- USC recruiting received some negative news when 5-star Isaiah Gibson pulled his commitment and opened his recruitment back up. It's a bad look and I explain why during the show's first segment.
The Trojans' optics took another hit on the same day when it was announced that USC and Ole Miss would not play their games that were scheduled to be played in 2025 & 2026. No reason was given, however, I'll tell you why USC is making a mistake and killing college football.
Former Trojans head coach Pete Carroll was in town for Elite 11 and I have an update, including his interaction with Trojan prospect Jahkeem Stewart who got to experience what it's like Pete starts talking about his time as USC's head coach.

USC has some of the most fickle fans. Look, very team has players decommit during the recruiting season. When USC gets a commitment very one is sky high and when a player decommits the sky is falling. There is the potential for every recruit to change their mind about their commitment, that's why I don't get to excited until they sign their National Letter of Intent.

Did anyone think SC was actually gonna get any of these guys?? Verbal commitments mean nothing! It's about signing your LOI. And all these official and unofficial visits. It's stupid! I'm here, no I'm there, no wait, I changed my mind again. When they sign, then I'll be happy. It doesn't matter who our recruiters or coaching staff are or Crawfish Boils we have, Georgia, Ohio St and Oregon get all these players and we don't. It's as simple as that. More winning and better NIL. Just hope the coaches can coach them up as good as they can, and see what happens..

Please name just one Power 5 school that has not had their share of decommits. It is all about money and if a university does not have their NIL act together then gathering a bunch of 5⭐ and high 4⭐ commits is worthless .

Yes, the recruiting landscape is different now with NIL in the mix. However, we have to be able to see the forest from the trees. I follow up other Pac-12 programs like Oregon in recruiting. They don't seem to have the same problems. What is the real issue here?
The starting NIL at Oregon every year starts with 20 million courtesy of Phil Knight and OSU is right behind them.

@@LockedOnUSC Yup… been following recruiting for decades. Sometimes I really can feel it. I remember feeling that D’anthony Thomas wasn’t 100% in and on signing day he flipped. I will say this though. If we have a strong season we will get some other really good players. But Lincoln has to coach up this year. The rest of the country thinks we are afraid to compete. And it’s becoming increasingly difficult to argue against the naysayers

So Terry canceled his visit this weekend? I think it's just hard to get these kids from the south. I think we still look good for a rebuilding program. We are still in rebuild mode after the sanctions+Helton gutted the program.

@@Sportsgeek1991 I disagree.. It's going to take more time than usual to build the program back. The recruits remember all those years of mediocrity when they were young teens. I think we could have done it faster if there was no NIL. But in the NIL era it's going to take longer. It might be similar to Michigan's situation under Habrough. It took Harbough 9 years to win an NC. Harbough had a losing season during covid and also an 8-5 year before he really got it rolling.

Marc there's a big difference in traveling with a Pac12 schedule and Big10. Traveling exhaustion is a thing, adding another cross country game along with ND and then more traveling if we make CFP is real. Fans only concern is entertainment. Riley has to add keeping fresh and healthy guys.
They used to hold these at Redondo Union. Better lighting. Why Mira Costa? Oh well!

Welcome to the new age of CFB recruiting…no longer is “my word is my bond” true. Sure, we’re dealing with 17 and 18 year-old KIDS, and their decisions change with the direction of the blowing wind. Second, for (too many) recruits, it’s all about “the bag” they’re offered, and now that they get paid just to visit, all the more so. Third, in order to get/keep KIDS from across the country, they either have to really want to see the other side of the country, or they want to get away from something in their area. Now that we have the “dogs” to develop players, we need to laser-focus on West Coast recruits, regardless of their “star rating”, which is subjective at best. Fourth, I don’t blame the recruits for wanting to wait and see if things really are different at SC, and don’t be mistaken that Georgia, Auburn, et al, aren’t pounding that into their heads!
We ALL need to wait and see what the product on the field looks like, then we’ll have a better idea of where our program is headed.

Of course Riley would want the tough non-conf games removed from the schedule. He was blasted in the media and by fans for his teams performance last year. USC overpaid for their coaching staff and they are feeling the pressure to deliver wins.

Riley and SC did not even want Oregon in the BIG 10. Now they are running from every SEC team. Riley is looking out for his job. Who didn't know that SC was soft? Everyone in the PAC 12 knew SC was soft and they have known it for the last decade plus.
As for the commit who flipped…oh well, it’s gonna happen. Cancelling Ole Miss…it does make the route to the playoffs tougher for both teams, but I wish they hadn’t done that. It’s big games like those that brings out the best in players and garners lots of eyeballs. FTFO BEAT LSU!

My dad took me to my first USC game in 1974. Coliseum vs Notre Dame. I want to play EVERYONE and anyone. Fight On!!!

I’m saying this everywhere… the Michigan model is the way to go. They won it all with a bunch of 12-15 ranked classes. How? Because they had and have an amazing developmental staff and they pick up high potential, high character kids to build their culture. They lost half their staff and still didn’t have a big exodus like we all predicted. They won the natty with 4-6 year players. They lost most of their starters but still have guys who have been in the program 3-4 years. Long term, this is the way to go. Pay top dollar for staff and get a top 15 class.
If you chase 5-stars you will dump $30 million on a roster and lose guys every year the second they don’t start or when someone hands them a bigger bag. You can’t build a culture that way.

It's not just about selling USC anymore. LR better learn how to read kids personalities these days .
My take is what is going on is very predicable in today's world . My big concern is coaches like a Saban ( fill in the name ) will get fed up with all the flipping , kids saying things you'd like to tell them to shove it.
LR needs to be encouraged . He's earning his salary.
And Marc my take is it's going to get worse once the actual paying takes place kids will move , change schools maybe 40% of your roster every year.

No Marc, there's being hard, and being ridiculous. Why dont they just play 3 non cons against ND, Bama and Texas every year. Let everyone else play soft schedules and SC play the hardest one because we are SC! Then we go 8--4 or worse and everyone says We suck!! Yeah but we played the hardest schedule!! It was a mutual agreement between both schools. I guess the Big 10 plus ND, plus UCLA in the even years, plus the the Big 10 championship game if they get there isnt tough enough! They're they only team that plays ND out of conference EVERY single year. No one else does. So while Im disappointed the Ole Miss series was canceled, we'll be OK. ND, Michigan, Ohio St, Penn St, UCLA, Washington, Oregon, etc ever year suits me just fine. We'll save Ole Miss, LSU, etc for the playoffs

After reviewing the news coming out of SC football recruiting I have now formed a somewhat of an informed opinion. One that most podcasters can’t say in fear of loosing their press passes .

SC football is now screwed. The administration along with the Collective is a shit show . A complete mess like the last 12 years . Why ?
The coaches do a great job and get commitments from the best HS players in the country . They make financial promises to these players and then the admin and the collective screw them and reneg on their promises . Making the coaches look like liars and undermining the credibility of them and the school . This will get out to other recruits, so they too will leave . And on top of this so will the coaches .
What a clown show , lack of cohesive team work and communication from Carol , to Jen to Lincoln to HOV . It is embarrassing and if it continues one more week kiss 2025 season and beyond away . Plus loosing the coaching staff including Riley . This could put USC football in the wilderness for another decade . WTF is wrong with these people . If you don’t want to play the NIL game so be it , but don’t lie to players , parents , agents and the fans . Cohen recently went on several interviews saying they have and are fixing HOV . No credibility I don’t know how she , Carol and the head of HOV survive if SC football does . Can’t see it . Total arrogance and incompetence. They have to go !

This was so obvious. Did anyone think it was normal for SC to get two 5 stars in the top 15? Come on man. It was solely money and when other schools come calling that offer more money, those kids are gone. There is nothing that SC can offer kids that can compete with most top schools these days. Add the fact that SC has not won anything in the last 20 years and these kids have never seen SC win anything, there is no incentive. Lewis is not staying with SC. Auburn will definitely turn him away. Playing time is the biggest consideration.
These top schools are trying to be undefeated like Floyd Mayweather in Boxing. Just like all the Champions of today. Cherry 🍒 Picking. (WEAK)!
Rileys recruiting looked a lot like this at OU as well. Lots of early commitments then decomittments. And not just on the defensive side - look at Brock Vandgergriff and Luther Burden - both of those dudes did the same thing to Riley when he was at OU. I think it’s how Riley recruits - allows for soft commitments.
Can't say recruiting is fluid and then say the optics don't look good. Literally makes 0 sense.

Marc have you seen Ohio State, Michigan, and Penn State’s OOC schedules? If you’re ok with the move to the Big10, you should be ok with USC’s schedule. You’ll be the first to put up a complaining video if too many players are hurt because of tough games. We still are the only team to not have played an FCS school. Get over it.

I read Ol Miss is the one instigating the schedule change because the SEC is talking about playing nine conference games, instead of eight.....like the Big 10 conference. Playing eight conference games gives SEC teams an advantage. When Alabama was winning National Championships while scheduling eight conference games and playing Ball State and other easy non conference games, nobody questioned that philosophy. Now that USC Is rethinking their future, all the haters couldn't wait to tell everyone USC and Lincoln Riley are trying to escape playing tough teams.. I can't believe you, Mark, fell for the BS.
