Fun fact, that audio clip of her speaking was actually real. When she was going through that break up with that guy, she needed to vent and just cry it out and she decided to record the whole entire conversation she had with the people around her and it was like about 1hr or longer, and she decided to use some small parts for the video! I love that she did that because it really emphasizes her pain and what she felt in that moment. Especially because her relationship with him was so toxic and it went on for 6 years+, they dated from like 2011/2012-2014 and they were on and off up until 2018 I believe and that’s when Justin and her broke up the final time and then he got engaged like 5 months after their final break up.

The two months references to the two months he spent being in haileys life again and them rekindling their relationship after him and Selena broke up. But if you do your research you’ll see that him and hailey got engaged 5 months after him and Selena broke up.

Yeah it sucks but when your in that type of toxic relationship it’s like you really can’t realize all the messed up shit.
I had an ex that I honestly thought I loved but he always did some fucked up shit that it was never okay to forgive but I always did and when I was close to opening my eyes he would play with my mind and make me feel guilty and just made me feel like I deserved all the pain. I’m good now & it’s been four years since then.

I think this song is a great depiction of how many people, especially young women can lose themselves when they are in some of their first or most serious relationships; despite knowing that it is unhealthy and damaging to do so.
So much of surrendering yourself and your freedom in order to stay and to make the choice to be in a relationship actually ends up being harmful and detrimental in the long run. Yet we still do it; even when we logically know that it isn't healthy to care and fall that much for another person.
We know better, but we do it anyways; fully acknowledging that staying in the relationship is the equivalent of watching a car crash occur in slow motion. We know that it is tragic and horrific and ultimately ruinous, but we just can't tear our eyes away from watching that disaster happen.
In the song Selena is admitting that what she is doing is not healthy, sane or perhaps even right. It is clearly not in her best interest, but she is choosing to do it anyways; even though it will cause her pain and anguish and will likely bring her down in the end. She acknowledges her weakness, but feels compelled and powerless to stop herself. She is willing and choosing to be a martyr for this love.
It is not healthy to give up this much of yourself to someone. where you lose yourself entirely in that other person. Hopefully in time, and after getting through the devastation of the ending and loss of that relationship, people learn they need to hold back and keep some part of themselves in an act of self preservation; In order to not be lost completely again, Blame Disney and fairy tales for influencing society and telling young girls that this is what they have to do in order to truly be in love.
