In 1967 Paul Newman along with a stela cast made the film "Cool Hand Luke" about a prison chain gang while in jail he was informed of the death of his Mother he withdrew to his bed and sang Plastic Jesus, I can recommend this film it was a massive hit at the time.
The radio personality Don Imus used a version of this on his program for years with his parodies of the “Reverend Billy Sol Hargus”, a southern preacher who begged listeners to send him cash, in exchange for salvation. Another couplet: I can drive a hundred miles an hour, as long as I got the almighty power, riding up there with my pair of fuzzy dice.
I like the version of this...I like the version that is played inside of the both of them sitting down played a little slower....still a good little song
I always thought Ernie Marrs wrote this song but learned upon Googling it just now that this is incorrect. I met Ernie once in the '60s at a meeting of the Atlanta Folk Music Society. Paul Newman did a version of this song in "Cool Hand Luke."
As a Christian, I think a plastic Jesus on the dashboard is great, just another reminder it’s by the grace of God we are alive to even drive the car. Where did you see these two? I have been enjoying Josh on CZcams for a while. Seeing him in person is on my bucket list. Love the range of music he covers. Thanks for recording and posting.
I consider myself a Christian (I'm guessing some other commenters would debate that...) and the God that I believe in is not so small and humorless that they couldn't get a chuckle out of something like this. Anyway, this is from the Crystal Ballroom in Somerville, MA. This duo was a real pleasure to see in person. I love watching people who clearly enjoy making music, especially when they are good at it :-) You are most welcome!
I too find appeals to primitive superstition offensive to human intelligence. But that does not stop me having an emotional reaction when I listen to Bach’s St Matthew Passion. Josh and Mary are talented and hard working musicians who produce very good very good music. In the same way I can enjoy Qawwali or Faure’s requiem, I appreciate the hours of dedicated practice these two talented musicians devote to producing these brilliant performances.
@@philkaelin9779 Do you know what album? Just looked thru all the track listings of all his albums listed on Wikipedia and couldn't find it. Also searched in Discogs, but no joy there either.
I remember it on Alice's Restaurant but I see it's no longer listed. I wonder if it was cut. His politics slid to the right in the 90s. I wonder if he thought it was disrespectful or something. In high school we sang that song thanks to Arlo. The rest is a mystery.
Thanks to a Friend I have the original Plastic Jesus statue in a cardboard mailing tube with paper inside containing Plastic Jesus Prayer upon which the Song is based and a call to worship at a Catholic church (in Alabama?) it’s been a long time since I opened it.
*Jesus Christ is the Messiah and He is about to return.* *Make sure that you sincerely ask him to forgive you of all of your sins if you haven't done so already. The faithful believers in Christ will be raptured to Heaven.* *The rebellious and lukewarm will be left on Earth and all hell will break loose during the Great Tribulation.* *Choose wisely, Don't get left behind...🙏👑🕊️✨*
Id say as a Catholic with an Italian background, a plastic Jesus on the dashboard is essential. Then a magnetic St Christopher. Magnetic you say. Yeah I’m pretty old. Dashboards had steel in them once upon a time. The Bygone are awesome.
um, ok, if you want to know the lyrics, here's one version. Can't promise it's 100% the same, but close for sure! www.musixmatch.com/lyrics/Tia-Blake/Plastic-Jesus

Great job. Josh should get more recognition in the guitar world.
この二人は良いですね-.
❤️❤️❤️❤️😭😭😭😭
Joshua and Allison! So great to hear you again
We always sang this in church after Mass at St. Victor's church.
Sister Peter Mary taught us this song in katechism class. She wrote additional verses for us to learn.
Sister Peter Paul and Mary?

"Broadcasting live....from the Gold Buckle of the Bible Belt."
"One more time for HIM !!"
Yes he should. As good as I have heard! He puts extra in everything he plays
I remember this song from the 1950's.
Great guitarists and singers! Keep it up! 🤗
I was there! This song is so funny! Great performance !
It sounds like there are more instruments playing! Amazing performance.
Прекрасно исполненная веселая песня. Барышня милая и очень хорошо играет на гитаре.
Haven't heard that in forever!!!
I don't miss it.
The first time I heard that song was in high school with a hippy/Grateful Dead band

Love that tune

👍Great movie. “What we’ve got here, is a failure, to communicate.”
I heard Paul worked hard, obstinately so, to get the song down.
@@dantallman5345 That quote is from Smokey and the Bandit I think.

No, that quote is from Cool Hand Luke.
i remember this song in cool hand luke

You should on the OPRY!!😁
This was the IMUS in the Morning theme song.
Wonderful. Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Spiffy!

I've still got one around here somewhere...
I'm so glad Presidential Counsel John Dean is able to make an honest living.
Brilliant!!!!❤❤❤
Merci, y'all.
That's Mere Haggard on guitar??!!
Arlo Guthrie I thought?
Hmm... Not according to my "extensive" research (i.e. wikipedia entry). Googling Arlo Guthrie and Plastic Jesus isn't yielding me anything promising.
I came up with the same thing as you. It's on an early Arlo record where I first heard it. Great little tune. Thanks for sharing!

This song dates from before Arlo was even born.

Well, ya can't get much more blasphemous than that.
Seriously? I don't think you're trying very hard then.
Identify the blasphemy. This song is satirising a fictional idolater who does not apply Jesus' teachings.
This song was offensive in 1957 when I first heard it, and it's still offensive.
that`s why we like it
But yet, here you are, listening. SMH.🤣
Glad you enjoyed it.
What's offensive to you in this song? To me it seems to be attacking folks who don't behave Christian but who indulge in a bit of idle idolatry.
