I came to this tutorial because I used Partition Wizard tool like I used to do always for enlarge memory partition, but this time gave me some errors while doing its job after restarting and booting the OS. then threw me some errors and my OS just didn't work anymore, so I reinstalled windows10 and tried instead this tutorial, and it worked very fine for me, thank you so much for this solution, new sub and greetings from Costa Rica.
7 months later - and your video is still saving sanity of people..thank you , for your amazing and thorough guide on how to increase recovery partition size so these updates can install.. unreal that windows can sort itself out to do this when it runs outta space.

Chris, I just want to say WOW and thank you for this STEP-BY-STEP video I've been on here for years and this is by far the best, and I was able to follow it with out getting lost. Even though it didn't fix the issue in my case, but that is because i tried to download Docker and when I uninstalled it that's when this issue started and it freezes my screen and then restarts my desktop on its own. I think I'm going to have to factory reinstall my desktop before it gets worse. But once again thank you for this and I just subscribed and am looking forward to checking out the rest of your vids.

Great video Chris, Much more clear directions than Window website offered! I originally did this off Microsoft's website directions but it wasn't successful. I did it again off your video directions and got it to work that time with window update completed! Thank you so much since I had to have this update for my work at home computer since my company's systems wouldn't work correctly without this update!

I appreciate this easy to follow detailed tutorial very much. Unfortunately, like the 50 other solutions I tried this month it doesn't work. I'm baffled. I have no windows errors of any kind. My recovery partition is has plenty of room. I'm running Windows 10 Home 22h2. I'm not a noob, I've been on Windows since v1. Every update has been flawless until January. Even though it didn't work I appreciate the run through, I picked up a couple of nuggets along the way, so thanks again!

Hey just wanted to hop in here and let you know that this helped me so much to get past the confusion I had with the shrink command. After your explanation I was able to successfully update my Server 2022!
Thanks. In my system, the recovery is partition 1 and the primary is partition 4. When I free up memory from primary it is unallocated to the right of primary (according to Disk Management) and is not contigous to the recovery partition. When I recreate the recovery partition, it recreate as the original size (not the new size). In reading further it appears that partitions can only be extended if they are adjacent to unallocated memory (?). It looks like diskpart cannot handle this scenario (there are other $$ tools that claim to, but I dont feel like paying for them.) Any suggestions?, otherwise I will wait for the fix from MS

So you basically said that i just need to wait for a official fix? I´ve been running into some problems lately with my pc like usb-divices disconnect and reconnect after 5 seconds or Valorant not starting. Could this be in correlation with this update? I´ve tried many things to fix these issues like restarting, updating grafic drivers and ofc windows itself
Thank you for patiently going through and explaining what each command did as you were doing it. My PC was a bit different, as I had two recovery drives. After deleting the recovery partition at the end of the list, and recreating it, it did not allocate the unallocated space to the new recovery partition. I ended up redoing the process, but deleting both of my recovery partitions, and then when I recreated the new recovery partition it had the space from both of the previous recovery partitions as well as the previous unallocated space, and then I was finally able to successfully install the update. It was only because you took the time to explain the process instead of just showing it, and then I was able to further research my issue, realizing that the unallocated space would not allocate to the new partition because there was a partition in between that and the first new recovery partition that I made, which enabled me to realize what I needed to do to fix the issue, as the unallocated space had gone to partition 3, and the first new recovery partition had gone to partition 5. After going back and deleting my new partition 5, and also deleting the other recovery partition (parition 4), I was then able to create a new recovery partition which had all the space allocated to it from the previous three partitions, which gave me plenty of room to finally be able to successfully install that pesky update. Thank you so much! I am deeply grateful.
Hey y'all, instead of trying to type out that horrible ID, you can first enter the command (for GUID partition table/GPT formatted drives): DISKPART> help create partition primary Then you can scroll down and copy the recovery partition ID by highlighting it, and pressing shift + control (ctrl) + C.

After waiting and waiting and waiting for MS to come out with a fix for this, I finally decided to try the Command Prompt disk part method and it worked perfectly! However, it is not for the faint of heart and I highly suggest you read up a bit to understand what you are doing, especially if you've never used Command Prompt before. You must type everything exactly. One wrong move and you could brick your computer. And if you don't know how to handle any twists and turns along the way, you could have problems. It really helps to understand a bit of what you're doing. So.... it was very rewarding to fix this problem myself. And probably a better move not to let MS come out with a new update that will mess with my partitions. DIY felt better. No guarantees, but worked for me. Tread carefully.
This was an amazing guide, I followed you along with the MS guide as just reading it was a tad confusing and your guide was perfect, The fact you covered the MBR was perfect as mine is MBR. One thing you missed on the MBR was after "create partition primary id=27" there is 1 more step for MBR and that's "set id=27" according to the MS guide. Thank you again
Great video, thank you. I was following with a website that gave these similar instructions but ran into problems. They never showed how to list your drives or find the OS and recov but you showed that in the first command.

BRILLIANT TUTORIAL. 100% worked. My other PC’s had no issue with the Windows update as the Recovery partition was over 550MB Microsoft has also update the Creation Tool for Version 22H2 and the Recovery partition size is now 550MB or there abouts.

Thank you so much! I randomly got this update today and it wasn't installing properly. My initial partition size was around 500MB. Increasing it to about 750MB solved the issue.

First of all: GREAT WORK! What an amazing guide! Had this issue within a Virtual Machine and this guide solve it! BTW, my disk does not have the GPT mark and it's not necessary. Now Windows Update is working normally.

@@AnthonyManzio I think if should now be around 800mb, the recovery drive should not have a volume letter assigned it should be hidden from view.

I hope the automatic fix that Microsoft should be releasing soon will help fix this for you!
Instead of 250, try 500; it should then work. (shrink desired=500 minimum=500)

yea I had noticed that as well, Microsoft is more focused on installing useless bloatware onto are systems rather than maintaining the security.

This error should not be causing other problems, I would re getting your pc tested to see why you are getting these other problems.
Im having issues with my USB devies as well as my internet being disocnnected.

I ended up redoing the process, but deleting both of my recovery partitions, and then when I recreated the new recovery partition it had the space from both of the previous recovery partitions as well as the previous unallocated space, and then I was finally able to successfully install the update. It was only because you took the time to explain the process instead of just showing it, and then I was able to further research my issue, realizing that the unallocated space would not allocate to the new partition because there was a partition in between that and the first new recovery partition that I made, which enabled me to realize what I needed to do to fix the issue, as the unallocated space had gone to partition 3, and the first new recovery partition had gone to partition 5. After going back and deleting my new partition 5, and also deleting the other recovery partition (parition 4), I was then able to create a new recovery partition which had all the space allocated to it from the previous three partitions, which gave me plenty of room to finally be able to successfully install that pesky update. Thank you so much! I am deeply grateful.

Hey y'all, instead of trying to type out that horrible ID, you can first enter the command (for GUID partition table/GPT formatted drives):
DISKPART> help create partition primary
Then you can scroll down and copy the recovery partition ID by highlighting it, and pressing shift + control (ctrl) + C.

After waiting and waiting and waiting for MS to come out with a fix for this, I finally decided to try the Command Prompt disk part method and it worked perfectly! However, it is not for the faint of heart and I highly suggest you read up a bit to understand what you are doing, especially if you've never used Command Prompt before. You must type everything exactly. One wrong move and you could brick your computer. And if you don't know how to handle any twists and turns along the way, you could have problems. It really helps to understand a bit of what you're doing. So.... it was very rewarding to fix this problem myself. And probably a better move not to let MS come out with a new update that will mess with my partitions. DIY felt better. No guarantees, but worked for me. Tread carefully.
This was an amazing guide, I followed you along with the MS guide as just reading it was a tad confusing and your guide was perfect, The fact you covered the MBR was perfect as mine is MBR. One thing you missed on the MBR was after "create partition primary id=27" there is 1 more step for MBR and that's "set id=27" according to the MS guide. Thank you again

100% worked.
My other PC’s had no issue with the Windows update as the Recovery partition was over 550MB
Microsoft has also update the Creation Tool for Version 22H2 and the Recovery partition size is now 550MB or there abouts.

Thank you so much! I randomly got this update today and it wasn't installing properly. My initial partition size was around 500MB. Increasing it to about 750MB solved the issue.

Had this issue within a Virtual Machine and this guide solve it! BTW, my disk does not have the GPT mark and it's not necessary. Now Windows Update is working normally.
