Great video. We've loads of these in Ireland too. We call them Corr Uaine (means twisted green creature) pronounced Kurr-win-a. A traditional way of catching them here is a biteen of sheep wool dyed orange, red or black sheep wool and put that onto string and throw it out. The fishes teeth get tangled in the fibres of the wool and you pull them in gently. This method is still done with handline and on a rod and reel

In Australia we call these “long toms.” I’ve never seen them in big numbers. I saw a video clip where they were caught with a length of red wool attached to a hook, slowly retrieved like a lure and these fish would bite and then roll repeatedly entangling their beaks on the wool. You had a great session, well done.

Cracking fun to catch Garfish(aka little Marlin....lol) and using Mackeral(aka little Tuna....lol) as bait. Love it when you hook into one as they always generally leap out of the water, great to use very light gear to.
Not a bad choice of sauce to use either. Trying to remember if I have eaten Garfish before, I've caught them but don't think I kept them.
Great video and good catch cheers Jay aka SMASH!. Tight lines and stay safe.

In Oct 1972 a needle nose gar threw a hook and it went into my left eye. About nine hours later an eye surgeon removed the hook. It permanently damaged my left eye, so I have not had any depth perception since then. That happened on the Amador Causeway near Panama City, Panama.

Great video, thanks. I prefer to leave the rubby-dubby out of it; the garfish slime is enough to play with. I like to leave the flesh on the bones then lightly steam them with some added salt. Provided they are steamed right, the fish pulls off the bones easily, leaving the skeleton in place. However, too little steam means the flesh does not come away easily, leading to breaking the skeleton; too much and the skeleton falls apart. The green bones add a bit of colour to the whole thing. All the best.
