- This week marks the 30th anniversary of the beginning of the Oka crisis. What started with the proposed expansion of a golf course west of Montreal, turned into a 78-day stand-off that has left a permanent mark on Canada. As Dan Spector reports, the issues that sparked crisis have still not been resolved decades later.

Why does anyone NEED military style assault weapons? Maybe so they can fight for their rights and land and not be completely crushed by the state.
Amen
Don't let canadians forget this historical event. This should be taught in all Canadian schools. All new Canadians should know about this.
There are so many historical events. We can't teach them all. I don't think a blockade for a gold course is a big enough event that teaches a lot of history.
@@lukebowlby3848 When was the last historical event that happened where Canada felt they needed to deploy thousands of troops against Indigenous people defending their lands? If noone knows historical events like this then they're going to be ignorant to the fact that Canadians are just settlers and guests on Turtle Island, and if they step out of line First Nations are willing to stand up for themselves.
@@niigananishinabek990 They don't to because then people might start doing it more, but even this is changing thanks to things like CHAZ.
ZenoTheMeano How?
@@lukebowlby3848 that's because you're uneducated on the facts. It's a prime example of what happens when you question oppression. If someone desecrated your family's Graves you would not be happy.
It's a prime example of what happens when you question oppression. If someone desecrated your family's Graves you would not be happy. And now they're trying to strip all protection by any means.
When your race determines whether you own land or not......
good luck taking my land
@@robdavidson2569 No one owns land, freedom is a myth.
You’re not very educated
What's that supposed to mean, you got a problem with natives
They were going to build a golf course over sacred gravesites that is disrespectful
Another reminder that Cold war tactics are still going on strong.
The peaceful ones who were more heavily armed than the Army, and were the only ones who killed.
There was alot more to this than just a golf course.
They are supposed to be a sovereign nation and had their land invaded. Any sovereign nation should be able to defend itself. Nobody on the indigenous side should have been arrested
@@RiseOfAnarchism I suggest you look into it more.
@@mafmaf6417 I suggest you look into the barrel of a loaded gun. Sovereign nations should not be invaded. Not that hard to understand
They say the poor young cop God bless his soul might've got hit by friendly fire
@@PeterNgola Lol!!! Even better!!!!
Bravo for health and safety measures.
i am so proud to be first nations,my heart is always with my people.
proud?? LOL
What failure they are building a golf course over there sacred grave sites how is that fair for the First Nations people
@@cameronpickard7456you won’t win, dirtbag
I support you for oka people
Yes, you probably do. With your taxes. You can also give them your money voluntarily. Knock yourself out!!!!!
@@pag282 That's ok. I have plenty to give out.
They're losers. Should've been dealt with accordingly.
0:11 I find it tragic that people would respond in a manner that of a child would have. Mulroney was no racist (didn't call anyone terrorists or criminals) it would be the opposite of his character to do so or it would look really weird for someone who was a very strong advocate for abolishing apartheid in South Africa.
Wow. Wet'suwet'en still stand strong.
What the colonizers, the government, and let's not forget the church, have done to the Indigenous People of Canada is simply disgusting, horrific, and shameful. The issue involving the Ancestral Land in Oka should have been resolved a long time ago.
“ we were the peaceful ones ” says the side that killed someone during this.
So? He was no angel
They were not the ones who started the fight
Colonisers don't deserve peace :^)
@@melo3814Doesn't matter who started it. When you kill someone it escalates things. Something the news seems groggy about. It's almost like they're rewriting history.
@@melo3814 Yeah they were
Wonder what'll happen if an American uses this against a Canadian in an argument about how Canada better than America.
Hey, Sockboy refuses? Maybe Jugmeat can put in a good word. They're LUVVERS, afterall. Or at least Jugmeat licks Sockboy's shoes.
Indigenous rights are firearms rights

Oka coming to stolen land called BC and we will never forget we will always remember oka Eastside Warriors
And today we fight for native independence, in solidarity with the ELZN!
Follow the anarchist teachings of our ancestors
You are obviously not indigenous
Obey the state the state does no wrong comrades
A guy told me once that he was there as part of the military response. He said the cop was shot from another officers gun.
The same guy who said that to me, told me that you are a liar and not to be trusted
@@LiveDieTrolling For sure dont trust that, but the guy seemed reputable. Thats all I can reaĺly say about it.
Great that Jagmeet was there.
but its comical that Leah gazen is a better public speaker than he will ever be lmao I don't care for either one of them
A dot Indian speaking to a bunch of feather Indians for votes.
I always feel embarrassed to be white because of what our ancestors did to the native and first nation people.
grow a pair
I feel great
I'm sure your ancestors weren't part of it, at least you have compassion. Only a sick psychopath would be proud of wrongs that their ancestors took part in.
Mister jagmeet thinking he knows what native power means to indigenous people
"We are the peaceful ones," the Mohawk woman said. Not how I remember it. I do remember Mohawk people, who after being promised that no Canadian soldier would go beyond the barricade, would stage three men on one side of the razor wire and three men on the other end of the razor wire. Then run over, grab one us and drag us onto their side and beat us. Ah yes! The proud, noble, brave "people of the pine.!"
Cope some more settler
@@bongo351 Ummm What do you mean by "cope"? As for "settler," I'm in no way saying that colonization was right. It should have never happened. Do you think soldiers like us were the cause of it? We showed nothing but respect for the Mohawks. We had ROEs and The majority of the Mohawks at Oka were respectful to us. Then there was "Lasagna" and the cowards. All of whom were from America. They had no respect for the Canadian Mohawks, let alone us. Before you say "Mohawks are not American or Canadian," tell that to the them. Because all they did was act like typical Yanks.
@@stucorbett You must've misheard me, COPE.
@@bongo351 yeah....no. Still doesn't make sense. Even in capital letters.
@@stucorbettcope mald seethe. At the end of the day off yourself colonizer. You and your ilk were wrong to be there that day no matter what. How's it feel to have fought for someone's right to build a golf course. Truly the most noble of causes.

Yo
Ce qui me fait chier c'est que les indiens seront toujours là pour se soutenir et les québécois non pourquoi car la plus part son des pas de couille sinon le gouvernement ferais pas le poids
indians gotta learn
you clearly gotta learn if you’re still using “indians” uneducated 😂
Native Separatism > Quebec ""Separtism""
Just a fact.
You're avatar is cringe, man.
I’ll take either if it means a weaker Canada
