You know - Sometimes singers don't feel well - but are too professional to cancel and as we age - some days are better than others. The human voice is attached to a fallible human body.
Dame Gwyneth Jones was a great artist. Her Brunnhilde and her Elektra were marvelous. Listen to those performances, and ignore this hateful little posting.
Jones was one of the brightest & most energetic lights in opera in the last 3rd of the 20th century, she worked herself to a frazzle electrifying audiences everywhere with her intense artistic commitment and her generous soul. She gave it all she had, every single time. I adored her always. After her Bayreuth Brunnhilde in 76, which I heard the following November, I thought that if the Sun could sing, it would sound like Jones. I only wrote three fan letters to opera singers in my lifetime, one of them was to Dame Gwyneth.
it only shows that singers are human - it happens to everyone, no matter how great he is, and yes it happened also to Dame Jones - one of the most brilliant and great dramatic sopranos ever.
THe obvious is obvious enough. What should also be noted is how she clings to what she has done with dignity and without any indication to the audience that anything is less than ideal. She then attempts a rectification via a breath, which fails, but it is a model to other singers of "cool" and dealing with negative situations which can arise for all performers.
Not every evening is the one of a lifetime, but this sounds a lot more delicate than her voices lends itself to anyways...I wonder who though of her for this part in the first place?
I have heard a few other big names come a cropper at exactly this moment in this piece of music. So cut her some slack, we all have bad days. Gwyneth Jones was never vocally my favourite voice, but i cannot recall a more committed artist, especially in Wagner. Her performances as Brunhilde at Covent Garden and filmed at Bayreuth were indeed impressive.
I actually don’t dislike it. GJ is a huge voice, and I actually find it thrilling she can do that. Plus it gives it a kind of haunting vibe, which I don’t think is entirely inappropriate given the piece.
We should respect great Artists like Jones...She gave us always her best. A great Person and singer.

It ended up sounding haunting. I like it.

And so well done Arleen Auger

Arleen is so flustered, Gwyneth had her working overtime to find her starting pitch
First: this proves ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about her whole artistry and career, but the real human being she is.
I love Gwyneth,...but posting this ti is acctually funny😁
She knew she was in trouble or she wouldn’t have taken that big breath before the top note.

Holy shit!
What's with the straight tone on the high C?
Oh Signur 😱
The great Dame live had the most spectacular voice we've ever heard, but this is quite amusing. Thanks for posting this.
