  • INTRODUCTION
In this video, I will show you the step-by-step procedure for designing a basic concrete mix using the Absolute Volume Method by ACI 318 (metric).
    DESCRIPTION
Concrete mix design is the process of determining the proportions of various ingredients that need to be combined to produce concrete with desired properties such as strength, durability, workability, and economy. A well-designed concrete mix ensures that the concrete will perform satisfactorily in its intended application.
Here's a general overview of the steps involved in concrete mix design:
Determine the Requirements: Understand the specifications and requirements for the concrete, such as strength, durability, exposure conditions, and any special considerations.
Select the cement: Choose the type of cement based on the requirements and conditions of the project. Common types include Portland cement, blended cements, and specialty cements.
Select the aggregates: Choose the type, size, and grading of aggregates based on factors like strength, workability, economy, and availability. Aggregates typically include coarse aggregates (such as gravel or crushed stone) and fine aggregates (such as sand).
Determine the Water-Cement Ratio: The water-cement ratio is critical for achieving the desired strength and durability of concrete. It's usually determined based on factors such as the desired strength, exposure conditions, and properties of the materials used.
Calculate Water Content: Determine the amount of water required for the desired workability and water-cement ratio. This is often calculated using empirical formulas or based on experience.
Adjustments for Aggregate Moisture: Account for the moisture content of aggregates in the mix design calculations. This ensures that the correct amount of water is added to achieve the desired water-cement ratio.
Select Admixtures (if needed): Admixtures may be added to the concrete mix to modify properties such as setting time, workability, strength, or durability. Common admixtures include water reducers, accelerators, retarders, air-entraining agents, and plasticizers.
Trial Mixes and Testing: Prepare trial mixes of concrete with different proportions of ingredients based on the initial mix design. Test the properties of these trial mixes, such as slump, compressive strength, and durability, to evaluate their performance.
Finalize Mix Proportions: Based on the results of trial mixes and testing, adjust the mix proportions as necessary to meet the desired specifications and performance criteria.
Documentation: Document the final mix design, including the proportions of ingredients, water-cement ratio, aggregate properties, admixtures used, and any other relevant information.
It's important to note that concrete mix design is both a science and an art, and it often involves iterative processes to fine-tune the mix proportions and achieve the desired properties. Additionally, local materials, construction practices, and environmental conditions may influence the mix design process. Therefore, it's essential to work closely with experienced concrete engineers and technicians to develop an optimal mix design for each specific project.

Best design mix I have seen so far. Thanks for this video.
Please can normal concrete mix using the absolute volume method be done using BS Code? If yes, please can you solve a sample? Thanks I appreciate.

BS Code, such as BS 5328 Part 2, has its own method, different chart, and parameters that primarily focus on by weight. I will make a video on that.
      Thank you for watching.
