Hiking Alone In Death Valley (Looking for Abandoned Mines)

  • The property here at Cerro Gordo is about 400 acres and borders Death Valley. This week I decided to show you some more of the surrounding area by hiking out from the town to some remote abandoned mines that overlook Death Valley. I haven't been hiking in quite a while, so I over-packed, made some omissions in my packing, and had to make some tough decisions and realizations.

      Because trash used to be rare. We live in a disposable society. Everyone throws things away all the time. Back then people didn't throw out things that still worked. Trash has a whole different definition. A lot of these items were soiled or lost. And are now collectible because they were rare (creating low supply).
      Also we used to have trash and rubbish. Rubbish was usually burned. Only trash was thrown away. Now we throw it all away.

    Brent, I realize that this is a video from December of last year but I still have to add my two cents. First, had you taken that corrugated sheet metal and made two walls held in place with the rocks and THEN built your fire (or even two firepits) on either side of the fire, the metal would have heated up to some extent.
    Also, first thing you learn in camping; you don't unroll your sleeping bag until you are ready to go into it so that the creepy crawlies won't have a chance to get in there before you do. There is always the chance they will come in as you sleep, but that can always happen...
    Also, if you use a bedsheet inside your sleeping bag you will not only be much warmer but much more comfortable as nylon is not the most comfortable material next to the skin.
    Finally, you should have built your night bivvy in the first stone structure that you came across; it still had remains of walls which would have served as a windbreak and would have supported a roof made of the corrugated sheet metal...

      I've seen it in Castlevania and Tales Of Vesperia, probably in loads of other games too, Final Fantasy most likely, I haven't played any after 9 though so it was materia and junctioning then. Might have been in one of them as well, just I can't remember after 20 years, Tales Of Vesperia was more recent, twas definitely in that.
      Edit - Autocorrect spelled Vesperia as Versperia. Clearly not a Tales Of fan.

      Resources are diminishing, the climate is changing, polar ice caps are melting in front of our eyes, and we need to do everything we can to preserve the delicate ecology that human sustainability is hinging on. This starts with ending pollution and that means to put your trash where belongs so that it doesn't injure wildlife who might accidentally eat it, to prevent pollution of our dwindling fresh water sources, and reduce soil erosion and acidification.

    Despite the fact that you clearly made it back to edit and post the video, hearing you say "ooh, the ceiling collapsed" and then watching you go further into the mine just gave me the heebie jeebies. I only discovered your channel a few days ago and have been going back through your channel, so, hello!!

    I’ve been watching a bunch of mine explorations shows lately around the Nevada, Mojave and Death Valley areas lately. That blue rock (and I’m no expert) looks like the Azurite & Malachite that I’ve seen a lot of in these mines. Which from what I understand is an indication of copper. So that’s my guess as to what that rock is at 23:42. I look forward to to finding out exactly what it is and hope you find out later and tell us. Thanks, Brent.

    Blue rock is most likely azurite, Green would be Malachite , both an indicator of Copper

      Are there any practical uses for Malachite or Azurite? Or is it just neat to look at?

    • @operationjester3348
      @operationjester3348 Před 3 lety +16

      Both were used as pigment in the old days, but I think jewelry is their main use now.

      @@michaelmich00 Lapis lazuli is found mostly in the Middle East, countries such as northeast Afghanistan , Pakistan, also Italy, Mongolia. It is found in the US and Canada but is not common. Not saying it cannot be found, just not a common as Azurite. Yes both were used as a pigment, and also jewelry

    Brent! Dude! Heat up a rock in the fireplace and wrap in a shirt or something, let it cool for 15-20 minutes place in your sleeping bag! Keep you warm all night! I guarantee it! 😁🙌🏻 my dad was a Boy Scout leader and taught this to his scouts!

    • @nezzuno1
      @nezzuno1 Před 3 lety +1

      I did this once and the rock burned right through my shirt. It's safer and easier to just bring a ground pad that insolates from the cold ground.

    • @brooks9517
      @brooks9517 Před 3 lety

      @@nezzuno1 you have to move it away from the fire for awhile and I usually wrap it in a towel. I’ve used this method for 30 years!
