Berserk: Why Black Swordsman and Lost Children are important

- The Black Swordsman Arc and the Lost Children chapter are skipped in both anime adapations of Berserk. After hearing comments saying that these stories are not important to the overall story of Berserk I thought that I would throw my own opinion on why these are key for Guts character building.
Apologies for the shoddy editing in this. It's the first video I have ever made, does not make it any better but hopefully there will be improvements over time.
czcams.com/video/GrSkbVxf7ac/video.html New video is up! Thank's for all your positive feedback which gave me the drive to make this. I have started a new series exploring Gut's and Casca's relationship throughout all the arcs, give the first part a watch!
Keep it up its intresting
At first I interpreted guts crying after he kills the count as his sympathy for Theresia, and that’s probably part of it, but he had JUST found out that the band of the hawk are all suffering in hell
Oh shit...
Holy crap...
Damn!
That's even worse
All of them deserved better, even Corkus.
The ending of The Lost Children arc almost made me cry, cuz we got to see the development of Guts, and watching him turn more... human. Also the last scene was beautiful
So it's completely bullshit when people say it's not important
Jon Martin Langåker Yea it always confused me when people claimed that its not important
Not to mention, the fact that he's captured immediately after the arc ends is due to his injuries from The Lost Children arc. Not what the anime came up with.
"almost"
I love the panels with him enshrouding Jill in his black cloak from the evil spirits.
The Jill Arc was one of my favorites
*EVERY* single page, arc, frame, in Berserk is important.
Except wyald
@@ayoubzoufri2003 Even Wyld
ye with wyald, summoning the godhand had more meaning, in 1997 anime it was confusing what its purpose is
not the copious rpe scenes
There is almost no filler , that's what i love
One of the most important things about the Black Sowrdsman arc is the parallel Miura draws between that little old man that wanted to take revenge from the apostle that killed his wife, and Guts who's trying to take revenge from Griffith, who killed his friends. Both decided to go on a mission beyond their own caliber, and both are fueled by revenge. It was obvious that Guts was wondering to himself whether he's waging a war he can't win, or whether he'll end dyeing just like the old man did. I remember in one of the panels Guts was talking to himself and so he said something like "I won't die like you," and it felt like as if he was trying convince himself in his own words, rather than the old man. Maybe Muira is telling us Guts would die at the end.
Guardians of Desire and Lost Children serve as a setup for the beast of darkness, and Guts journey in the Conviction arc. Without the context of these arcs, the beast of darkness kind of comes out of nowhere
I can answer this in just two words:
*CHARACTER*
*DEVELOPMENT*
Shut up gonzo.
@@BLIGHTROT666
Quiet Rizzo
Griffith tossed Casca a sword, and told her to fight for her life. Griffith earned Casca's devotion.
Guts tossed Theresia a small knife , told her to *take* her life. Guts earns Theresia's hate and revenge.
It's a shame how both great men are influential to others, but for completely opposite reasons.
I don't really get people who suggest skipping the arcs. The later development makes no sense without the earlier context.
No arc in Berserk is worth skipping
The funny part is that if you skip the lost children arc you won’t understand anything about the conviction arc lmao, why was guts so injured? Why was guts caught by the holy iron chain knights? what’s up with farneze? Why does she know about the dead and why can she see them? You’ll have so many questions
Rosine actually appears in the 90s anime too; when Rickert gets left behind and he sees the Count.
Also your interpretation of why Guts is crying hit hard in the chest
Don't you mean....
It hit right in the *_guts??_*
....I'll see myself out.
@@srslydoatm9251 That pun was more painful to read than the Grunbeld novel.
Just kidding, that book hurt more than reading Twilight for a mandatory English assignment.
@@hernehaugen6878 sorry you had to read that
@@srslydoatm9251 My English teacher had free reign of her curriculum in middle school. Fun fun, Twilight for twelve year olds!
Yes Agreed
I think both of those arcs are important because, as you said, humanity is a major focus in the overall story. I actually got a friend interested in Berserk because I told her there are demons in the story that are unquestionably evil, but you also feel for them because, for one thing, a lot of the Apostles aren't as vile as some of the humans we meet in this story, and secondly the Apostles are born from tragedy. Many of them, of course, weren't great people before and some of them aren't the least bit sympathetic, but other like Rosine are just...sad.
The Lost Children arc left me devastated because of Rosine's story. She was a child who had been scared and abused and she clung to an old story that lead to tragedy. It's fitting that the story itself was tragic.
Filler?! God ! People don't understand Berserk
I know right! Nothing is filler in Berserk.
As if they need to bloat out the manga.
It's taking so long as it is, so that we can have a flawless story.
j mula best arc
j mula I think some people/the author have said that arc has clues to Gut’s and Casca’s kid, and how he will be the key to defeat Griffith.
Crazy people don't respect the Black Swordsman Arc. Finishing that arc the first time, I was so bought into Guts as a hero and wanted so badly to know what could have happened to him to turn him into this monstrous, demon-hunting, traumatized man.
The count is a well written villan with a full backstory overall very good arc
Honestly they can skip the black swordsman arc if they really wanted to, but skipping lost children is stupid, sure it’s really dark, but at the same time has one of the most brutal yet uplifting quote from guts near the end of the story. It’s the best scene because it’s about empowering yourself to overcome your obstacles
Guts didn't say it, but I think he realized he could do nothing to help Jill even if he wanted to. He could kill her father... but where would that leave Jill? Fatherless in a Medieval village, so basically a barbaric welfare state, poor and looked down upon. The only thing Jill could do is bare with the abuse and try with all of her limited power to change her life for the better and that... THAT is the part of this chapter that hits me the hardest.
These arcs show the cruel process of Guts becoming more demon and human at the same time. But yeah, let's skip that and bang some pots and pans together instead.
Honestly I thought i was the only one that felt that leaving these two parts in berserk was a huge disservice to the series. Like why leave out the pain and tragedy that Guts had to endure for those two years of revenge? I know we missed out on two apostle fights, but they show how much Guts struggled and got stronger through sheer will power. How he was able to hold his own against Zodd despite the odds still be against him. How he constantly gambles his life and somehow keeps surviving. Like if I could animate this series, I would so animate those two parts because I waited years and never saw it adapted.
It definitely needs to be adapted and You really feel his pain. Shows revenge is not a straight path or without Innocents being hurt.
Wow. So Guts infected Theresia with his own hate and revenge. Griffith tossed Casca a sword for self-help, and Guts tossed Theresia a knife for "self-help." And each man gets a crazy groupie.
I REALLY want to see Theresia reuniting and fighting with Guts and interacting with his party, especially Farnese, Isidro and Rickert!
@@PedroLucas-mg5je Idk about that. She has not been present in the story for a long time and has no real significance into it. Shoehorning her at this point in will just feel out of place.
I wish they’d make a fourth movie that covers black swordsman and lost children those are my two favorite arcs outside of the golden age
The lost children arc is legit my favorite part of the series, to the point where if it was THE ONLY arc I'd still say it was a great series.
Not that I mind the other arcs, I'm loving the new JoJo arc on elf island.
Ishmael
Whats a Jojo arc on elf island.
AFKAwesome Fucking crazy
Ishmael ehh my dude, wrong manga xD
I mean, it's really crazy right now
nah bro come ooon, i see why this arc was kinda needed.. but it is noooooooot the best arc
The final panel of Black Swordsman was when I realised that Berserk would really be something special.
I honestely forget I did this. I saw it in my recommended and was shocked about the amount of views it received. Thanks for the feedback! Has motivated me to do more Berserk related content in the future, what would you like to see?
Spired do some videos on certain characters, judeau, casca, Rikert, and of course Guts and Griffith.
I would like to see some berserk analysis of character change. so maby of the sife charicters feel so stupidly diffrent than they once were. so many people talk about guts and how he has changed but people dont focus much on anyone else and how berserk has kept the side charicters intresting.
Spired Seeing some more in depth analysis of the philosophy present in Berserk would be nice to watch as well. This was a pretty good video though, keep it up!
Spired A video on how Guts develops with his group after the eclipse. There's still no one who talks about Farnese or Serpico's development, even though both change quite alot.

Sorry for the weird audio flubs and editing. I'm still getting a hold of all this but please enjoy the video!.
ya done good , i enjoyed thoroughly . thank you.
It's not a big deal, your videos are great! Your analysis is spot on and you really know what you're talking about.
This is great and echoes a lot of my thoughts on both arcs!
One important thing that Lost Children also does is actually introduce the Beast of Darkness and why it appears in the first place. The fight against Rosine was the first time Guts held back in a long time and the Beast appears to taunt him for it, saying how it manifested basically because of the path he had chosen of hate and revenge. It's appearance in the 2016 anime/in the cave doesn't carry as much weight without that first scene.
Man the lost children always bring me to tears.
More so for the fact that guts has grown so much.
I can kind of understand them skipping the lost children just because it's a bit... much for the people who aren't familiar with Berserk. It has child murder, "adult attack," dead babies, etc.
Ben Glaser tbh has some of the most memorable moments in the series. One of my favorite parts is when Guts cuts down a bunch of the fairy kids, then when the adults find their corpses and accuse him off murdering them he's just like "yep pretty much what happened fight me about it"
If they can't handle Lost Children they might as well drop the series. Or real life, really: it's not like the real world is any better than that.
Ben Glaser so?
Thing is though, the children were already dead when they were turned into Pseudo-Apostle
s.
They can make an ova. I don't think Japan would freak out
“All you’ll find, whats there, is a battlefield.” That part actually made me tear up
I really love this arc too. I liked how for a moment, a demon/apostle, Rosine is rightfully terrified of him. Guts just look outright inhuman and scary in that panel. 😱
Like how demons fear the Doom Slayer kind of badass! 😎
The best moments for me in Beserk are the Black Swordsmen and Lost Children arc. They are the reasons why I liked Guts to begin with, as well as got into the world of Berserk. the presentation of Black Swordsmen and the development of Lost Children are fantastic.
Every single panel from the manga is important...
Looking back, there's a parallel betwren Guts and Griffith. Whereas Griffith tossed Casca a sword, Guts tossed Theresia a knife. Both men are inspirational for the wrong reasons.
Especially Rape horse
@@raiseanothermanskidsforlov4920 rape horse is the thing that makes farneze understand how cruel the world can be for the first time and that she shouldn't though give up onto it but fight it, a thing that though she will learn afterwards, so strangely even rape horse has an actual meaning.
Schnoz
@@pablogonzalez2009 that actually about how abstract and bizzare of the astral world , also to make the reader off guard
Another theory about Therrissa telling him that is maybe gives Guts a flashback when Caska was telling him that. "It's because of you" finding Griffith after the Fight with Zod, a flashback of how Caska was before the eclipse?
Alex Suarez
I thought it was meant to resemble Griffith giving Casca the sword- Gutts gave Thereissa the knife- cause as both said “it’s your life- do as you wish”
Yes, This was my first Impression
This two Arcs are amazing and i want to see in animation!! or a movie =(
+Gabriel Julián Valencia It's the only thing that's gonna pull the animated series back from the dead. The lost children Arc as a movie special,Uncensored full with all the existential shit we all want.
People who say these archs don't matter simply don't understand the depth of the story.
I love, love, love your videos, this one especially. The way you can properly put to words why arcs in Berserk are important to you really makes me happy.
You have my respect.
Thank you all for the wonderful response on this video. I'm in the process of uploading a new Berserk analysis which should be up later today, it's part of a big Berserk analysis project I've been wanting to do for a while!
I would love if Theresia returns in like a future time skip or something.
I wish the same for Jill if she's still alive and I think they'll reappear in the next couple of chapters that Kouji Mori and Studio Gaga are making, for Jill, she can join Guts' group and for Theresia, she could be the new leader of the Holy Iron Chain Knights planning to take down both Guts and Femto!
There was NO way in the 21st century that they could animate the Lost Children arch without people absolutely losing their shit unless it was a Serbian indy film.
DON'T
Ok lemme just stop you right there...
Not even Serbian indy scene can help you now...
Just put it on Netflix and let the guys who did castlemania do it
Great news, Netflix would approve!
It's not nearly as bad as that new series with the 11 y/os twerking lmfao
Great vid. I've rarely seen good content like this about manga. Keep up, man.
Glad you also see the importance of the two arc! Maybe we will see them animated one day.
nintendoluigi It's better then nothing
@pip bernadotte
not sure if bait or not
Yes i agree everything you said was true because in order for people to understand Guts as a character and the Berserk story they need to have the full experience!!!
Great analysis man.
Berserk really is beautiful
I wonder if Berserk could flourish as a live action series. I would love to see that actually.
It would not
Zain Hartono The special effects budget would be way too high secondarily they cannot show some of the shit in berserk live action
Not every story can/needs a live action adaptation. Lord of the rings books, for example, are a work of art on their own (the movies are a plus, except the hobbit ones).
I don't understand this modern obssession with live action/photorealistic movies.
the 1997 anime is only one episode of black swordsman arc but I remembered it being several from when I first watched and then reading the manga blending together haha
At least a Lost Children movie, it NEEDS to happen
Your channel has grown by nearly fifty subs since I’ve subscribed! Hope you upload more soon!

Lost children arc is my favorite
nice watch and well done !
The Lost Children Arc was basically for the readers - now we know the whole story behind Guts's trauma, rage, and darkness, but does it still excuse the terrible, (self-)destructive path he's been following since the Eclipse?
every anime adaptation of berserk leaves out ALOT of vitol plot details and very cool interesting moments from the manga. buy the manga and read it , its worth the read and youll pick up alot the animes leave out~~
Berserk is the best story ever ive read the manga at least 4 times beginning til end lol
You can read into the future ? mane I want to be able to do that too
No ending in sight yet, though...
Berserk is definitely one of the best manga and story I’ve ever read.
4 times?! How much time did that take you?
@@edwardgaines6561 I can read through the entire series in 3 days, it's not unreasonable, I've read through it 3 times already, it never gets old.
Nice analysis! You should do more
These are my favorite arcs because of the world and character building.
I love the black swordman arc ending. It basically ends with Guts filling the daughter of the count with hate so she will live, knowing what kind of a hard life this will be for her. At the same time, he knows by doing this he is is no different than Griffith. This to me is a great point to think about. We know Griffith, at the eclipse, has the power to destroy Guts and Casca... yet he doesn’t. What if Griffith saw becoming an apostle as the only way of reaching his dream, yet still he loved Casca and Guts to much to kill them.... how could he make sure they stay alive? Fill the most powerful one (Guts) with enough hate to fight his way out of the eclipse. How could he do this?..... well, we all know what he did. Do you see the parallel to the black swordsman arc ending?
Ipoco yeah but guts didnt rape anyone
No.
Griffith didnt let them live, they survived thanks to skull knight, and then he simply stopped caring (cos his dream was pretty much coming true even without them dying)
There are some parallels between the two arcs, but not what you said.
yo yo you on something
Haha wow, now that's a fascinating angle 😃👉
BTW Gut and Caska was needed at the Tower of Conviction in order for the Mock Eclipse to take place (plus the demon child Femto used as a vessel which would obviously cling to its parents in such a significant predicament, which I guess would go into that calculation), not that that necessarily would disprove your theory, but this's probably why he let them go if he indeed had a particular purpose for it.
I like it but they kinda hint femto and Griffith are separate personas
This video is absolutely amazing and underrated as fuck I can’t wait to see your other videos man great job
Black swordsman arc is my favorite personally, very dark and full of action just how I like it, this arc and lost children is the most badass version of guts too
I don't see any way for Jill to have to survive this far (*MANGA SPOILERS*) After the intersection, the world was thrown into chaos - village, city, even kingdoms are falling down, the only "safe" place is Falcania. It'd be a miracle If she made it there, but I don't think she did otherwise, she would have been shown like Luca and the girls. Guts should've brought her with him, give her a chance to survive at least
and then what? Letting evil spirits possess her? The man can barely take care of himself, let alone having to fend for a 11-year-old girl who has no experience in fighting.
Lost children is my favorite arc
The fight with the bug lady is my favorite so far(I'm only on volume 44) because of the Guts' just wouldn't go down. It was so bad ass to read for the first time
Volume 44? Dude, there's only 39 volumes thus far. Volume 40 is getting released this October.

Great video, happy to become your 7th subscriber haha. Look forwards to what’s to come. You played Dark Souls, Bloodborne etc?
I actually completely forgot about this! I saw it on my recommend on my other channel and seeing the good feedback makes me wanna do more. I've actually never played Souls, surprisingly enough. I do want to play them one day though.
Spired you should play them the games are amazing, Dark Souls Remastered is coming out May 28th which would be perfect time to get into the series. Bloodborne is also my favourite game of all time and they’re all heavily inspired by Berserk.
Brilliant video bro can you do a video about skull knight god hand and god the idea of evil?
In Berserk there is no arc that is no important.
I love those arcs, they are so badass.
Just subscribed good analysis
Every page of Berserk is important and necessary, let alone every arc.
Lost children arc is a must see/read its amazing
Is it just me who read berserk and was like "damn I wanna be guts" but then thought about it and was like " nah nevermind"
I pray for a full faithful adaptation of this manga.....🙏🏾❤
looking back does anyone think the female apostle that killed Corkis is the same one that Guts killed in the first few pages?
Is the same
This was a great video, well written but I would recommend you turn down the background music a little bit in the future cause sometimes its hard to hear what you're saying
Grrat video i like your interpretations. I just started reading berserk and i could imagine skipping any of it,, it all seems pretty necessary to get the full picture, this story is so dense..is all that music in the video ost? What is that last song you used? Its driving me crazy
Lost Children did feel like a bit of a filler when I read it in the manga, but because of that, I started comparing Berserk to the episodic nature of Samurai Jack. I mean specifically like Samurai Jack, where even though every episode was self-contained and episodic, every episode was important in some way.
Obviously, after Lost Children I stopped making that comparison, but the arc is still a good example of how not every arc in a story needs to catapult the plot onward with righteous fury. The plot feels more organic when it takes a break from specifically pursuing the main objective of the story. Some of the most praised stories I've ever heard do this and more stories need to as well.
The two best arcs of berserk imo
This is VERY true.
Fantastic video, what else can i say?
The best thing Berserk16/17 gave us was that new susumu hirasawa music.
When I re-read berserk. I would say all chapters are good. There never been bad berserk chapters
The Black Swordsman arc and Lost Children arc are two of the best in the entire manga so far. In fact, other than the Golden Age arc these are the best in my opinion. I will *never* understand why people think they aren't relevant or good.
Yo that scan at 4:26 is pretty doodoo
The lost children is one of my fav in manga
I hope when Berserk is finished, I hope we get a good studio to do this whole series justice...

@@dropdown64 bruh...
9:30 what is that song in background?
He takes children with him now...
YES YES YES! you get it you get Berserk, i love does two arcs they flesh out Guts after the eclipse they are IMPORTANT arks
The 2016 anime should have started with these arcs. If they used a less time and budget consuming animation style they might have been able to smoothly do the arcs in a 25 episode season. But the 1997 would have still worked well on its own without either of the arcs.
This are 2 of the most crusial chapters to understand guts
The black swordsman is an introduction they show us guts as the black swordman and how rothless he can be but allso show us his human sight on remorse, sadness and doubt
The lost children is guts lowest point in guts ark he is so desided to kill rosine, and he goes to incredible lenghts to doe so, and eaven when we know she is evil guts is not killing her to save the childrens ore the village he is killing her out of pure hate. Its hard to know who is the lesser evil if her ore guts, he used a boy as bate, for angry demons and he allmost let the girl burn as bate to kill rosine. At this point he is a monster no better than the apostols he hunts
Eaven though he still hesitate to kill rosine 3 times we may never know if he would have finished her with the girl if wasnt for the knights.
We allso see the born of the beast of darkness and that guts would have died if it wasnt for puck he realise he cant do this alone any more and recognize puck as a companion the first one since the eclipse.... a grate arc from the gratest dark fantasy manga of all time
Song at 14:00 ?
I wish they got the same team as the original anime or at least the golden age films for the new anime
I wouldn't skip any of the two but I'd recommend reading Black Swordsman directly after the Golden Age Arc, following up with the Lost Children Arc. Lost Children is not only necessary for Guts' descent into darkness character development, but it is also great in itself with a really gray moral compass that makes you reconsider everything.
Lost children was so impactful to me, I was legitimately scared at Guts, lol when he goes out of those flames, looking like a fucking demon? Damn, the bug girl was scared as well, lol Guts was the real monster, not her. I absolutely love that moment. And as always, topnotch art, you can "feel" the sword swinging even if it is static draws. This particular fight against the bug girl and then later, the fight against zod in the graveyard... these moments features this "feeling" more than ever. The art has weight, it moves.... Berserk is crazy good
Another thing I want to mention is the behelit that Guts gets in Black Swordsman that he's been carrying around for the past 3 arcs, that is almost for sure going to be an important plot point later, these arcs are essential, I don't think there is a single arc that can be skipped, they're all important.
Just love the Lost Children Arc
What version of Blood and Guts is playing it sounds awesome
please someone tell me the music name 01:22
Because is my favorite ark
Let's also not forget between both these arcs Guts noticably traumatizes children pretty consistently. Taking kids hostage, encouraging suicide, killing child apostles, etc. Remember he killed Adonis in the golden era as an accident, on orders from Griffith. He's constantly reminded of the trauma of killing a child.
I'm your 667th subscriber. Sorry.
Rip juice wrld
I must say that after watching the anime and then reading the black swordsman arc I realized that even as a member of the god hand, griffith is very scared of guts, Guts was the first man to deny him, to defeat him and to abandon him, I saw that fear in the black swordsman arc when Guts tried to attack femto, then femto told him that he could not even get close enough to him because the brand of sacrifice would cause too much pain, but even with the brand gushin out blood, Guts was still able to swing the dragon slayer at Femto, something he thought was not posssible and you could see the surprise in Femto's face.
It even looked like he remembered that time when Guts defeated him when he was still human.
Griffith had to sacrifice everything, even his own humanity, to gain power, but Guts, being only a human, is able to defeat beings beyond the realm of comprehension and I bet that fact is always in Femto's mind and he can't find an explanation to Guts' strength.
