Great video. We've loads of these in Ireland too. We call them Corr Uaine (means twisted green creature) pronounced Kurr-win-a. A traditional way of catching them here is a biteen of sheep wool dyed orange, red or black sheep wool and put that onto string and throw it out. The fishes teeth get tangled in the fibres of the wool and you pull them in gently. This method is still done with handline and on a rod and reel
The garfish you guys get over there are just a bit bigger than what we get here in South Australia! Lol cracking session!
Love to sit and watch your videos me and my little girl (sheâs two) canât wait to go fishing in summer next year just to cold đ„¶ for little one now but mummy (me) got her a kids magnet fishing rod and magnet fish to keep her going till then enjoy your fishing trips
Really enjoy your videos and all the banter, and all the foraging! Well done.
''And you can see it ends up a really brown consistency''
Lol
In Australia we call these âlong toms.â Iâve never seen them in big numbers. I saw a video clip where they were caught with a length of red wool attached to a hook, slowly retrieved like a lure and these fish would bite and then roll repeatedly entangling their beaks on the wool. You had a great session, well done.
Yes - that's a good way to catch them. Wool!
Spider web has be traditionally used to catch them in some areas also
Another awesome Smash Fishing production, what a session. Keep them coming Jay TNX
Cracking fun to catch Garfish(aka little Marlin....lol) and using Mackeral(aka little Tuna....lol) as bait. Love it when you hook into one as they always generally leap out of the water, great to use very light gear to.
Not a bad choice of sauce to use either. Trying to remember if I have eaten Garfish before, I've caught them but don't think I kept them.
Great video and good catch cheers Jay aka SMASH!. Tight lines and stay safe.
Haha that sauce was a little hot for me but taste nice , garfish are a little bit of a pain to prep as they stink but great eating mate
Lol @@SMASHFISHINGyeah thought so and TBH a sauce with little heat would work well as Garfish is a delicate taste/fish so you need a a sauce that won't be over powering.đđ¶đđ
The other day I was using mackerel bait and the tiny pollock were taking it, I tried prawn and started getting Garfish and the tiny pollock left it alone!
@@SMASHFISHING the garage in America are tanks I tell you. It's like a garfish from where you are from but paddle fins and armor
I meant to say gar
Used to love catching long toms green bones garfish I would use a perch lure with a nice bit of smelly mackerel great t bait for Tope smooth hound bull huss and thornback ray I used a chum bag mashed bread liquid mackerel and pilchard oil in a onion bag with a rock on a rope on the life boat jetty love it when they tail walk tight lines ladsđđđŒ from Marcus
When I was growing up in mevagissey I used to catch a heep of garfish, was told by the old fisherman that you couldn't eat, them, so we chucked them back.
In my experience a lot of ' old
fishermen ' are opinionated notes and self appointed experts .
Yes, they do know about commercial fishing but apart from
that.....
absolutely wonderful mate! :) keep it up!
Bought back a lot of memories fishing for Garfish in Cornwall, I didn't catch any but my wife did, it was great fun on light coarse fishing tackle. Nice video and cook up thanks for posting.
Thanks David đ
These little buggers are fun to catch with light perch gear and spoons preferably single hook spoons
In Oct 1972 a needle nose gar threw a hook and it went into my left eye. About nine hours later an eye surgeon removed the hook. It permanently damaged my left eye, so I have not had any depth perception since then. That happened on the Amador Causeway near Panama City, Panama.
Hey mate, excellent video catching and cooking long northern garfish. I wish we had your long northern garfish in australia. Send some our way oneday. Great cracking fun.
You should try smoking the gar and making a smoked gar fish dip. Mitchell & Glenn made it a couple times on Swamp People.
That was a proper Smash Fishing episode.
Those longnose are excellent grilled over the fire with simple salt and pepper.
Great video! Love your mug collection above your cupboards in the kitchen!
Good to see you fishing,đŁđŁ

Great vid chiefđ
Great session and a great video. Iv caught a few of them in landing nets but never on a rod. Have to try it at some point. Keep up the great work.
Thanks mate
Just goes to show, a simple rod set up, decent bait, you donât need big fish to have a great days fishing.
Plus the end result looks delicious.
Amen to that mate
Great video again Smash & Sam you make a good team together đđ»
Excellent
I caught 3 of these yesterday, delicious
Thanks for another great video Jay! I thought the Garr fish was going to be like an Eel and you would have to peel the skin from the flash. Very interesting video Learn't something new today. Best wishes
Float fishing is so fun!
I like the fish twist ending!!! Hehehe...
Smash: You can see how much these fish love to fight...
Me: Watching a fish skip across the waters surface and crash into the rock wall.
Your statement is pretty true to be fair lol thanks for watching
Ooohhhh I love garfish. So tasty!! Will enjoy this vid!!!
Take care!!
We actually have garfish festival here! We get so many here but mostly during summer.
We call them âhornfiskâ.
We never filet them. We cut them in chunks, turn them in seasoned flour, fry them in butter and eat them off the bone. Skin gets nice and crispy. Just served with butter, boiled potatoes and fresh parsley! Yum!!
(I heard a doggy!!! đ congratulations? đ¶đŠźđâđŠș)
Great video, thanks. I prefer to leave the rubby-dubby out of it; the garfish slime is enough to play with. I like to leave the flesh on the bones then lightly steam them with some added salt. Provided they are steamed right, the fish pulls off the bones easily, leaving the skeleton in place. However, too little steam means the flesh does not come away easily, leading to breaking the skeleton; too much and the skeleton falls apart. The green bones add a bit of colour to the whole thing. All the best.
I never keep garfish but next time i will ascually try this out! nice video
I like your videos.....thanks ....thumbs up for your efforts you put into.
Thanks mate
great video
I fucking love that at 0:04 when you snatch that huge Larry and Sam is all "OHHH HELL".
BRILLIANT â€
Hell yea Cracking day there smash one of your best videos for me yeaaaa boyyyyy
Thanks đ
Good content!!!
Here on the Baltic sea we call them poor man's marlin. đ
Same thing in Hawaii, more of a pest and a bait stealer to me but people target the bigger ones. We call this fish Aha out in the islands
The gar fish are a beautiful color!
Love the new intro!!
Tempurai gar is really tasty with a sweet chilli sauce dip
Nice one Jay. Iâve. Never eaten garfish, but after seeing this I might give them a try
Well worth a try đ
Atta boy!
try a carp spomb to get the bread mix rite in the zone, great video as always smash.
I love fishing, i seriously need to get back out and start doing it again
Hell yeah
I cant wait til yall start throwing the wheels out again for spiders. And armour foraging. Anyway on to watch the video. Thanks smash đ
Same mate haha
In the land downunder we call them Long Toms our garfish are much smaller but nicer to eat
Great video. A species I've never seen.
Thanks for watching
camera-on-the-chest-style is the way to go! it really brings the sizes and scenery into perspective, IMMERSIVE!!! lol b well, man!
Great vid bro! The colour of that chilli sauce is horrendous!
those garfish look like what we call long tom here in oz our garfish only have a top bill like a marlin still great eating little fish stuffed with spicy salsa and bread crumb yummo
23 in one session think Iv only ever caught 5 in my life time lol đ another great video pal
Haha all about the chum mate thanks for watching
Nice catches of the gar fish we call em up in Suffolk. Have u seen videos of people catching them with no hook just cotton skimming across the surface with a kite. There bill and teeth get caught up in the cotton and they then just pull them in. Tight lines.
Yes iv had them on nitting cotton , great fun ! Also goby can be caught the same way
Great video. That fish deserved something more elaborate than fish fingers.
Garfish in November, wow you're lucky.
Like the good old sea anglers club comps catching tones of them đ
You know it Brendan đ„
Have to a video together mate đđ
It's nice when your bait is also good to eat. we've fried up left over chicken livers after a day of catfishing here in the Southern US. Gar here are a lot larger than that and typically not eaten but they can be if you can get into them.. might need a chainsaw..
Ace video mate never caught one myself may give it a go :)
Well worth a go mate really fun fish to catch
Another great informative vid jayđ was nice to see u post on Craig Evans last vid comments,, be great to see u both do a foraging cook up session,,, hell yeah đđŽó §ó ąó ·ó Źó łó żđŽó §ó ąó ·ó Źó łó ż
Thanks Kevin , Craig and I have spoken about a colab an will definitely happen in the future đ
That be epic mate,, definitely a mega sub boost for you both and would be a must watch đđđđŽó §ó ąó ·ó Źó łó żđ„đ„đ
In the US Midwest we've got alligator gar. Get over 100 pounds and 8 feet long. Ruin every topwater plug you got.
New Intro: hell Yeah
Its the green bones that puts me off, a bit like eating snot. Definitely an acquired taste. Anyway, the thing to remember here is what that chum brings in behind the garfish.
Be prepared for a big pollack or bass, or even a larger visitor. Nice one, Jay.
Well said mate
Wussing out on that hot sauce big boy! đđ
Shit you got me đđ
Great fun but they smell awful! I usually catch them by accident when fishing for mackerel. Yes they make good bait but I don't have enough space in the freezer - it's all mackerel. So I put them all back!
Garfish goujons, top technique, will definitely copy
Well worth a try đ thanks for watching
Epic! Love it!! Where do you find your fish oil Smash?!
Also whatâs all that green shite on some of them?
Also I suppose you could remove the bones like a mackeral fillet by cutting them out in a strip. Is the meat on the other side of the bones alright?
The simple pleasures in life. Smash in his element. Freaky beaks on those fish and really weird that they have blue/ green bones. Surely they are the only creature on the planet with different coloured bones??
Yeah there nippy little things but great fun , Iâm not sure about other fish , good question
Awesome mate !
Love that hot pepper sauce, does the fish stand up to it ?
the spanish love the garr fish
I caught a 76 cm with polespear! It was enromous
I really enjoyed this video all the way up to when you start throwing them into the rockpool leaving them to suffocate.
Hi smash my mum saw you today when you had come up from the beach and the dog she was walking came over to you and looked in your bucket. anyway im a big fan thanks for the vids
Yes that was this video mate haha thanks for watching đ„
They are beautiful fish I love the color and there all meat
You Guernsey guys have some really cool sea creatures and a beautiful island.
