I get right down to the basics in this beginner terrarium tutorial so even if you’ve never made a terrarium you’ll be able to follow along. From terrarium plants to terrarium light to terrarium substrate, I go over all the basics here. I also go over care instructions like watering a terrarium and what terrarium light bulb to choose. Have you ever made a terrarium before?
My terrarium overwatered, so can I just dry the soil and change the plant to fix it?
Hi Ben. Recently I build my first terrarium. It still looks ok, but i noticed that leaves that hit the glass get mushy and eventually wither off.
I added some springtails to the terrarium in the hope that they eat those dead leaves. Is there a way to fix the issue?
Sadly, I am not really familiair with plant names yet, I just picked some small tropical plants that looked good.
No. I really want one and have it succeed.
No. I've been wanting to do it for years. I finally decide to do it today :)
Yes I made it when I was in 3rd which was 4 years ago and it died because I failed to take good care.
I'm looking at making a terrarium as a decorative piece in a fireplace.
Thank you Heath Ledger 👍🏻
I was thinking the same thing! What a resemblance!
😂
This guy have the perfect voice to make terrariums...
I think people of all voices (and no voices for that matter) could be great at making terrariums 😁
I am teaching a class tomorrow on terrarium building for beginners. I watched your videos all week, obtained the recommended materials, took notes, made a great visual aid and talking points all from what I learned from you! I sincerely appreciate the time and effort you have put in to making this art form open source. You are a kind and generous man.
I will definitely be giving out your links at the class.
Came here as a total beginner looking for info, and this did not disappoint! One of the best informational vids I've ever seen, period
I'm so glad I found your channel! I decided to put my fern (that has been looking so sad lately) in a terrarium and am in need of some guidance! Time to binge your videos to figure out what's best for my little fern!
I watched your vid last night and made my first 2 terrariums this morning. With your tips,
they look great! Thank you for posting this video for beginners like me. I made one side higher than the other for both and it looks so dynamic and adds that wonderful scale, depth and dimension that you mentioned. Thank you.
update
I’ll be honest I clicked on your video because I thought that you were Heath Ledger reincarnated but now I want to make a terrarium, so thank you!
my method: 1. Use whatever I have. 2. steal plants and soil and rocks and maybe even a duck from the park. 3. Look up youtube videos why my terrarium isn't doing well. 4. Repeat
uhm………
This made me laugh
I’m also using the steal plants method
🤪😂🤪😂
I FOUND YOUR CHANNEL TODAY BEC MY STUDENT INTRODUCED TERRARIUM TO ME!! I AM SO HAPPY! #PHILIPPINES
This a great informative video, thank you! I recently made a mini desk terrarium with air plants and crystals, so far so good the plant is thriving. 😇♥
I also noticed this terrarium doesn’t contain any insects or other forms of life. What should I do if I want one with living things inside? (Besides plants, obviously)
Rolly polly
You are going to have to balance the needs of all the living things inside. I would start with the living thing you want in your terrarium and plan around it’s needs instead of adding it in to an environment that may not be ideal for it. Isopods might be a good way to start, they are more hardy in general (and very cute!) Just remember they are relying on you! Reddit has a few subreddits dedicated to terrariums that could help guide you once you narrow down your options. Good luck!

Can you put down some links. I finally now know how to deal with this and i'd like to join a community where i can ask (cus i am a beginner 😅😆)
@@Nancy-yg1kf I I'm aslo an begginer l saw on wikiHow how do it but you can keep worms rollypolly millepede and snails and slugs
There's life, millions of microscopic lifeforms.
Thank you! I do mine outside and surprisingly it works great it has moss on its own and flowers
This is perfect.
Exactly what I needed.
It’s weird I stumbled across your channel and I love it now
The most delightful part of my Thursday🌿
Thanks Christian, really appreciate you!
I could listen to you all day long
Same, so relaxing
I've bought this glass terrarium cylindrical dome and I've been anxious about where I can get these materials and how to take care of it, let alone assemble it.
This video puts my mind at east quite a bit about the latter. All that's left is for me to get the proper materials and such.
Looking to make a moss terrarium to grow mushrooms in, just found this channel, thanks for sharing this info
Thanks for the video. It was superbly presented and packed with important details. I am about to undertake my first attempt at building a terrarium, and your program gave me a great confidence boost! And the British accent adds character, which is always a plus.
I like the accent, as well.
Thanks a lot ! Very interesting !
I’ve seen some of your reels and videos. I have epilepsy and have real big anger issues and was thinking one of these could help with my stress and anger. Going to try and make one!
Liked and subscribed. Very well done video. Thanks!
Made my first terrarium today…Thankyou for your tips.
How did it work out so far?
thx man you helped me with my school work :)
Informative. Thank you sir. 👌
Thanks for the tips!
Very helpful! Thank you
Your videos are awesome!!
Thanks for this video. I'm considering a terrarium in my upstairs loft because an aquarium simply isn't practical (too many stairs and no plumbing up there!)
Great Video Thank You,
Could you (or these most pleasant viewers) please recommend plants native to the British isles that could potentially thrive in a terrarium? For the project I have in mind, the smaller the better. Consider it a micro terrarium.
Hi thank you so much for your nice video, could I know what kind of the soil you used in this terranium? Akadama?
Awesome. I need to do this
Amazing content! Regards from Brazil
Thanks Rafael!
What if the plant grow taller than the lid? Should we cut the top? Do you have video about how to mix terrariums soil? Thank you
This is Kool, I want to try making 1,also this would be different for me, coming from my background
I watched your beginner terrarium video twice and I believe I have most elements down. My question is with adding nutrients when needed. Since watering can be infrequent, can very diluted fertilizer be added at the soil level when the terrarium does get watered? Thanks. 😊
for how long do you keep your smaller terrarium lid open? any general rule?
can you make a open terrarium? if so what are some important care instructions.
I’ve seen screening addled between the gravel and soil. What is your opinion on that?
Awesome begging guide!! Thank you 😊
Hi! I've a question, can i make a terrarium as a marsh replica? do you have some advices about it?
Thank a lot.
Great video
I watched several of your great videos (very interesting and informative) and set up my own terrarium in January 2023. My plants are still looking healthy and I took your advice and added some springtails. However, there no longer seems to be any sign of them. Is this normal or have they died. Something else that is puzzling me is that soil seems to be working it’s way up the glass at the back of the terrarium where the moss is growing. Any ideas why this happens?
I've seen a lot of people use sphagnum moss for terrariums. Whats the difference between using soil vs. sphagnum moss? Also would a flood light be too high of light on a terrarium?
Awesome hobby 👍
Super beginner here... My father in law recently passed and I have inherited a few old reptile tanks. Does it have to have a lid or can it have an open top? I'm wanting to make the bottom of the tank for fish and the top for plants
Hello this is something that I am interest in learning. Where can I get the materials, soil, rocks, plants?
Awesome dude! Good to see one without moss as that can be the moss expensive part sometimes!!!
Agreed! You can make a perfectly food terrarium without moss
@@WorcesterTerrariums r/wooosh
Where can i purchase the plants? I’m a beginner and really wanted to try it. 😅 but i dont know where to get most of the stuff
Hi , does the container have to e glass or would plastic be alright ?
It’s fine to do without putting a mesh in between before the soil?
I'm a beginner. I want to use my pretty punch bowl . It's clear glass see thru with out a lid? Do I really need one? And can I use tree bark and planting soil miracle grow? This is what I have now
How do you propagate rhe plants you used? Im always afraid I'll take a small piece of my existing plant and it will die.
Great instructions. Where do you find those tops ?
Thank you. How thick is the soil base?
Does a terrarium have to be completely sealed? Most of the ones in looking at have an opening which allows for watering.
Did you moisten the roots before placing?
i have a 30 gallon tank will that work the same?
great camerawork bro its v adequet
Ben ur videos inspired me so much ! BUTTTTTTTT im have a small problem , im using most of my moss outside but I sterelize it and wash it from dirt . I build a terarrium and overwatered it and after 2 weeks all moss died so i builded new and didnt overwatered so moss still died after 5 days . I plan to build a new one that gona be perfect and i want permanently close it . Tell me what i do wrong and what i need to fix that moss will ramain green? Maybe one of problem is that i put the terrarium in a direct sunlight?
whats the name of the bowl you are usinganmd where can iI find it?
What should I do if I live in an area that is already humid?
Can one use river rocks as the bottom?
Have you ever tried making different types of fertile soil for some other plant or is this all you do?
Do not put activated charcoal befor the potting soil?
Thank you.
Hiya I've made a terrarium for my wild woodlouse? It's amazing x
what size is that bowl may i ask ?
Is there an issue if there´s no lid on the terrarium?
Can I leave the jar outside on the balcony at night or
Do all terrariums need to be covered except succulents?
Thank you
Iv noticed a lot of terrarium builders use a mesh next the soil then a layer of carbon do you ever use this method and if not do you think your method is best im not knocking anyone I like to know allthoughts as I have been collecting numerous bottles to make terrariums but as yet I have not made one so I am a complete novice in all but collecting some stunning glass
I'm wondering if I can just crush up the charcoal in my fireplace ..it's just pure charcoal from firewood..regards from new Zealand.
Can I make a terrarium without a lid or must it have a lid always?
I noticed that you don’t really use activated charcoal, but I’ve seen videos saying it’s a necessity. Do you really need it to have a successful terrarium? Or does the substrate already contain it?
Where did your display shelving?
Awesome video - what is the music used?
Andrea can i buy the Moss and the Plants?
Aren't you supposed to use some mesh between the soil and gravel?
Are you selling terrariu5products like the moss and plants??? thank you. I'm just a beginner
Can I grow a terrarium by positioning the jar close/directly to sunlight instead of using artificial light? Or does it need light 24/7?
you look like white drake
@@mctrapster lmao
If you do, the glass will act like a lens and burn your plants... and also increase the temperature inside the jar, "cooking" the plants. I guess maybe indirect sunlight would be better, if you do not have artificial lights that are appropriate.
What size container is that?
You should do ASMR videos! Your voice is soothing! Thank you for the terrarium tips!

Do you think using something like a cork lid or slightly porous lid would keep in enough moisture but still allow for some (albeit minimal) exchange of air for those of us that may forget to air it as much as we should? Or would that cause other issues? I feel like that would be my fatal mistake- suffocating the poor things 😅
Did you figure this out? Have the same question 🙋♀️
@@kelsieconway7022 not yet! I’ve watched a few different videos and haven’t heard anything either way. Might be worth the experiment 🤷🏻♀️
I have a cork on my own terrarium and it is thriving, to be honest I think it looks nicer than an acrylic lid. But you should look into what the plant you want to put into the terrariums needs are. Hope this helps
Adding springtails, Isopods, etc should help!
Does it work with rainwater?
Is it good to use white sand instead of small rocks plz help me anyone I just trying my first terrarium
Thank you, Brother,,,,I am Just begginer,,I know gardening well but not terrium,,,💕
Ciao..adoro guardare i tuoi video 😍 purtroppo però a volte non riesco a capire tutte le parole 🙁 quando parli della luce non ho capito bene..quanta luce devo dare al terrario?..grazie mille della risposta
Very lovely, but I found this way to advanced for me.
Are you making these lids?
Im planning on adding bugs to my terrarium to take the o2 and release co2 which the plants want
Hello can i ask a question can i use loam soil as a substrate? I don't have knowledge about this things so im asking a question, And also what kind of lid can i use exept cork?
You'd prolly want to mix additional organic stuff in with the loam-based soil, for more moisture retention.
Absolutely brilliant video. You present very well and as an absolute novice, these videos are invaluable. I have a large vivarium, freeing up a smaller one, which I would like to use as a terrarium. Purchased some items online and will see how it goes. My only issue is the ‘tank’ is 60cm wide, 30 deep and 15 high. Two things, is this to big? If not could you recommend plants and where to buy please (normal garden centre?). Many thanks!
Hey, it's definitely not too big.

You should also add terrarium progress in the video.
How do you keep the bugs in the container. We've been watching your videos today and were wondering how the millipedes and stuff stay in?
They really don’t climb glass and the lid keeps them inside
Great video! Also Ty for the links but what i really need to know is where to buy containers like that. Theyre not easy to find...for me at least.
go to your local thrift store!! my goodwill has so many containers and jars
Hello, how do you stop the plants from growing too large? Do you have to move them to a larger setup with time?
don’t put in plants that grow large. put in smaller plants
Trim if they become too big for your liking, but don't purposefully put a large plant in there
