  • Making a terrarium can be a daunting task so I’ve made this terrarium guide to simplify the process. I get right down to the basics in this beginner terrarium tutorial so even if you’ve never made a terrarium you’ll be able to follow along. From terrarium plants to terrarium light to terrarium substrate, I go over all the basics here. I also go over care instructions like watering a terrarium and what terrarium light bulb to choose. I hope you enjoy the video!

Hi Ben. Recently I build my first terrarium. It still looks ok, but i noticed that leaves that hit the glass get mushy and eventually wither off.
I added some springtails to the terrarium in the hope that they eat those dead leaves. Is there a way to fix the issue?
Sadly, I am not really familiair with plant names yet, I just picked some small tropical plants that looked good.

You are going to have to balance the needs of all the living things inside. I would start with the living thing you want in your terrarium and plan around it’s needs instead of adding it in to an environment that may not be ideal for it. Isopods might be a good way to start, they are more hardy in general (and very cute!) Just remember they are relying on you! Reddit has a few subreddits dedicated to terrariums that could help guide you once you narrow down your options. Good luck!

My plants are still looking healthy and I took your advice and added some springtails. However, there no longer seems to be any sign of them. Is this normal or have they died. Something else that is puzzling me is that soil seems to be working it’s way up the glass at the back of the terrarium where the moss is growing. Any ideas why this happens?

Do you think using something like a cork lid or slightly porous lid would keep in enough moisture but still allow for some (albeit minimal) exchange of air for those of us that may forget to air it as much as we should? You'd prolly want to mix additional organic stuff in with the loam-based soil, for more moisture retention.

Absolutely brilliant video. You present very well and as an absolute novice, these videos are invaluable. I have a large vivarium, freeing up a smaller one, which I would like to use as a terrarium. Purchased some items online and will see how it goes. My only issue is the ‘tank’ is 60cm wide, 30 deep and 15 high. Two things, is this to big? If not could you recommend plants and where to buy please (normal garden centre?). Many thanks!

You should also add terrarium progress in the video.

How do you keep the bugs in the container. We've been watching your videos today and were wondering how the millipedes and stuff stay in?

They really don’t climb glass and the lid keeps them inside

Great video! Also Ty for the links but what i really need to know is where to buy containers like that. Theyre not easy to find...for me at least.

Hello, how do you stop the plants from growing too large? Do you have to move them to a larger setup with time?

Trim if they become too big for your liking, but don't purposefully put a large plant in there
