    Kept you waiting, huh?
    It's been a while. Todays episode is... Making windows for the SWB v10 twin turbo patrol.
    your move ‪@RoamLyfe‬
    I'm fed up of seeing solid glass windows with crazy shipping fees, or insane prices on gullwing style windows, so I decided to make my own... and make it better.
    Mine uses a completely self designed mechanism to open the window, and I think it looks pretty good. A few points of note below:
    - it's not 100% finished
    - the SWB window is MASSIVE. I don't think there's a way to avoid it flexing a bit
    - there's no such thing as a perfect product
    That's about it.

    Here is a tip if you are using Fusion360 for your design work on a flat(ish) plane.
    Take an 1:1 scale photo, focusing on keeping the camera parallel to the work piece.
    Send to computer and open Fusion.
    Insert tab > Canvas > Insert from my computer
    Place picture on a plane > Opacity to 50% and OK
    Canvas dropdown > Right click on picture and click calibrate.
    Choose two known points on the photo, measured accurately in real life and enter measurement.
    Open new Sketch and simply draw directly over your picture (patrol rear window), I find the fit point spline tool to work the best for complicated curves.
    Save sketch as DXF and cut.
    This is the easiest way I have found of getting a near perfect DXF first time with large complicated 2D shapes. I hope this helps in future projects! loving the build!

      Gotta disagree with this if any precision is expected. Photo aparture never give a true scale to take dimensions from. While it might work with big tolerance items, this wasn't one. The angles I adjusted were done at less than 0.1 degrees each side, and you'd never get the accuracy reliably using this method. It's good to get a very rough idea of shape though.

      @ridiculousthings4x4  Před 6 měsíci +2

      I can see why you'd think that, but the other style doesn't have a "waterproof top edge" either. This way, if it's wet, the wet side remains facing outwards for brief openings, but if it's raining, yeah, inwards is better. There's no perfect solution to this.

    Ahh the dreaded swb window dilemma, one annoying part is that the frames have a slight convex bulge to them, so for flat glass it doesn't sit flush against the seal all the way
    I considered doing fixed acrylic for my rear windows when the sliding frame seals fully split, and using rivnuts to secure the panels into the opening, butyl tape or sikaflex and a glued in window seal. Painted black edges so the sealant isn't visible, I tried those wedge seals before and they look crap where they bunch up, rivnut/bolted to the frame might make it feel more secure than the window seals
    Most security fly screens and roller doors have a dual lock setup, if you wanted to eliminate the outside locking mechanism you could probably retro fit a dual lock to lock the centre at the top and bottom, link the pneumatic struts to the lock so the lock opens then the gas struts follow straight after, to stop them being flimsy bump or roll a few presses into the panel to match the window contour, and plug or spot weld 2 pressed braces on the inside of the panel to help mount the hardware to
    If you're after drawers for the back and want to keep the original rear seat, I bought two kings 500mm drawers for about 90 bucks each on special and they fit between the seats and door, with room on the sides to make a removable filler section
    I did look at the gull wings they sell for the swb patrols, I don't blame you for trying to make something better, their designs look like first effort prototypes they never bothered to rectify 🤦‍♂️ lmao

    • @ridiculousthings4x4
      @ridiculousthings4x4  Před 6 měsíci

      Even on the other companies website they're using photos of windows smeared with Sikaflex. I couldn't handle that kind of quality oversight. I've got a plan ready for the rear drawers, but there won't be any king's trash on this build 😏😏
