    To your discovery on the silicone / RTV. Most people think that RTV is what does the sealing when sealing 2 surfaces, when in fact most of the sealing is done by metal to metal contact. Which is one reason why checking for warpage of housings and irons is so important. A slow drying RTV is more desirable when assembling a complicated engine so that there is time for the sealant to squeeze out as much as possible during assembly. For this reason I actually use the hylomar on the legs of the engine if assembly time will take longer than normal.

    • @RobDahm
      @RobDahm  Před rokem +54

It is oil and gas impervious and never completely dries, always staying tacky. It will actually reseal after a fast gear change when there isn’t time to clean the surfaces. I don't think it's necessary to do a lab check. The yellow residue might be the sulphur or tungsten that broke off the compund. WS2 is a dark colour, so leaving a yellow residue might indicate it broke down into tungsten oxide or sulphur oxides. The oil in that case, in a lab check, would be more acidic than usual. Please correct me, if my thinking is off, or anything.

      @@sirboiledpotato1314 I dont know about all that, but a lab check can let you, if you know what to look for and the material make up of certain parts, allow you to see if things are breaking in properly, or wearing excessively before catastrophic failures happen. rob, hope you see this:
    helicoil taps (and thread gages) are always labeled by the size of the threaded insert they tap for. helicoil taps will usually say “STI” right after the thread dimensions so you can differentiate them from a regular tap of the same labeled size. in your case, the helicoil tap should read “M12x1.25 STI,” meaning it taps for an M12x1.25 insert.

    Hi Rob. I'm Ray. I'm an engineer. The purpose of the oil groove in the bearing allows the oil to come through the supply hole, flow all the way around the journal and have the same oil pressure all the way around the journal to push from the middle outwards between the bearing and journal. It achieves the most even flow around the bearing as possible. A race motor typically has larger clearance on the bearings. This makes sure that when the crank (or eccentric shaft) flexes and bends more under the high horsepower and rpm, the journal surface doesn't touch the bearing material (as you know there should always be sufficient oil film in between). This larger clearance means that more oil flowrate will pass over the bearing and therefore the groove needs to be deeper to accomodate the extra flowrate and keep the pressure even all the way around the bearing.

    You need a tap follower. Same concept you were doing with the drill bit. You have a spring loaded chamfered pin that you load into a chuck then preload the spring over the back of the tap with your mill spindle in the center of your hole and spring pressure follows for a little while (can repeat preloading as you're progressing) and you have a near perfectly straight and perpendicular thread.

    Something that works for me sealing bolts and shafts. I rebuild race and truck gearboxs and we simply used red loctite that was to oil or pressure. Any soft setting stuff was no good but loctite, never leak plus the added bonus. Also red loctite 518 for all sealant surfaces, amazing stuff, you will never use grey silicone again. It only sets with no air so heaps of time building is allowed.

    Rob, I have one more suggestion. Get a tap wrench, and look for a spring loaded tap guide. It spring loads in the hole you used with the drill and will keep the tap straight for longer.

    Great video Rob. Love the attention to detail and the added R&D touches. Think the sealant on the e-shaft end and spline will probably come off with the amount of rotational inertia it will endure. Quick check on the oil filter after spinning it up will tell for sure. Can’t wait to hear it roar

    I remember watching you rebuild this engine for the first time; wanting so badly to build my own. Finally I got my own fc, re-built the engine myself and got it running again. Watching this video made me so happy, I wanna pull the engine again just to make sure it's healthy and happy too. The hoodie is sick, good job.

    Thank you Rob for explaining how twin vs. single 4-rotor manifold completely changes the sound of the motor. Always wondered why these things could sound so different! Once i heard your analogy of the "double 13b" it made complete sense!

  • @adampinczesgarageandfabric9930

    have you thought about trying anaerobic sealer? I was against it at first and didn't think it would work well but then I tried it on a NV3550 transmission that I had to take apart multiple times to figure out what someone else did wrong to it. So when I took it apart I was impressed with how well it actually worked. The anaerobic sealer is specifically for sealing machined surfaces so it squeezes out all the excess and fills only the imperfections and only cures once it is compressed leaving the squeezed out material non cured forever. That's why I didn't expect it to work well because the goo on the outside never really dries but when I pulled the transmission apart it was fully cured on all the machined surfaces and left almost no material where the surfaces had fit together perfectly and the best part is you can take your sweet ole time assembling.

    Rob please get yourself a proper tap wrench and a sprung centre for when you’re hand tapping on the VMC. It will help align everything so much better and also result in a better sized thread.

    Not sure if anybody else has mentioned it yet, but when tapping you can use a tap guide and handle to keep the tap vertically aligned. It’s essentially what you did with the drill bit, but a little more accurate and easier to control

    Rob if you you closer at the tap in the kit it will have the "STI" in stead of UNC or UNF. So its a "standard thread insert" tap for a 12x1.25 thread. All taps for thread inserts should have it so just keep them separate from your regular taps so there isn't any oopsies

    yo rob something just dawned on me while watching the apex seal installation. apparently its crucial to install all three simultaneously you could either mill or 3D print a tool to make installation a breeze. and 3D printing tech is so good at this point theres a ton of materials to print. depending on specific needs. just an idea thought id pass along. keep up the good work and ill keep watching. later

    I like the new flywheel, the oil pass throughs will help oil the clutch much better!

  • @christopherlenahan3906

    In short: With the greater clearance the oil flow out of the bearings will be higher. With a shallow oil groove the oil pressure on the side that is 180 from the E-Shaft oil port may drop due to decreased flow from restriction(and whirl). So the oil groove is deepened to allow the oil flow/pressure to remain constant in 360 degrees. If your oil pump isn't upgraded for high flow(I can't remember, but assume it is) you will see a drop in oil pressure in this build. Even with an upgraded pump you may see a drop in oil pressure on this iteration of the engine.

  • @richardwilliams9181
    @richardwilliams9181 Před rokem

    The deeper groove in the race bearing is probably for more volume of oil on the bearing. To have more oil available on the bearing for proper lubrication of the bearing to journal surface

    A tip I've learned to line things up in the mill, use a gauge pin that fits tightly into the hole, but put it in the collet and line up the table till the pin just drops in the hole. They also have spring-loaded plungers that can help guide the back of the tap to provide even pressure as you tap (and keep things fairly aligned).
