An important holiday that honors those who have sacrificed their lives in service to the United States.
💥 1. Memorial Day Origins:
Originally called "Decoration Day," this tradition began in 1865, following the end of the Civil War, to decorate graves with flowers. Observed on May 30th each year, it was a day to remember fallen soldiers.
👉 After World War 1, the day expanded to honor military personnel who died in any U.S. war, and the name changed to Memorial Day.
💥 2. Date Change:
In 1971, the Uniform Monday Holiday Act shifted Memorial Day to the last Monday in May, marking the unofficial start of summer for many.
💥 3. Memorial Day Traditions:
On Memorial Day, American flags are flown at half-staff from sunrise until noon, then raised to full-staff until sunset.

👉 National Observance:
Each year at Arlington National Cemetery, a ceremony is held where a small American flag is placed on each grave. The President or Vice President traditionally lays a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
