. One day a fortnight is just not enough.
Thank you Simon.. Excellent and there was certainly a Five there
Thanks very much indeed Jason.
The last one was my favorite. Thanks for the video
Thanks Larry.
That last one is 4. Minimum. Thanks for the video and the inspiration!
Thanks for the vote of confidence Jo
As always another superb set of images Simon.
Glad you like them Tony
I really like the atmosphere of image three.
Thanks Paul
Last two did it for me- wish I was there!
It was very short lived Robert.
Beautiful images, thanks!
Well Done, Simon
Superb. Each one better than the last as you got, your eye in, I feel. Great work.
Thanks Simon. I was lucky to drop on that last one. It really stood out.
Wow, Simon simply stunning images, not sure which one I prefer, thanks for sharing and for the inspiration, a very Merry Christmas to you and yours.
Thanks John. All the best this Christmas to you and your family.
Great video, winter conditions and photos. Cheers from Norway!
Thank you, we could really do with some more snow right now. I expect you have plenty in Norway.
Lovely images!
Beautiful images Simon
Another fab video Simon. Stunning images.
Thank you.
Beautiful images! 2 and 4 are my favorites!
Thanks so much Melani. I appreciate your comment and view.
A bit late watching 😊 All stunning images but number 3 for me could feel the coldness ❄️
Better late than never xx
Wonderful scenery. Thanks for sharing!
Glad you enjoyed it Darren
Beautiful shots Ssimon, loving Britain's winter shots so far from the you tubers. You are having a great winter so dar.
Sadly the snow in my area went the day after. Still, can't complain eh :-)
Last shot definitely a 5!
A few others also have said the same on that one. Thank you.
What beautiful scenery. As a South Australian, I'd be far too excited and I'm sure I'd be photographing everything in sight. Stunning images, Simon, well done. Thanks for taking us along.
Thanks Kerry. Yes it's sometime hard to dial the enthusiasm in and stay focused.
Stunning images, Simon. I am very envious as in my part of the U.K. we have not had even a flake of snow!!!
Thanks Valerie. It’s all gone now and I expect that’s all we will get. Snow is fairly unusual where I live and I was really lucky to be able to get out when it came.
Gorgeous images, you definitely made the most of the conditions. I love the soft ethereal feel of image no. 3.
Thanks David. Stay tuned for the next film when I return to look at the images again..
Beautiful images Simon. Great stuff!!!!
Cheers Andi
Simon you have motivated me into venturing out into the snow. I love all the images however my favourite is the third with the capture of the earth contours along with the wonderful trees etched in snow. Thank you.
Good luck in your search in the snow Laura. It's all gone here now.
Stunning images Simon and beautifully captured. Especially love the image you say looks like it's under water, haunting atmosphere to it. So happy for you that snow arrived at an opportune time. Safe travels and have a lovely Christmas to you and your wife. 📷☃️❄️
Thanks David. It was lovely to get some snow before Christmas. I hope it's not the last!
I love the last two images, the mood in the last looks fantastic.
Thanks Hugo
Season’s Greetings! Thanks for sharing!
Same to you Michael
Hey Simon,
Nice video and many thanks for the journey.
Greetings from the Bavarian Alps
the Dude
Cheers Dude
All good but the final image is special. Certainly a four and possibly even a five.
I think it was too easily won to be a five, but I will take that. Thanks David.
Lovely images as per usual Simon. Well done and thank you for sharing
Thanks for watching Glyn and thank you.
Great video, Simon! The last image is one of my fav images of yours.
Glad you enjoyed it Graham
Great work Simon, I don't think I have ever seen you so excited. Well done!
It's pretty rare Glen :-)
Thanks for sharing that Simon absolutely stunning pictures 👍
Thanks for saying so Colin
Hi Simon ! great video and beautiful photos !!!
Thank you.
Simone, As always beautiful work. I feel your images just got progressive better as the shoot went on. I love the simplicity of winter images. Keep up the great work…. You should consider coming over to Norway for some winter shooting! Love the work and as always, keep snapping…
I have been to Lofoten. There are three videos from there in my older videos. I loved the place and felt very at home there.
Oh wow Simon! What a fantastic afternoon of photographic playing. Loved seeing that twisting curling tree you’d captured before with all that snow this time. Interesting to see the comparison with the green warmer season. My pic though is that last one. Holy dooley the light dynamics and the shape. It’s definitely right up there.
Is Holy Dooley related to Holy Moley :-D. Look out for the next film Denise where I re-visit these images with no snow.
@@SimonBoothPhotography holy Dooley is related to holy moley. Hahahah. I'll look forward to the next film Simon - I continue to enjoy your wanderings and image capturing. And do look forward to seeing where you've been and what you've noticed.
Beautiful as always.
Thank you Jane
As always Simon, a very inspiring film with informative commentary. All great images but I particularly like the image with the snow bank. The accompanying music also makes your films a pleasure to watch. So relaxing. Something I look forward to each week.
I spend many a while choosing the music Colin so It's nice that it has been noted. Thank you.
Wonderful images Simon in that winter wonderland :-). All really nice images. The second to last image was my favorite, and personally, I would give it a 5 with that really stunning light and feel of that scene :-)
Many thanks Steffen. That image really worked out well.
As always, excellent video Simon. My overall favorite was shot 3.
I learn so much from your films, I just wish I could remember it all in the field 😁
All those years of practice has served me well. At leats you have good old CZcams now Andy.
Hi Simon. Wonderful stuff ! You've captured the scenes perfectly particularly, for me, in the first image with the contrasting colours of the beech leaves and ferns. Many thanks for sharing.
Cheers Tim. Keep an eye out for the next film. I show this scene and the others with no snow. It makes for interesting viewing.
I'm so glad you took advantage of the short time frame you had. I think all the images are wonderful but for me the third one is stunning.
Thanks Patricia. That third one will make a nice Christmas card.
Stunning images again Simon! Very ethereal and atmospheric. Not got a favourite as they are all beautiful images. Well done!
Thanks Ged. Glad you enjoyed them.
Some beautiful pictures. Merry Christmas 🎅🏼🧑🏻🎄🎄❄️⛄️
Thank you! You too! Have a great festive season.
I’d say some of your best work!
Thanks Wes. The conditions when they change always provide a boost in creativity.
Beautiful ethereal video with great photos. I like the snowy version of the swirly branches, the composition really draws you into the image. And your intimate tree photo is truly mesmerizing; I can’t get enough of it. Thank you for sharing!
Thanks as always Wim for your support. Happy Christmas to you.
The photos look amazing. All well composed.
Thanks Koshy
All shots grow progressively better for me and are beautiful and restful until the last shot. That last detail shot just grabs me and creates a sensation of being pulled in. Great video Simon.
Another viewer commented similar in terms of progression. Interesting!
You came away with some really nice images in the short time span you had. For me, it was surely worth going out. So glad for you that the snow hung about for a bit. Fine video, Simon.
I really enjoyed the time in the snow Jim. I just wish it would have stuck around.
Merry Christmas, Simon!!
Best wishes to you Al
The stand out image for me was the second last one ,just loved the softness it protrays with the subtle luminance.👍📷
At the start of your video I thought you were in a woodland close to me in Penicuik, Scotland 🙂
Certainly not Scotland Brian but I wish I were. I love that place!
@@SimonBoothPhotography cheers Simon, yeah very lucky where I am....if you have a chance to look at my Instagram or Vero you will see what I have close by 😊👍
Hi Simon. Very atmospheric and looked like you had a good amount of snow down there. Im hoping it all disappears before I travel down from Scotland to England for Xmas! I was like Bambi on ice trying not to slip and damage my ankle for the last two weeks! I love every single image you took and can't say that I have a favourite as every time I look at them I change my mind. Keep safe and have a lovely Xmas Simon.
Thanks Jill and safe travels. I think you got your wish, there's no snow here now. Happy Christmas to you.
Image number 1 would be one my wall on boxing day. Great to have dreams thanks Simon Ive really enjoy this video. I cannot get out and move around in the weather sadly, which I miss. So its wonderful to be taken out buy you. May thanks. Happy Christmas.
Glad you enjoyed it Mark. I like that image a lot too. Stay tuned for the next video when I show it with no snow.
Beautiful shots.
Many thanks!
Dear Simon, thank you once more for an inspiring video and fantastic images.
I really would like to also see the composition of the last picture during another season (like the second one). Both the second and fourth image would be on my personal list for a '4 season' project.
Greetings, and also wishing you joyful holidays already!
Not a bad idea Micheal. In the next video I revisit these scenes with no snow.
Oh come on Simon that beautiful shot has to be verging on a 5 mate!
Ooooh I dunno Neil. Is there such a thing?
👏👏👏✌️
Simon, you really do know how to compose a frame!
Cheers Greg. I've been at it for some time now!
sitting at a desk at work, watching this and the snow outside is sooo nice, i cant wait to get out now that the school semester is over and get some photos. wow that last photo, absolutely amazing. I wonder if you ever thought about live streaming your walks with your phone or something simular, it would be fun to see uncut raw footage of your trips into the woods.
Weren't you supposed to be working :-D
I hadn't really though of live streaming but I have since you mentioned it here. Something for the future perhaps, when I work out how to do it?
Thank you Simon. Liked the first 3 images; not sure about the fourth one.
It's interesting to hear that Derek. Thank you for watching.
Great shots Simon, Love the third and the last one, which you posted on Facebook I believe. I can see the under water aspect now as well. If you would put underwater sounds to the photo, it would'nt sound weired ;-) ....... No 3 is such a peaceful composition, really love it ! Thankx !! ....
Probably not Herbert. Thanks for watching.
Hello from the longitudinal center of Canada... Winnipeg, Manitoba, where we enjoy winter wonderlands for 5-6 months of the year, and we just had 4 days of snow... and I must admit I love winter and the beauty it brings, especially when fresh snow combines with trees that still hold a little foliage from the summer... at about the 2:10 point I LOVE the tree with several twisted branches in the distance between two near tree trunks, but it would mean moving a bit closer and more to the left for a narrower composition.... we have just had very similar conditions this week and the files scream for B/W at 10:30 I can feel the energy that the fresh snow has brought to you 😊 If you ever want to visit just let me know... I can show you the beauty of just snow on an open prairie, sculpted by strong winds into wonderful lines, shapes and textures... Thank you for sharing the joy of winter photography 🥰
That's a lovely offer Dave. I so often wish I had more free time to travel. I would love to see your part of the world. I can count on one hand the number of times we have had snow in the last 10 years.
@@SimonBoothPhotography anytime... so long as we are around 🙂
Some really lovely shots Simon, I know it's subjective but the image at 12:53 is a 5 for me.
Thanks John. Glad you liked it so much. You are right though, it is subjective. I think it was too easily won for me to call it a five.
Nice shots
Thanks ✌
👍
I think majority of photographers were so excited for the weather.I do have to say what a difference in the 2 photos from autumn to winter. The 3rd & 4th images are stunning!!! Definitely a 4.5 if not a 5 for me! so well balanced.
Cheers Sean. You must watch the next film where I re-visit these shots with no snow.
@@SimonBoothPhotography looking forward to it
That shot at 16:20 is great
很漂亮
谢谢
I just had those exact same conditions in my local area yesterday. It was like you and I were in the same woods, except that we are an ocean apart. Of course my photos don't look anywhere near as good as yours and it's now turning cold so the chances of redeeming myself are very slim. It doesn't matter though because it was such a beautiful walk.
It's as much about the experience Jeff as it is the photographs. I believe if you love nature enough, it will reward you.
@@SimonBoothPhotography I agree. Nature never fails to make it a positive experience.
Wow!
I have very pain with my back, but you make go out tomorrow in my "wood", before the snow is gone.
How did you get on Karsten?
@@SimonBoothPhotography
Fine, thank you.
That morning was wonderfull but no fog, so I make some panorama of snowy "Eifel" - montains ....., the next Day the snow was gone.
Merry christmas for your!
@@karstenbirk5302 that’s the way of the weather eh! Happy Christmas 🎅
The last couple of images were really interesting. So often snow and trees images are pretty high contrast and your choice of softer renditions are quite nice.
Thanks Jim. I think woodlands are complex and need to be dialed back a bit when it comes to processing.
It is often taught in photography that the act of scouting for images is a positive activity but rarely demonstrated in such a tangible form as the twisted tree composition. You predicted that the image would look better with frost or snow in the original episode and were absolutely spot on. Well done!!! This leads me to a question on your gear choice... I started using a geared head a few years ago and it has been an perfect fit for my type of photography. With your very precise and purposeful technique have you ever thought of using or tried a geared head?
I have always used a ball head Jim for as long as I can remember so i guess I have finessed the use of it. Having said that, I would love a Cube head.
The never lasted where i stay .. it snowed NYE by the end of NYD the snow had virtually melted away in the village . A Smidgeon of covering of the fields ..
Had more rain than snow since . you got a better coverage than here .
It's so often the same with my location. I travelled up into the higher ground for this film.
Regarding the two straight trees on the right... since Nature doesn't give a hoot, and will mix curves with straight, all willy-nilly, to begin with, is there a composition value that could include the two aspect, as kind of a contrast to each other?
I suppose in some instances there will be. Not for me on this occasion though.
Lovely Simon. Im off to Wisconsin later this month but unsure as to whether i will take a camera or not.... Love these images though! Quick question. How dod the Z do with the colour temp on the snow/.?... Regards, Ewan
Wisconsin eh, you really should take the camera and make something for us fans.
I didn’t notice any problems with the white balance at all. I wasn’t necessarily scrutinising but I think something would have triggered my unconscious thinking had there been.
@@SimonBoothPhotography - thanks buddy. The colour and light sampling of the Z is something else. Your whites are lovely in these, and asked the loaded question as to whether you had to change the temp etc!
