- Today we will learn how to be a great rhythm guitar player by looking at these iconic rhythm guitar riffs from some great guitar players!!! Being a better rhythm guitar player means you will be a better lead guitar player also. Looking at strumming, muting, triads and hammer ons and pull offs of those triad shapes. Using triad shapes in our rhythm guitar playing will open a whole new world in our guitar journey!

My advice for any guitar player is to spend a month or two learning your favorite disco and funk songs and you will never struggle with difficult rhythms again
That’s one way to do it 😲
I used to take guitar lessons and chord books lead guitar books don’t really keep you motivated to keep practicing more.
Funk guitar and trash metal for a right hand workout and Jazz and Latin music for left hand. Should be able to play almost anything. Throw in some Hendrix and Van Halen too!
Using a metronome is a must and also learning to count what you’re playing.
And add some Reggae and SKA because that plays on the back beat and that can be quite tricky if you always played on the down beat
As guitarists we probably spend 75%-80% of our time playing so a lesson like this is so important but often overlooked. Thanks for this video it was a great lesson. Love the Doobie Bros.
Your comment is much appreciated Mike! Thanks for watching the lesson and have a great weekend 👍
I got hooked by the "Another brick in the wall" part 🙂. Time to practice now! Thanks Rusty, it's so easy to be boring at rythm guitar.
As a guitarist I must say I play more than 75-80% playing 😂
Embellished rhythm guitar is just the best, throw in some riffs every once in a while.
What a brilliant lesson. Been playing a lot of years & been in cover bands (as a rhythm guitarist) but have recently lost my love of playing...this lesson just reignited the fire....thankyou
I’m excited to hear that Paul! We all have our ups and downs with this instrument we have been blessed with. It sounds like we are both now in the excited stage of playing!!!😎 Let’s keep rocking and have a great rest of your weekend✌️
Just curious - why did you lose interest as a rhythm guitar player already probably playing songs similar as the ones demonstrated ?
Lukather said that he played more rhythm guitar than lead on a lot of records. I've played with so many guitarists who don't have a clue about how to play rhythm guitar. I can't count the times that I've had to revert back to rhythm because the rhythm guitar player couldn't pull it off when I'd start to play lead. Needless to say, I left those guys behind long ago😊
Well said! I am definitely going to do more rhythm lessons on my channel. Thanks a lot for checking out the video. Talk to you soon.👍
I’ve been playing guitar for a long time, & I already know everything in this lesson. BUT, I’m glad I found it. It’s so good to be reminded about things that make you a rock solid band member and ask yourself, “Am I still doing these things? Have I stopped doing things like this? If I have, why have I?”
Great lesson.
Agree
Thank you for the comment! I am the same way. If I don’t continually work on things, they kind of fade away. Thanks again and have a great week.👍
Wow, howwwww did I have "listen to the music" in my head as i read the title before i clicked the video
Crazy
Right on! It’s a classic! Thanks for checking out the video. Happy Sunday.🙏
This has to be the best rhythm guitar lesson ive seen on YT yet, BRAVO 👏!!
Thanks so much, Ron! I really do appreciate that! Talk to you soon buddy👍
Just getting back into playing after 20 years. Man how cool is it to have so many master players to learn from.
That’s exciting! Many great players to learn from for sure! Thanks so much for checking out the video and have a great weekend👍
Most great Rhythm players have great natural Rhythm unlike me who always struggled with it
Keep working at it my brother! Thanks a lot for checking out the lesson👍
I feel your pain. I got this book years ago by David Mead( I think) on rhythm and counting. Make sure you have something to slow stuff down. Look up tab with audio of any parts interesting rhythmically
It’s such an understated (and often under appreciated!) skill
I think that rhythm is just a feeling. When I first started, I never understood rhythm and never thought that I would get it. However, over time and as you listen and play music my hand started to follow the music as well. It's like when you sway you body or head to a song. I am not great at guitar but I feel it now.
It was hard for me as a beginner many decades ago, but a friend showed me a trick of practicing the right hand percussive strumming while just sitting around watching tv with the guitar unplugged. You don’t even have to be playing anything. Just mute the strings with your with your fretting hand and practice with the right hand. Learning to palm mute is very important also. Then work on left hand muting.
Wow!!! I am so happy I “stumbled” onto your channel. I can identify, seeing that I am a 69-year-old who picked up the guitar in my later years. You’ve given me renewed confidence. God bless. 🙏🏾
I’m glad you found my channel! Let’s work on this stuff together! Thanks for the message and have a great weekend ✌️
I’m getting my just due right NOW. My favorite guitar teacher lays out the rhythm for all my favorite songs and how to do it. This is what happens when you are in alignment with his plan. Oh yeah, thanks Rusty. You got caught up in my prayer of gratitude.
Hey Cathy, I really appreciate your message here! I had a lot of fun making this video. I’m happy that you liked it. Many thanks and enjoy your weekend.❤️
धन्यवाद सर ।
अलग भाषा का होते हुए भी आप का lesson बहुत अच्छे से समझ में आता है ।
❤❤
I’m happy to help! Thanks for checking out the lesson! Catch you later✌️
This is a great straightforward lesson. Perfect for a medium level player like me. Thanks much for sharing it.
I’m happy to hear that JW! We can always learn something from our favorite guitar players! Thanks a lot for checking out the lesson👍
Nice to see someone teaching rhythm. Been playing these songs for 30+ years. But it never hurts to get a refresher. Just to make sure I’m not getting to old. 😂😂
🤠🎸🎶🙏
You’re right! If I don’t keep playing and using these concepts, they start to fade away. Thanks a lot for checking out the video.👍
One of my biggest blind spots on guitar has been not learning other's songs/pieces, I really enjoy making my own stuff when the guitar is in my hands. I could learn so much, I know, and it's dumb not to check other's work, ...so I really appreciate the breakdown of several tunes in one video. And the incomparable humble style. Another great one Rusty! Thank you for it.
Thanks for checking in! Lots of great ideas here for improvising and original music. Good to hear from you. Happy Sunday 🙏
Great lesson Rusty! Keep coming back with more like this. Much appreciated man. Thank you.
Cool! I’m glad you liked it. CC! Thanks for taking the time to watch my videos! Have a great weekend.👍
Another great lesson Rusty, more rhythm lessons please
I thank you for that! Definitely some more rhythm stuff coming up! 👍
The world is full of lead guitarists, but the rhythm is the thing.
- J. Hendrix
Good one! Well said! Thanks for watching the video✌️
I would say this is the best tutorial I have ever seen, I've been around for a while so it's a huge compliment.
I appreciate the kind message Paul means a lot! Thank you my brother. Keep rockin 😎
That Listen to the Music riff is a lot more involved than I ever thought. Great lesson!
Thank you for checking out the lesson! I appreciate it! Happy Sunday🙏
Nice lesson Rusty
I appreciate that Matt! Thank you for watching👍
this one escaped me at the time of upload. Rusty you are the best !!! Others are just trying to sell their courses, and make videos to promote them selfs. You really give out simple free lessons that are understandable, and of so much value to us. A big thx from Spain. Te deseo larga vida compañero !!!!
Greetings from Chicago!!! Thank you for checking out the rhythm lesson. I’m always happy to help! Talk to you later 👍
Hooray for Triads! Thanks Rusty. Sitting around just working on triads is one thing, but this was much better.
Yes! We need to put them into action! Thanks a lot for checking out the video and have a great rest of your week👍
Right, that's it! I just threw away my guitar ...
Please don’t! Grab it out of the garbage now.😂
Cowboy up son
It’s mostly just rhythm, triad shapes and hammer ons. Triads are just a chord missing a few notes
@@ganglestankall triads are chords as well, but not all chords are triads
F👂@@rustysguitar1
Hi Rusty! I am learning that my ring finger is my weak link for hammer ons but I am getting better. Love those bar cords.
Hey LP, keep working with that ring finger because that’s the most common way players hammer on and pull off. Good to hear from you! Have a great weekend❤️
Keep up the great job. You will be proud of yourself and surprised that you’re improving. Do your best. Thx Rusty. You make it look so easy.❤
Rusty Thank you so much for all your lessons..... one of the best guitar teachers on YT no doubt in my mind...
You’re welcome CD! This is some great feedback! There’s a lot of great teachers, so that means a lot. Have a great weekend.👍
You’re the real deal Rusty. Your delivery, technique pointers, and excellent graphics are the best on YT. I especially appreciate the graphics indicating the name of the chord and finger placement - it helps me better understand the fretboard AND I can see exactly what the fingering is. Given hand sizes & quirky ways guitarists can finger chords, etc. it can be challenging to see how other teachers are playing the chords - your graphics make it a breeze. Keep up the excellence, Rusty, you are making a profound impact on a whole generation of guitarists (and beyond)!
@@jamesahassett Thank you James 👍
I'm loving this! I played guitar for about 15 years and then just stopped for the last 12 years. I'm now getting back into it and enjoying your videos, I wish you were my teacher!!
Thanks for the nice lessons!
I’m glad you’re playing again! I am your teacher. Just CZcams only. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask! Thanks so much for taking the time to watch my lessons.👍
Having gotten something out of this is an understatement Rusty. I got a ton out of this. Mostly how to connect (match) the scale shape to the current chord shape. Keep up the great work educating us on real guitar playing. Love the Gilmour stuff, always have ever since I was 17 and wasn’t yet playing. I loved those chord tones and triads. You and I play rhythm alike.
I’m really glad to hear that! It’s exciting making new connections on the fretboard! Thanks so much for all your support and I hope you have a great week ahead🙏
Giving away some gold - especially some of the extra moves ! I had my masters who sat me down like this 40 years ago - and it’s amazing how much it’s been used in many different applications ! Keep teaching man!!! 🖖🏼✊🏼
There is some gold in them, hills!😂 I appreciate the kind words! Thanks for checking out the video. Talk to you soon.👍
WOWWW Rusty! I really loved this lesson! This kind of lesson lets us improve as rhythming guitar players, sounding much more real and grooving. What lucky we are to have you as our teacher! Keep on rockin bro!
Thanks my friend! I had a blast making this lesson! So I’m glad you had fun with it! And I really do appreciate all your support Rafa! Have a great weekend buddy👍
This came up as a suggestion, so I clicked on it. Couldn't quit watching and listening....at work!
Cool! These are some classic tunes that are very fun to play! I really do appreciate the comment. I hope the rest of your workday is good. Talk to you soon buddy.👍
Glad I found your channel. Love the bible sitting on the stand behind you. Great lesson, looking forward to exploring your channel vid's.
I’m really glad you found my channel also! I read the Bible every morning in my studio! I really appreciate your support. Let me know if you have any questions. Thanks buddy HB✌️
Wow! So much in such a short lesson. ! Great demonstration of the different rhythms. I haven't managed to master any of them yet, but will persevere. This could do with 3 separate lessons. Thanks so much.
You’re totally right! This is a lot of info in one lesson. Just trying to get players to get that hammer on and pull off movement with the rhythm. I really do appreciate your comment and thanks so much for checking out the video Pete.👍
Love the sound you get, i have no ambition for getting there as i don't care to play through an amp. Rhythm on the other hand is my ultimate major goal. I would be completely satisfied if I got to be a solid rhythm player. Thank you for everything you do for the community of guitar players! BEST AND PEACE
Hey Chuck, rockin some rhythm is the way to go! Very easily I appreciate comment and I hope you enjoy your weekend! Thanks bro 😎
Great lesson. Someting like this is much more valuable than most usless solo stuff. Thanks.
Thanks man! I’m glad you got something from the lesson! Have a great rest of your week👍
Thanks Rusty. Great lesson. A great step up from playing static chords. More please. Steve
You’re welcome Steve! We can all learn a lot from these classic rock rhythms. Definitely more on this topic. Talk to you soon.✌️
Man that tone is beautiful.
I’m glad you like it! Thanks so much for watching the video👍
Excellent video Rusty. I have my weekend planned out now, Thanks a lot very helpful.
Thank you Martyn! I’m always happy to help! Have a rockin weekend✌️
Just found you on here Rusty! Exactly what I was looking for- timing, strumming and just solid rhythm. Your playing here is great and that tone is lovely! Thank you! I’m now subscribed!
Cool 😎 I’m glad you found the channel! Thanks a lot for subscribing! I appreciate you leaving this great comment 👍
It took years for me to understand that the bass and rhythm are so important to a song as a whole and to the sound of the lead. A solo is a flourish, rhythm is the song!
Yes! So so important! Thanks so much for checking out the video👍
Gotta work that G MAG 7 in The Thrill Is Gone into muscle memory but another great lesson. Thank you Rusty.
It is a cool chord! It adds a nice vibe to the blues! I appreciate the comment and have a great weekend👍
Rusty, Thank you so very much, I have learned more from you in the last year since I retired than the last 20 years. But I have so much more time to enjoy my passion and play for an hour everyday and that really make a difference. But I just love your style of making it simple and everything I take from your videos and apply always opens the door for so much more. Your a true Blessing to me, my Friend. Take care and God Bless
You’re welcome! I just retired last year and I enjoy playing guitar more than ever. Just trying to learn something new every day and it sounds like you are also. Thanks for taking the time to watch my lessons. Blessings to you also my brother 🙏
A real treat to have this pop into my feed. Thanks for the groove Rusty 👌
Nice! I’m glad to hear that. Thanks I really appreciate the comment.👍
Thanks Rusty, this is a great reminder of how important it is to have a solid rhythm guitar basis. Excellent!
You’re welcome, Alan! Rhythm Guitar as you said is so important. Good to hear from you my friend. Thanks.👍

Thank you Karen! You are totally right! Enjoy the rest of your weekend ❤️

great lesson, also enjoy your worship channel. Keep it coming and thanks.
Thanks so much! I appreciate all your support Jim! Enjoy your weekend bud 👍
I saw this comment and searched for the worship channel to no avail, what’s the key words search pray tell. Lol Rustys worship “that was easy…” btw i like the maple neck, i have an ESP EC-10, as a fretboard beginner (long time chord guy) i sometimes loose my place on the dark simulated rosewood. I found a clone TELE with a maple fretboard trying to pin down the seller to a meet date…im new to your channels but after reading the comments, am looking forward to looking through your vids. Later
@@MikeSheasheaDtree Good to see you here, Mike! I hope you will find the lessons useful! And I will also look forward to seeing you on my worship guitar channel. Let’s work on some of the stuff together! Talk to you later buddy.🙏

Good lesson! Nice clear visual explanations.
I’m glad you liked the lesson! Thanks for watching and happy Sunday to you🙏
I can go away from my computer for hours Rusty only to return sometimes with a dozen notifications of new episodes or lessons from various YT sites. One guess which one I always open first!! Always consistently great and varied on Rusty's Guitar! Again, either by accident or on purpose........I love the format of delivering us the new backing track to your soloing lessons that allow us to interpret our very own solos first........even a solid day ahead of your completed solo lesson. This gives us ample time to get creative and improvise then compare your own nice interpretation and add/subtract but really retain the musical information so much better. At least this works for me but I hope others agree as well! Your Texas friend, Jim C.
Thanks so much Jim! I appreciate you taking the time to watch my videos!!! And I really do appreciate all your feedback JC! I hope you have a ROCKIN WEEKEND BRO 😎
Thanks Jim ✌️
