    No one, can be "Larry Burns selling googly-eyed walnuts/rocks, local squash candy and stressed out pepsi bottles, through the window of a broken down train carriage" funny ever again...Semper Fudge, Rodney Dangerfield; You had more bread than a prison meatloaf.
    *Edited from here* -- I made this video when I was 15 years old. At that time, I understood a lot of the nuanced jokes that The Simpsons made; even when they started to venture into the absurdity and nonsense seasons (S09 to S15). Without a doubt though, Larry Burns is the best. To be able to have hysterically-nothing phrases like walking mailbox and Chinese motorcycle, in a mainstream show, was/is paramount. The writers had a celebrity comedian as a guest, and decided to center him in a fake kidnapping where Homer cultivates the plan and Larry blithely goes along with it. No show (animated series/movie) comes remotely close to how exceptionally pointless yet tacitly familiar the Larry Burns episode is. Nowadays, any show that has a celebrity guest, will assign the guest as a "cameo"... or at the most, slap the audience in the face with the egregious fact that this celebrity is acting/voicing this particular character (from Shrek and Eddie Murphy, to Bee Movie and like, every celebrity voice in that movie). This is why The Simpsons will always remain popular; they're not drowned in oceans of impressiveness or randomness or utterly meaningless low-brow toilet humor (like Rick and Morty) - Again, Semper Fudge, Rogney Dangerfield; you will always and forever, make with the yakety yak yak.

      Yeah, you didn't understand when you were 15 or when you posted the comment. It's a walk-in mailbox. And the "Chinese motorcycle" joke just means Chinese-made motorcycles are poorly made. Even "stressed out pepsi bottles", I know he pronounces it like that but it's obviously STRETCHED out. What joke did you think you were getting, that Larry Burns just speaks in word salads all the time? He's not Homsar.

    One of the hallmarks of the Golden Age of Simpsons: when celebrity guest stars performed original characters instead of merely making promotional cameos.

    • @harveywallbanger3123
      @harveywallbanger3123 Před 3 lety +129

      Like everything else on the show during the golden age, the unique aspects that made them hugely popular were eventually overexploited. Genuinely talented and famous actors used to ASK to play original characters on the Simpsons out of appreciation for the show. The fact that they were actual roles and not merely cameos made it genuinely entertaining.
      Unfortunately, this quickly turned into "getting on the Simpsons is a status symbol", and FOX turned it from an artist's collaboration into a monetized promotional tool. Your agent pays Mike Scully, and we write you into an episode. This started out as somewhat cute and over the course of just 1 season ended up with the fam fighting an alligator at Spring Break with Kid Rock & Joe C. End of golden age.

      You'd have no idea, how many times I've traveled across American roads, and just yearned for something like a Larry Burns stand... just a stand that you can get something to remember your visit (??? -- I can't think of any memory where I remembered my expedition because I, or my parents, purchased something -- which is just, all the more, painfully realistic when a cartoon refers to that kind of thing). Not to mention the fact that it's like the most American thing to sell crap that's too nice for yu. The real stinger though, is that Larry, who looks like he lives in the heartland of America, is desperate (he needs a new pair of everything) and therefore he has to sell stuff he thinks tourists (rich Americans) would buy. -- This show...
