I do all of these - but the one extra thing I do that I consider most important is to use a written checklist I laminated and follow each time I go out. It has 3 columns: BEFORE LEAVING HOME, BEFORE ENTERING THE RAMP, and AFTER RECOVERY FROM RAMP. Items include: visually confirm PFD’s for every passenger are aboard, test horn, test navigation lights, install plug, remove transom saver, check fuel, etc. Happy to share with you if you’d like to see it.
I had a checklist at one time but I keep changing up my gear and equipment!
Wayne, Another great video service for the boating community! Thank you.
Thanks!
Great content Wayne! Thank you for caring and sharing your experiences ❤️🙏🏻
I appreciate that!
Great video Wayne the Boat Guy, A lot people don't think about safety until something happens. Also back ups , great job going over these things.
Thanks 👍
Thank you for this video Wayne
Very welcome!
I agree people should be prepared as you have described I have been caught in a change of weather with limited gas then against the wind 35mph and a 3foot chop I was lucky.. You see all the time people trolling solo and walking around the boat! They even sell a fanny pack pfd
good video Wayne! I thought I was fairly prepared, but you mentioned tools for prop removal which I do not have in the kit yet. I will now, thx!
Thank you for this-good advice! Safety needs to be addressed more often. Your videos are great and I hope the Merc stays running for you!
great video Wayne. Great tips. i might have to look into one of the self inflating PFDs, it looks way more comfortable. good reminders.
They are!
1:59 as a fisherman. My little boat don't need a pile of stuff, but I looked up the next size up commercial boat, an try to have that amount of gear if possible
Best video you have done, I just ordered two of those inflatable vests. I wear my standard PFD while underway and wish my wife would wear hers! She doesn’t unless I insist. We are senior boaters now and mostly on inland waters but things can go sideways on the water quickly, I know I’ve been there!!👍
Thanks! Yeah these inflatables are really a game changer - especially when it's very hot and humid.
When I'm in a small boat i always carry a set of oars. Used to carry a spare prop as well. My father once put the outboard in reverse to kick the grass off. Well the prop went with the grass and my Dad had to push us back to the dock 4mi. Away with one oar.
Great video.
All good advice. I do all of these. For me, the weather, wind and waves are a big deal. I have a pretty big boat but if I have to fight 4+ footers on the way home, that changes everything. Always Be Prepared... I was an Eagle scout.
I keep multiple props and the tools to change it when I'm in my jon boat with a mud motor. I've had to do a prop change on the water twice. One of them I was alone, miles up river.
I haven’t had to swap a prop… yet!
All good tips.
Glad you think so!
Take a Coast Guard safe boating class. It covers all this and much more.
Its also important to know your boats capabilities and your skills in piloting. Too many boaters get themselves in serious trouble by overestimating one or both..
great point!
great stuff…I’m just trying to get my wife to sign off on a boat to get the opportunity to fail🤣
Ik this is off topic but you said in a video why aluminum boats are die ing and you said tracker stoped making Jon boats I did some research and I saw that they still kinda do there called white river Jon boats they still sell them just not under tracker or ranger anymore
I'll check that out! Some of the companies may have also resumed production but I'm still not seeing much online.
I to was researching the possibility of using a electric motor. But talking to people that live on the water say Sea tow doesn't have batteries to lend you just gas...
But they can still tow you!
Just a thought for a video….What’s in your boat box
Not a boater but a motorcyclist. Sure, safety gear looks like a clown. But what else looks like a clown? Dead or heavily injured by the road side, falling without safety gear. We call them Squids.
Always ride safe, on the asphalt or on the water!
Agree! Motorcyclists have to always be EXTRA aware of the cars and trucks who don't see them.
