He is the coauthor of Street Design: The Secret to Great Cities and Towns (Wiley, January 2014). His work spans five continents and ranges from revitalizing historic downtowns to retrofitting suburbia. His projects include Plan El Paso, hailed as “America’s Best Smart Growth Plan,” Glenwood Park in Atlanta, and, locally, the dramatic makeover of downtown South Miami. Victor is a Fellow of the American Institute of Certified Planners. He served as the national chair of the Congress for the New Urbanism from 2010 - 2012. Victor is a board member of Friends of the Ludlam Trail. He’s also a regular bike commuter, veteran marathoner and four-time Ironman triathlete.

TED guys managed to impose the red carpet on the scene but didn't impose an audible sound standard. What a shame!

I have to wonder about the US in regard to this. I can't imagine there are not many American cities that do not have laws like those in Canada. I live in a city that went from 10k to 600k in 50 years pretty much all streets have trees it is a municipal requirement. Toronto has specific laws not only promoting trees but also protecting them. An aircraft picture of my home town shows only trees. Even cities like Regina in the middle of the prairies plants trees. Trees do cost money and must be looked after and sometimes replaced. The street next to ours lost almost all its trees in an ice storm and the city had too come back and remove the stumps and replace them.

They look good, they shade the street, clean the air, cool the earth, provide habitat, prevent t soil erosion and flooding.

I would not include the roadway in the "public realm" -it's where the oil cartels do business.

As an American Tree historian I need to suggest folks enjoy last of fully maturing trees as they will be last human specimens to surpass age 100 ever again. As after 1955, we no longer plant trees like they had back in old days. No, todays trees do not fatally suffer from modern pollution and debris filled soil. They just take 35-45 years for humans to do everything can to kill them....we shoot horses don't we?

Great insight and inspirational talk. Shame so many shots of bored-looking, yawning people were included, they really weren't required and as someone else mentioned, some interesting slides were missed while the bored, yawning people were on screen, which is disappointing. Great talk, dodgy production. :/

Love this talk! love these ideas!....but who is the camera person...speaker will be referring to his slideshow and the camera person won't show it. spends a lot of time on audience, focusing on pretty girls???...once stopped on a man yawning and wiping his eyes (inferring the man was bored?...then a girl texting during presentation...why is that being filmed?) fabulous talk!...terrible camera work

He didn't mention tree roots ruining people's property. Leaves clogging drains in the street. The street flooding due to too many leaves. And my personal favourite, leaves filling every crevice of my car.
I like trees as much as anyone but, when they cause issue to ones property, then I'm not a fan. Plus council's seem to be spending our money on trees but, won't maintain the street, that's nice...

Though your critique is worth taking in to account, I believe many Americans park their cars in garages. The additional issues of planting trees everywhere don't seem to outway the benefits.

All surface roots you see are just on their way to better locations without forced to grow over compacted soil.

Drains wouldn’t be necessary or clogged if leaves were allowed to fall upon biologically rich living soil, which absorbs water devours organic waste and, eliminates runoff ,working as a battery to store hydration which creates a stable cycle of moderate precipitation. floods and drought are the price we pay for our vain and wasteful use of concrete, creating a hideous impenetrable seal of sterility over the earths crust.

@@isidoreaerys8745, you're talking about that magic surface. Where are planet Earth touches the universe.
Yet scientists admit they don't know what makes up 75% of outer space, and have yet to categorize 75% all the unknown species in the soil.
