This was sung by Glenn Yarbrough. Pay attention to the lyrics. You'll be glad you did. The message is extremely profound and full of truth. I loved this song as a child many, many years ago and I still love it. I've only just introduced the video and this unforgettable song to my child. May she remember it for a long time to come.
I love his voice and I haven't heard anyone who sounds like him or even close to it. I remember watching this movie as A kid and I still like watching it.
Holy. Shit. This was my favorite movie when I was like 5. I fell in love with The Lord of the Rings at a very young age, and this was my favorite song in all the animated series. I LOVE this song!
Classic nostalgia. This is one of my favorite animated films; the Ranklin/Bass version of ROTK comes close, but is sadly hampered by the more serious and violent plot.
I had trouble enough taking this movie seriously when I was younger and after the whole 'Lemmiwinks' episode I'm almost completely incapable of watching this. This is still a true classic in every notion.
My dad used to check out the 16mm reels for this movie from our metro library when we were little. I'd rather thread 2 or 3 reels in sequential order into a 16mm film projector like we learned to do as children for Friday night movies (pre-VHS) than watch dozens of randomly shuffled video movie clips with commercials dropped like dog turds in the middle of scenes. How times have changed. (Sigh)
"A man whose a dreamer, and never takes leave, who thinks of a world that is just make believe, will never know passion, will never know pain..." These are indeed timeless lyrics. I relate to the song very deeply.
best of all the LOTR movies. the mythical live acion verion wont be anywhere near as good as this incredible piece of art. When i was a kid i must've watched it once a week. now i cant find the tape.
Eldeecue I don't think The Hobbit is anti-war, I think it's anti-"war for stupid reasons". Gold and gems are a pretty stupid thing to spill blood over.
"A great adventure is lying for you ahead Hurry onward Lemmiwinks, or you will soon be dead" A great parody song from South Park of this opening ballad
This movie was my childhood. This and Flight of Dragons. Awesome music, Great animation, absolutely brilliant. Im scared that when the hobbit comes out live, it'll ruin this. Please, Peter Jackson, Remember the past.
Personally, I prefer the animated hobbit vs any other L.O.T.R. movies. They can't hold a candle. This song is no exception. Sums up the entire film beautifully.
my last post never showed up...i read the book as a child and have the movie on vhs........still almost makes me cry........i hate how we have to live now
so would i. i saw this as a kid and i loved it. this movie turned me into a nerd lol. my grandmother knew what a hobbit was and i was like. hob-what? good times
You know what my favorite part of this video is? Well, firstly, the fabulous warbling of Glen Yaborough's voice, but mostly I love the fact that at 1:30 there is someone in the cast identified simply as "Theodore". No last name. I've always wondered about this mysterious Theodore...
@HammockerSam Haha, me too. The Hobbit was the one movie I watched over and over and over again as a boy. I was a little introvert yearning for adventure - I remember this song in particular, vividly, almost 20 years later. I remember it whenever I go out and look at the moon at night, stressed out. It never fails to calm me. Reality seems dim at times, but the love of life this stuff inspires is priceless. ;) I'm definitely finding a way for my future kids to watch this.
While I might be forced to admit that PJ's LOTR ....in a quantitative sense, beat the animated versions.... I guarantee you his Hobbit will NOT hold a candle to the Rankin/Bass version. The Hobbit as a story is ...too folky, too innocent, too anti-war for him to ever do justice to. I'll guarantee he'll exclude the most important line of the Hobbit....at the end where Bilbo says, "Thorin is right, I just will _never_ understand war...."
i love this movie, book, and song! i also have the movie on vhs, and on dvd too. sadly, the sound on the dvd is missing chunks. it's like they put the left side sound balance in and forgot about the right side :(
I wish I could find an mp3 version of this song! And several of the others as well, but they probably didn't even make a soundtrack, since it was made in 77.
What's the significance of "King" Bilbo switching swords at 1:20 in his dream? I'm aware that it doesn't really happen in the story, I was just curious as to what it means.
@Murilliom Agreed!!!! Old Pete Jackson needs to re-watch these and learn from them. Honestly it should be read as "Peter Jackson Interpretation of Lord of the Rings" cause it does not follow the books very well. I can point out something wrong in almost every single scene of Peter Jackson LOTR..lol I know that makes me a nerd but @ least I can read XD

I've paid attention to the lyrics. Words of wisdom in the song.
his voice lives in infamy ❤
Rest In Peace Orson Bean, the voice of Bilbo Baggins (1928-2020)
I love his voice and I haven't heard anyone who sounds like him or even close to it. I remember watching this movie as A kid and I still like watching it.
RIP Christopher Tolkien. May you meet your father again in Heaven.
"It's time you stop thinking and wasting the day" hits hard, I think we can all learn from that
Holy. Shit.
This was my favorite movie when I was like 5. I fell in love with The Lord of the Rings at a very young age, and this was my favorite song in all the animated series. I LOVE this song!

I always felt LOTR is pretty dark and violent it just seems less so because we see it through Hobbits' filter
My favorite song from either of the Rankin/Bass Middle-earth films!
Ah, Glenn Yarborough and his legendary vibrato. I love that man.
this song is pretty deep in you listen to the lyrics
For those accustomed to puddles, even the shallow water is deep.
So much better than the new “Hobbit” trilogy! 😎
One of the greatest memories from my childhood. Even though parts of the book were removed and changed it's still a masterpiece!
I had trouble enough taking this movie seriously when I was younger and after the whole 'Lemmiwinks' episode I'm almost completely incapable of watching this.
This is still a true classic in every notion.
This is my whole childhood. I don't know how many times I watched this as a kid. It's awesome.
The chances, the changes are all yours to make; the mold of your life is in your hands to break. True words of wisdom!!
While other kids were watching Disney, I watched Aliens, Star Wars, and of course this! And when LOTR films came out, I was addicted.
My dad used to check out the 16mm reels for this movie from our metro library when we were little. This is such a beautiful song
best of all the LOTR movies. the mythical live acion verion wont be anywhere near as good as this incredible piece of art. When i was a kid i must've watched it once a week. now i cant find the tape.
i had the LP of this brings back a lot of memories thanks
This is a such a great movie!! I grew up watching it...and I love this song!! :D
I like this song as well as his version of The Road Goes Ever On.
The Hobbit, Lord of the Rings and Return of the King cartoons are better than what any live movie could ever dream to achieve.
I remember watching this over and over and over when i was a little kid...I LOVED IT!!! i still do!
Yes! Please do all of the songs. They have always been my favorite.
Always loved this video and song. Glenn Yarbrough has one of the best voices in folk music.
when i was little this song used to make me teary eyed. dont know why.
Eldeecue I don't think The Hobbit is anti-war, I think it's anti-"war for stupid reasons". Gold and gems are a pretty stupid thing to spill blood over.
Yet wars are fought all the time for those reasons
@@josephjohnson6849 How does that go against my statement in any way?
@@OriginalAkivara it's not
I always loved this classic
Thanks for posting it up. This brings back so many old memories.
Love this song
"A great adventure is lying for you ahead

I am granny, but l want to watch cartoon
Oh well🤷🏼♂️🤓😎✌🏻
Weirdly, this song hits me so hard and it helps me get to work sometimes or just get out of bed
I used to own all of these on video. They were pretty cool. Wish I still had them.
how can people dislike a song like this?
Gandalf did the old trick of one by one, like with Beorn. Or in the book he did.
Personally, I prefer the animated hobbit vs any other L.O.T.R. movies. They can't hold a candle. This song is no exception. Sums up the entire film beautifully.
My third Favorite song from all of the Hobbit n Lotr movies..
oh this movie brings back childhood memories. =) ill always love this song. =)
This brings me back, CLASSIC
my last post never showed up...i read the book as a child and have the movie on vhs........still almost makes me cry........i hate how we have to live now
The movie actually came out in 1977.........awesome movie though with great music.
Such timeless wisdom...
great song to use for the opening credits
set a great tone 4 the rest of the film.
Poor Bilbo, he didn't ask for a bunch of ass holes to barge in on him and force him on an adventure
That's what I thought. I feel so bad for Bilbo
He was all the better for it at the end. It was truly, the greatest adventure.
Very nice song about every man and every unseen events of a person's life. All a person has to do is but decide.
I love this movie. Its what first introduced me to the great world of J.R.R. Tolkien.
I also what to embark on an epic adventure.
Who's with me?
The singer is Glenn Yarbrough.
so would i. i saw this as a kid and i loved it. this movie turned me into a nerd lol. my grandmother knew what a hobbit was and i was like. hob-what? good times
I so love this song and movie. I have this movie along with the other 2 that go with it.
Great song by a fantastic singer, Glenn Yarbrough.
a wonderful movie.
an even better book.
and an inspiration!
I love this movie

I believe he was a monk.
Some religious dude I think, bc he's called brother Theodore
No he was a comedian
read the book and seen this as a child.....almost 30 years ago....so bear with me ok
@zoidburg111 I know... This movie IS my childhood, and this song fills me with wonderful memories. They just don't make movies like they used to...
Best Movie EVUH!

Rip to good animated film.
sad to think that many of those dwarfs died, and funny to think that bombur get so fat that he needs 6 dwarfs to carrie him around

Lemmiwinks!
At 1:04 amazingness begins
exaktly! he just wanted to be in time for dinner ;)
4 people stayed in the Shire instead of going on the Greatest Adventure...
Can you blame them? The shire seems a wonderful peaceful place and some would likely prefer a peaceful life to one fraught with adventure and danger.
Anyone know where i can get a download of this song?
This was the movie me to ta thatopened me to fantasy. This and Willow
RIP Orson Bean
Why is it no in stereo??
I agree
