She's called Asia's Vocal Supreme. She can hold notes for seconds while belting, she's one of the Queens of riffs and runs and she can whistle while doing riffs and runs. Katrina is self taught and self trained as virtually all our soloists are. Only classical and theater singers, choirs, and now the young pop groups assembled by labels and talent companies undergo training sessions. We train ourselves by listening to the greats, mimicking them, then experimenting, and singing every chance we get-at school, at home, in the bathroom, at the corner store and mall, at parties, in videoke and karaoke bars, beer gardens, in church, and for those with dreams of performing professionally, joining contest after contest after contest. Every neighborhood (barangay), municipality, town, city, and province holds singing contests. Then of course, the television talent shows. Singers like Mori and Katrina did the rounds of local and national contests. They become the breadwinners of the family as one or both parents devote their time to manage their children’s careers.
Kat had much less than Mori to start with. We were all extremely happy for her when she began collaborating with and later married American drummer, percussionist and music producer Mike Shapiro, who would arrange and produce Kat’s recordings. (He recorded and toured with greats like Sergio Mendes, Natalie Cole and Al Jarreau.) She does the vocal arrangements of her backup vocals and her collabs with other singers (BuDaKhel). She sound engineers her vocals! Mike and Kat were great together!
But Shapiro died in 2021 a few months after their wedding and Kat disappeared for awhile to grieve.
We are so so happy for her that she has come back and been producing for herself. She deserves the best the world has to offer because she has worked so hard and lost much and now helps young artists by collaborating with them! Do please support her. She has amazing content and does not disappoint.

That video is what solidified the Wish Bus as a global platform. Relatively speaking, Katrina was an unknown before this and both Wish and Katrina's popularity sky rocketed and the pinoy rabbit hole journey approximately started with reactors across the globe. There's a lot of performances in the wish bus that contributed to this and can't wait for your take on those .

So glad you finally reacted to Katrina Velarde ❤ She is one of my favorite power vocalists. She has a latest song, a cover of the song Araw Gabi. Also do try to see her collaborations with the group Budakhel (BUgoy Drilon, DAryl Ong, MiCHAEL Pangilinan) all excellent soloists in their own right. You will enjoy it as well. I loved their rendition with Katrina V of the song One Sweet Day. Katrina V used to be married to an American music producer too, unfortunately he died 6 months after they married. But Katina Velarde has long been in the music scene, going into many competitions so her voice has been honed well and continues to be fantastic.

A lot of singers here in the Philippines starts early as 7 yrs old and didn't even undergo voice lessons or voice trainings. It's purely in our culture that we love to sing and dance despite of challenges in life and that is our stress reliever.. To SING and DANCE.
The first time I saw this performance my jaw dropped. 6 years had past since then, I'm still in awe and cannot believe she held that note longer than my past relationships.

Another Wish Bus performance is one by her former mentor, Gary Valenciano, who does a cover of Chick Corea's "Spain". Gary has been a fixture in the Philippine entertainment scene for years, and was a judge on a singing competition that Katrina had entered as part of a group. After the contest, he gave her a job as a backup singer. Some other Katrina suggestions : "One Sweet Day" with her and a sometimes trio of male artists called BuDaKhel, "Reflection", One take cover sessions : "Mamma Knows Best", Katrina and Sam Mangubat - "I Turn To You", Katrina and Jessica Villarubin - "I Surrender", and the best of her musical impersonations "Impersonating Singers 3 (Burn)".
Kat is good on RIFFS and RUNS, LONG BELTING w/o straining of the voice and even doing on LOW KEYS!

Morisette and Katrina both idolizes Ms. Regine Velasquez, our Asias Songbird, the diva of all the divas in the Philippines. One of her greatest performances is her live rendition on one of her musical influences, Barbara Streisand's "Papa, can you hear me". Btw, Ms. Regine had a live cover of " Go the Distance" as well. She is great, you should also see her newer stuff, produced very well to her voice. The wish bus camera is facing the control room, as they used to years back. So much good talent on the bus. They will also have foreign artists I remember Dua Lipa. Also have seen a CZcamsr fan invented by the artist singing to sit in that control room, of course pre-Covid days, don’t remember who they were though. Maybe you can get to see the wish bus while you’re there.

Think about the fact that just four years ago, when she was already pretty well known due to this video and other performances, you could still hear her, several times a year at the Music Hall -- a small pub concert venue -- where they only charged you 4 bucks to hear her and you bought a beer or two. I was visiting the city in 2019 and listening to her live in two back to back one hour singing sessions one evening was a memorable experience. Especially since I was sitting no more than 15-20 feet from the stage. It was so obvious to me she was levels above many of the other fine singers I heard in those few weeks in the Philippines.

Absolutely! Regine Velasquez is THE OG-the inspiration for Morissette, Katrina, and many many of our singers today. Since you (GKD) listened to Morissette ‘s version of SHINE on the wish bus, listen to Regine who sang SHINE at home during the height of the pandemic as a tribute to healthcare workers. Not sure whether Regine is the original singer of SHINE, but hers is certainly the version that we have loved for decades.

This isn't bad but tbh, this doesn't represent Katrina Velarde's skill level. This to me only showcases her range. The riffs and runs on this girl is phenomenal. The control is impeccable. Not to mention the fact that she does spot-on impersonations and can belt out Tori Kelly's "Don't you worry 'bout a thing" while baby-sitting. Anyway, glad you guys found this gal.

Ahhh Katrina… I believe this was my very first wish bus video I watched yearsssss ago. It was a rabbit hole with her, Morisette, and KZ Tandingan. They really opened me up in terms of going back and listening to OPM music again… growing up in the States, I remember just very few artists but I’m super glad I discovered those amazing ladies ❤ now I appreciate so much of OPM music and very proud of many artists like SB19 and Moira just to name a few, that are very well recognized internationally.
