    PLEASE READ - You can help choose where we are going this summer for our spotting trip! Below you'll find a variety of comments by us. Give the ones you like a thumbs up, so we can see where you want us to go! Aren't our suggestions enough? Make your own suggestion, and let's see how many likes that gets!
    Thank you all for watching yet another video from St. Maarten. This time another old classic aircraft. The DC-9 is such a beautiful and unique aircraft. It is really sad that we see less and less DC-9's and MD-80's flying. They are among some of our favorite aircraft. Operating this flight is PAWA Dominicana Airlines, who are some of the last to operate the DC-9 commercially. We'd love to see more DC-9's!

    I noticed at second :44, you can hear them shut down the APU before turning onto the runway. Also, once upon a time, these DC9s were considered quiet compared to 707s and DC8s.

      and Caravelle! @@ Oh my God/ears!

    • @awuma
      @awuma Před 6 lety +13

      The Caravelle had pure jet engines. The DC-9 here has early low by-pass ratio turbofans. The early (1958/59) DC-8's and 707's had pure jets too. I flew on such a 707 both ways across the Atlantic; it was badly under-powered, taking up the entire runway at YVR to stagger off and then having to refuel at Goose Bay before arriving at Gatwick. And a year earlier I flew across the US in a 720, whose sound on board made a lasting impression. A few years later, I flew on an Air Canada Conway-powered DC-8, a very pleasant experience; it may have been the same plane which broke the sound barrier during testing.

    • @Dana_Danarosana
      @Dana_Danarosana Před 6 lety +5

      Yup... DC-9s & 727s were "quiet". I can remember being @ MSP when I was little. The terminal walls & windows would vibrate and rattle whenever a 707, 720, or DC-8 would take off! (God I miss those days!)

    The DC9's always amaze me with their steep takeoffs. During the 80's when they were everywhere, I lived 3 miles from Heathrow airport, and the SAS DC9's were frequently used, and alongside the airbus A310 they had some of the steepest takeoffs i saw. Unlike the endless 737's, they just had that rocket look that made them stand out.

      @@richardkallio3868 Sounds amazing, i wasn't born until 1975, so i missed out on the golden era of aviation. Here in the UK we had the Bac 1-11 and Fokker 100, similar in look to the DC9, both extremely loud. The Bac 1-11 was an animal, really wild and smokey, but it had no climb at all. Sounded like an angry Concorde flying over. which was equally as good for a plane obsessed kid like me.

      Even after hushkitting in the 70s, they were still the loudest planes out of LHR (Concorde excepted of course). Never worked out why they seemed louder than the Trident, which with 3 Speys (they didn’t use the booster 4th engine on longer runways) should’ve been 50% noisier. Must be in the nacelle design…?

    I absolutely LOVED it when, in the "old days"...they used to "run up" the engines before! the takeoff roll. -It was just so ... *thrilling* ... when the good ol' jets stood still, there at the very beginning of the runway -with all engines at *full throttle* ❗
    I suppose that this isn't really something that most people here
    have experienced. -But let me tell you... I was born in '68 -and my parents worked in the Icelandic. foreign service. -So I had quite an unusual upbringing ...living both here in Iceland 🇮🇸 - and in Norway 🇳🇴
    ...and of course I flew regularly between 🇮🇸 & 🇳🇴
    ...even alone ! It was a-mazing !
    -Well, I just wanted to share a tiny bit of my childhood *flying*-memories 😁

    I remember flying a Sud Aviation Caravelle from Copenhagen to Funchal around 1985.
    The layout was similar to the DC9 with engines at the rear fuselage. The noise in the pantry, where the toilet was placed, was absolutely deafening.
    Short after take off the aircraft went into a nearly 45° angle and stayed there until about 5.000 feet was reached.
    Landing at Funchal was some experience at that time. The runway was still only 1.800m long and ended in an around 20 meter drop to the cliffs and ocean below.
    After touch down and breaking, the Caravelle turned 180° to get to the apron. I'm sure that the wingtip reached outside the runway during this process.
    Returning home was interesting as well. This time we flew a 727 that wasn't able to load enough fuel to reach Copenhagen and still take off from a 1.800 meter runway.
    Thus, we flew the ~45km to the neighboring island of Porto Santo, - in a few minutes and in a height of approx. 500 feet. Even then, the Porto Santo airport had a much longer runway and, since it was part of the NATO emergency airports, it had a large fuel store.
    ...

      John,
      Interesting post. I am a pilot. The angle of climb was probably about 20 degrees. That would be near max on an airliner. I do understand your saying 45 though. The first time I was in a jet it sure seemed like about 45.... lol. If you want to read an interesting story, read about the 747 disaster in Tenneriffe, it was caused by back-taxiing and miscommunication. The Dutch 747's out of St. Marten used to do that short hop to another island for fuel to allow the flight back to Amsterdam.
      Thanks.

    • @serg2963
      @serg2963 Před 5 lety +3

      Any of the airplanes that had tail mounted engines, were marketed as quiet... meaning quiet inside the cabin, as the jet efflux/noise was well behind the cabin. If you've ever traveled on a 737-200, and sat behind the wing, you know exactly what I mean... 727s and DC9s were indeed whispering in comparison!

    Yes, they were loud, and they belched a lot of black smoke all the time; yet, they remain one of my favourite short- to medium- haul airliners of all time!
    I recall they did have a wonky cabin pressurization system, however. My ears used to pop very violently whenever I was on a DC-9 that climbed above 20,000 feet! Not so with more modern passenger aircraft. I wonder if that was because pressurization in these birds was under manual control by the flight crew.

    The length of the runway pretty much dictates an aircraft that is a world away from being overpowered, use all the runway it can. That goes along with the noise, Most of my flights takeoff's seem to find the aircraft slowly rolling down the taxiway so they reach the end of the runway in time to just power up and go. No need to spool up or touch the brakes. On this flight, the pilots spooled the engines to full takeoff power while standing on the brakes. Once the brakes are released it goes reaching takeoff speed as quickly as possible

    DC-9s a great short haul flyer. With good maint. and weather, that plane will fly for another 50 years.

    You guys should come to Anchorage.
    Where else are you going to see tons of 747s, DC-3s, DC-6s, DC-9s, Super Cubs, Beavers, and F-22s all sharing the same airspace? Way more character than yet another person taking videos of 737s...
