    Hi im 13 and I really wanna work in the finance field. Is there anything I can do now to assist me in my future when I get a job and grow my knowledge? Also, what are the most high paying jobs that I can get with a degree in financial engineering? Does taking a business and administration high school program help? Does financial engineering deal with some computer science? If yes, then what are some examples? Can I live a confortable life in LA if i earn 6 figures because I heard LA is a bit more expensive. I’ll appreciate it if anybody with experience can answer these questions. Thanks!

    • @Mohdkh29
      @Mohdkh29 Před 2 lety

      Business administration in high school would be very good . On the other hand, no computer science has nothing to do with financial engineering as financial engineering is basically a fancy word for combined degree of statistics and finance. The best thing you can do is taking subjects related to statistics.

    Thanks for the video Mina. I’m considering doing an mfe too. Seems to me those programs provide somewhat superficial training in stats/ML, stochastic calc, coding etc. and more geared toward getting a job to students who already know those. Would you agree?

    • @minayml
      @minayml  Před 3 lety

      Hi Murad, thanks for the question. Partially! The program requires student with statistics and other coding background before entering into the program. That enables the courses to be fast-paced, however, ML courses are introductory. That being said, I find the courses gave me ability to to dive deep into topics I want to learn afterward.

  • @saikartheeksharvirala5264

    Hi Mina. Thank you for sharing your experience. I am an incoming UCLA mfe candidate. I am concerned regarding one thing. You mentioned that the program doesn’t cover as much math and statistical techniques. So, is the job market, especially for quant research, quant strategist, quant trader roles, require the depth in math and statistical techniques that the UCLA program lacks in? And how can I ensure that I am competitive enough when I am entering the job market?
    Also, does the program give enough emphasis to data science? Considering that the quant research/trading roles are increasingly focused on data science and ML.
    Thank you, Mina

    • @minayml
      @minayml  Před 3 lety +3

      Hi Sai, congrats! And thanks for asking these questions. Quant research and quant strategist require deeper math/stats techniques, and UCLA MFE alumni have gone onto the two roles to my knowledge. While the program doesn't dive into math and statistics like theoretical programs, our professors always provide readings of theories and proof, it's up to students to spend time on them. MFE has given me foundation and ability to understand papers/methodologies and *apply* them (important to me and anyone who want to be in quant research/strat/trading role). In general, I wouldn't be worried about the program's focus on application instead of theories, and I will recommend spending time to do readings and understand pro/cons of each model/methodologies even after understanding how to code them.
      The program only offers introduction to machine learning, data analytics, and econometrics. My classmates who wants to learn more have been able to enrol in higher level ML classes outside of MFE program inside UCLA separately. While introduction is far from proficiency, practices in projects, hmwk, and reading will take you further.

      Maybe /Maybe this field is HUGE ,VERY HUGE and it requires intensive coding and math and You being a chartered accountant (backward finance),it is unlikely that they are willing to admit you but but because this field is so broad that every other person has a lot different to offer like it is a combination of computer science, Mathematics,Business and Statistics (you will fit in the business domain )but shifting to all of these will take a lot of time and effort probably a decade of you will try to go hedge funds.

      @@heinrichtrotter5442 Hi Heinrich, thanks for the reply! The MFE students at UCLA complete an approximately 6-month capstone project with industry companies, called Applied Finance Project, in the place of thesis/dissertation.

      @@minayml Thanks Mina. The query is because I am a CFA and an FRM Charterholder. I want to pursue Quant Finance but at the same time would love to learn something new. For e.g. coding in R or Python. What do you believe I should take up incrementally. Else CQF is another option for me. In any case it has to be market oriented (trading alto, quant, HFT) and advanced in nature. My undergrad was in Engineering and Maths. On both counts I believe I am good.

      @@abhishekbal399 Sounds good. I believe both R and Python would be helpful. R for statistical programming, Python for data wrangling and ML packages.

    Hey Mina! I am an industrial engineering student at one of the best universities in Turkey. This is my first year. My biggest dream is going to the USA or Canada for MFE programs. Is it possible to find MFE programs with scholarship? Thank you for your videos. Greetings from Turkey
