For Splashmon specifically im 99% confident that theres somekind of connection there, like maybe in the really early days of Frontiers planning the water spirit was originally meant to be male and Splashman and his darkness mode were made as like little concept art sketches that then years later wwhen they were making the death generals someone found or remembered them and here we are now.

Personally, I just like your idea of the Warrior Ten being kept in mind for an elemental system, like here are the Digimon of the ancient past created by the world that represent the elements and function as the ancestral template to later Digimon, so an elemental themed group, like the Big Death Stars, would of course have similarities. Also, could just assume they might share "ancestors."
I always thought it would be interesting in none of the frontiers spirits were "evil" it's purely based of the human wielder and the death generals were the actual evil counter part of the spirits
Isn’t that canon? They were only evil because either the Digimon that used the Spirits were evil or Cherubimon corrupted the Spirits.
@@pn2294 If I remember right it was that Cherubimon had to corrupt the Dark spirits since being of that element gave a resistance to his influence, corruption also causing them to require a human host.
Do I think it was intentional? No. Does it seem fun? Yes. Also, Apollomon feels like a Spirit of Fire and Spirit of Light fusion.

"Thundersnow" is actually a meteorological phenomenon. It's basically a thunderstorm where snow falls instead of rain. So it wouldn't be far fetched in Digimon.
Gravimon could work for spirit of wind, thin and the hair looks like a tornado and even though it’s technically falling with style being pulled by gravity could look like your flying

I am sure the Death Generals were based on the days of the week. The kanji for the days:
Monday is Moon
Tuesday is FIre
Wednesday is Water
Thursday is Wood
Friday is Gold
Saturday is Earth
Sunday is Sun
but they def work for spirits tho
Oh for sure they have multiple creation points but I think the Frontier stuff just lines up really well
Reason it works with the spirits is because they days of the week are named after the 5 chinese elements, which are also folded into the elements of the 10 Legendary Warriors, as well as the moon and the sun.
Speaking of Frontier related theories, have you ever heard the one about how Bolgmon/MetalKabuterimon and RhinoKabuterimon were swapped with each other in-development at one point?
I forgot where I heard it, but its lived rent free in my head ever since and I can't unsee it. Really, think about it. Go look at the two Digimon and entirely forget which one is supposed to be the Beast Spirit and which one is the proposed Human/Beast Spirit Fusion.
Just got an idea for a future vid. What if the Spirits DNA digivolved. Like after the core group obtain the corrupted spirits they all gain the ability to DNA digivolve with them. Like Kazemon with Ranamon for example.
That sounds awesome.
That works pretty well with Kumamon and Arbormon having/being tech while their beasts are the most "just elemental animals" of the group.
I feel like this is such a missed opportuny. The spirits already had some fusions, be it Aldamon fusing the two spirits of fire or KaiserGreymon being a fusion of a lot of different spirits. There could be so much more combinations but in the end only the 'leaders' of the group really got to explore this in any way.

Gravitymon could be the opposite of the Wind Spirit. It's design is very whimsical like air.
Off topic but due to conversations in your discord I am LOVING Dorbickmon as a dark mega for Guilmon.
It’s also a nice middle point between the humanoid Gallantmon and the very animalistic Megidramon, sort of like a double spirit
I’ve always wondered what would’ve happened if they spirit evolved into the second spirits that they captured. Like Tommy spirit evolved using the wood spirit or did a fusion spirit evolution with it.
The reason why the elements work so well together, is because Death Generals and the Evil Legendary warriors their get their elements from wuxing.
Fire
Water
Earth
Wood
Steel (metal)
In frontier fire was substituted for Darkness because evil, and because of another funny grouping of the spirits that Ophanimon had, were Fire Ice Lightning, that are popular RPG elements.
Moon and Sun were added because they represent ying and yang, which are often associated with the five elements.
Digimon loves to make groups that could be against each other.
So while i don't think they made in purpose as an counter part but someone Saw the conections and the more people like those conections the most probable they will make them fight on some point
I might be the only one but I would love to see a custom art video of YOUR ideal digimon partner line that incorporates your favorite things like favorite animal, color, themes etc
Okay, hear me out: Splashmon (water) ruled over Cyber land and that's connection with spirits of metal, tying water and metal together like it was shown in Frontier (Ranamon and Mercurymon).
Olegmon could work for ice and metal as we saw in Vikemon's episode in Reboot.
Zamielmon alongside wood could incorporate wind, too. It is said that Zamielmon has dominion over fairy digimon and Fairymon is fairy.
NeoVamdemon could be used for darkness and for the light, too. His element is Moon and Kouji is heavily associated with Moon and moonlight.
Dorbickmon is for fire, Gravimon for earth.
For thuinder, it's a bit stretch, but I would nominate Olegmon because he made Ballistamon, who is very bug-like digimon and his evolution Atlur Ballistamon has Plasma Crack which is powerful thunder attack.

I don’t know if this is a theory that’s being covered but I’ve always had a theory that Oridinemon is the fallen angel version of Mastemon like how Black Seraphimon and Ophanimon Fallen Down mode are fallen angel forms of Seraphimon and Ophanimon respectively.
Another group the death generals has connections to are the Olympus 12, seeing as Apollomon is in both groups and that Gravymon and Neomyotismon represent the moon and arguably the earth just like the Olympus 12 represent celestial bodies
Liollmon to Leomon, then Leomon to Flaremon, and Flaremon to BanchoLeomon. I really like that possible digivolution line. Another for me would be Loogamon, next Dorulumon, then JaegerDorulumon, and finally CresGarurumon.
Maybe if we extend the "Death Generals fuse two Spirits"...
NeoVamdemon = Darkness + Steel
Dobrickmon = Fire + Thunder
Splashmon = Water + Wind

I admit I do have a couple of theories related to the Leomon line, specifically I kind of think that Regulumon could be a Beast-Angel digimon in the vein of Cherubimon but ranked beneath the three Seraph Digimon especially since Leo served Lord Holy Angemon who was a Seraphimon. I admit I'd love to see more Angelic and Demonic Digimon get expanded on and just see more of them. Like with getting Luxmon a kind of angel counterpart to Impmon.
We do need more angels (and Digimon from other archetypes tbh). The vital bracelet dim cards were generous enough to introduce two (and reintroduce Dominimon) but since we were denied a full roster Angel Digimon-themed dim card, 2+1 angels are not enough.

Lately I've been working with a game Dev team on a monster tamer and its made something about this video click with me: combined ideas can be drastically scrapped or changed before release.
Its very possible you're right. They wanted to homage the spirits decided to lower the number and tried fusing concepts, but as they went they weeded out certain elements and reinforced others.
Wind and thunder can lead one to think of gravity, but as that design goes you may lose thunder elements and focus more on gravity but maintain some of the wind concepts.
Maybe as you combine Ice and steel you get proto olegmon but over time you adjust the animal and realize you have other inspiration pivoting it to focus on a new element.
This process can be applied to every example to kinda see how iteration distances from the first concept.
I love digimon fusions it was my favorite show so I'm glad that your talking about this theory it really interesting
One thing worth noting about Olegmon & Daipenmon having the blue & red weapons is that it also matches with Goddramon/Goldramon's armguards. Olegmon to me looks like a fusion of Daipenmon, Blizzarmon/Korikakumon, and Goddramon/Goldramon, which is where it would get the golden element. Also, Olegmon's Jörmungandr & Surtr resemble Goddramon/Goldramon's Amon & Umon. It could be that Olegmon was originally conceptualized as a digixros involving Blizzarmon/Krikakumon & Goddramon/Goldramon, among other digimon.
I love this theory, just looking at other franchise these definitely could be Digimon that were being made alongside the spirit Digimon but didn't feel complete back then so they came back to them and we got them in xros wars

Olegmon having similarities to the Ice spirit is interesting when you consider the similarities to Gold and Ice.
Both are substances which can be somewhat strong in their solid state, but will melt easily under high heat.
Would be fun to hear the wildest evolutions from the dimcards

I got an interesting idea when you mentioned Zoe and Tommy getting the spirits of water and wood alongside their own. A cool custom art idea for the future could be exploring if the frontier kids used two elements to evolve, like your double armor idea. Zoe getting a wind and water form, Tommy an ice and wood form, etc.

For gravimon I argue he almost works with your theory being a strange combination of the thunder and wind spirits using it to make his own artificial gravity and attacking mostly from the sky
im definitely on the side of the death generals being unused concept art of villains for Frontiers, especially olegmon having been meant to fit into the chakmon line somehow, it feels so weird and random for it to be capped off with a silly digimon like daipenmon, it definitely feels like they wre going to give him a super viking digimon but felt like olegmon didn't fit at the last minute and saved the design for something else

My takes are
Blastmon for Earth (very similar physique and such to Grumblemon Gigasmon and Ancient Volcamon)
Ceresmon for Wood (I think you already made the connections in another video)
Shakamon for Steel (Large metallic spheres, the gold coloring, unconventional attacks, probably equal to AncientWisemon in terms of knowledge)
And nothing really would match Ranamon that isn't Ancient mermaidmon.

“Thundersnow” reminds me of the Toa Inika from Bionicle. Their elemental powers were fused with lightning. More specifically I’m reminded of the Ice Toa Matoro 🙂.
I have a video idea, you remember how in the 2020 reboot gatomon was turned into skullknightmon, devimon was the dark side of angemon and metalgreymon was about to be turned into machinedramon, what if the other digidestinied have a dark counterpart

Apollomon looks more like a possible Digivolution of Aldamon to me. Something about the pose and the colors just makes me think that.
Super interesting idea! I actually was coming up with evolution lines lately and Arbormon -> Zamielmon was one of the steps I had.

Oh we're going at all of them beyond Splashmon (by appearance) being male water warrior. Unfortunately that we have 2 missing elements but Olegmon the viking building off the Ice spirits and Gravimon being a physical contrast to the earth spirits (let's ignore Ancient Volcanomon's presence in the season) and swapping light and dark's presumed counterparts with Axe Knightmon being Metal element works very well. If we change this to give each general 2 elements I can at least see Zamielmon being the Wind/Wood General.
The Death Generals are the planets/days of the week. Aside from the sun and moon, each is associated with an element (eg. Mars = Fire). The similarities may just be coincidence, but since the first time I'd heard of this possibility I've loved it.
Dorbickmon I see more as a BetelGammamon mega option (red, fire dragon, three horns), which lines up with Gammamon being a Virus (though Betel's Vaccine iirc). Could easily see him fitting as a corrupted fire spirit mega though, as you said
your point about splashmon maybe being liquid metal does have a little extra merit in that splashmon commands a cyborg army in xros wars

IDK if they already exist or not (or if Karn has already made a video about it) but I had an idea of what would the Unified Spirit evolutions look like/be if characters like Zoey,Tommy, J.p, Koichi, or even the evil spirits were the base of the evolution. Instead of putting everything into fire and light, they were put into Ice and darkness, etc.
personally I think gravimon works fantastically as a wind spirit evolution. visually he is very thin and whispy, in animation his hair seems to flow like the wind, and his gravity powers operate very similarly to how a lot of other media treats the manipulation of wind
I was gonna chime in with my usual response of "oh they're just referencing the kanji in the days of the week in Japanese" but actually you might be onto something here!!

The Death Generals definitely had sometime type of reference, and Splashmon probably has some connection to Hanamon. I think is a reference since in the tamers manga is show the fist digimon the team monster maker saw was greymon like the ova of adventure.
Most likely it was unintentional but they eventually realized they unintentionally made the connection and decided to go with it

8:19 burninggreymon,KendoGarurumon,MetalKabutarimon and Korikakumon work too(and people said there wrong names for them but it fit the calling back to adventure)
Korikakumon is a combination of Kōri, the Japanese word for ice and Kaku, the on'yomi reading of tsuno, the Japanese word for horn.
Since Splashmon was the ruler of Cyber Land and commands Digimon like Andromon and MetalTyranomon, I would say the lightning spirits should go with him, despite Splashmon himself not having any bug-like or lightning-based elements.
Olegmon, as you said, looks like a mix of steel and ice, since he is themed after a viking and carries two one-handed axes which are colored blue and red.
As for the wind spirits, I think they could go to Gravimon, as he does rule over a bunch of Digimon with feathered wings, such as Anubimon, Crossmon, Hippogriffonmon and Thunderbirdmon. Even his own Darkness Mode has multiple wings.
I love Digimon Fronties! It's an underrated series.
I have a weird theory that Digimon Data Squad/Savers was supposed to be a tamers remake of sorts after the backlash of Digimon Frontier the craters looked back to what worked well and blended adventure and tamers together to create a high rating cartoon to bring in the money, that's why we see Tai(Marcus) and an Agumon but with the feral behavior of Guilmon and Matt(Thomas) returns but with Izzy's smarts and with a Gaomon a Gabumon like Digimon and then we have Sora/Mimi(Yoshino) and Lalamon standing in for Palmon but with flying capabilities like Biyomon, and not only that Ai and Mako also get revamped with Kristy and Kanaan and Impmon gets put in the can just to be replaced with two birds Biyomon and Falcomon 2006 which have some similarities with that redeemed imp but the most evidence I have lays with Samson who point blank is Yamaki with a partner Digimon; If anyone else agrees or disagrees please put your evidence or your counter points in a reply thank you.
I think the idea of the Death Generals being inspired by the Frontier Spirits is an interesting theory also recently I have come to see Apollomon has a big of a resemblance of Angunimon also Sun goes along with Fire and thinking back to your Full Digitalutions lines for the Legendarys warriors Spirits Apollomon could be a Mega For Agunimon going from Alsamon while Burning Greymon could digivolve to either Emperor Greymon or AncientGreymon also Apollomon’s Line does have data from the Dragons Roar Family giving them connection to AncientGreymon.
I wonder if possibly they might be more related to the "sequel" or the Digimon Force three. Possibly combinations of two or three spirits creating the Death Generals. Which would make sense why in Xros theyd come back.
It's also possible that, somewhat similar to the alternative armor digivolutions, at a time during the creation of Frontier it was imagined as different people having different digimon forms when using the spirits, but it never got past this initial idea and some sketches
Fast-forward to Xros and they decided to turn those sketches into digimon unrelated to Frontier, while keeping the obvious visual connections
Also, Gravimon looks (visually speaking) quite good with the wind spirits and given his gangly floaty arms, it is possible the design wasn't always associated with gravity, it is also the most robotic looking one, so if these were meant to be fusions, maybe he's the fusion of thunder and light
To be honest, before Tri, my concept of the Digimon anime timeline was Frontier -> Adventure -> 02 -> Tamers
My thinking is that the Death Generals could have been the in between from the Frontier Spirits to the OG Adventure story:
The concept of a good and bad side to the Spirits of Darkness is shown in Apollomon and NeoVamdemon. The good side of the Spirits of Darkness takes the form of a Lion, which is pretty much the basis of Apollomon's line, while the evil side of the Spirits of Darkness becomes NeoVamdemon. Note that it was Vamdemon chosen as the base, not Devimon (which eventually got an upgrade in DoneDevimon in the 2020 reboot). My headcanon is that the corrupted NeoVamdemon tried to rule over the world, but got stopped by the other Death Generals and dedigivolved into the Vamdemon we see in Adventures. Apollomon's sense of justice passed on downwards to the Leomon line, which would carry on the tradition of dying a heroic death (incl. V Tamers) in Adventures and Tamers.
Dorbickmon's fiery and draconic nature sees it as the precursor to Tai's Agumon. Splashmon, while being the representation of Water, would actually lead into Gabumon's line. Matt and Splashmon both have an ugly side that they refuse to let others see: Matt's refusal to let people see him cry VS the grotesque form of Splashmon Darkness Mode. Interestingly, both Splashmon Darkness Mode and Garurumon sharing the iconic white base with blue stripes. The Spirits of Light and Water are paired in the same DIM card that Splashmon can be obtained in, making it easier to explain the transition.
Zamielmon is obtainable in Zoe's DIM Card, which represents both her Spirits of Wind, but also the Plant element. Zoe is the only female member of the Frontier protagonists. Now, before the introduction of the eighth child, what are the two elements that the only female Adventure protagonists represent? Meanwhile, despite being the representation of the Metal Element, Olegmon's aquatic thematic motif puts him as a clear precursor to Joe's Gomamon
Lastly, Gravimon's status as the master tactician puts him as the thematic predecessor to Izzy, who basically shares the same role in the Adventures canon. While the concept of Gravity doesn't correspond to Tentomon's line directly, note that there is a unique element to AtlurKabuterimon. The original version (blue), is stated to have its flight capabilities regressed. However, the anime gave Izzy a Red AtlurKabuterimon, whose main selling point is its better flight capabilities. In other words, a hero (AtlurKabuterimon) was able to break free from the hold of gravity (Gravimon)
olegmon is with korikkakumon line because is categorized as a sea mammal
Id love to see fusions between two different element spirits like ice and earth human spirits or one human spirit and one beast spirit
Trivia: I had no idea it was called Spirit of Steel because in the brazilian dub it was always the Spirit of Metal.
The only thing keeping me from 100% from associating Splashmon with the Warriors of Water is that in lore, Splashmon seems more associated with the Metal Empire than the Deep Savers.
the moon and the sun being elements make sense from another perspective. they might be based on the 7 grand elements of chinese myth, were the sun and moon are both elements (and stand for the weekdays of Saturday and sunday respectivelly), and, well, the other members of the generals are basically using the remaining 5 element positions in that version.
Maybe it's just me, but I can see some resemblenece bewtween Apollomon Whispered Mode and Susanoomon as well. Not sure what it would mean for the theory but might at least hint they had Frontier Spirits on the brain whilst designing Whispered Mode, not sure if it was a new mode created for Xros Wars or if it already existed though.
Great theory, if nothing else I'd believe they were making an homage/call back to Frontier, but might've felt 10 Generals would be a few too many so cut it down to 7 for a more manageable number

My favorite death generals are Olegmon (my favorite golden gold thief viking captain pirate boi) and Splashmon (shape-shifting water twink)! (Also probably Apollomon too lol)
Also Dorbickmon would be a great end evolution to the Gulus Gammamon line like Regulusmon and Arcturusmon lol

You could say Apollomon is similar to Takuya in that the fire being corrupted in Whispered Mode is similar to Takuya losing himself to the Beast Spirit, being overwhelmed by it.
I feel like Gravimon would work with the Spirit of Wind on a thematic level. The thin whips and flat paper-like hands moving as if by the winds/manipulated by gravity. And the open sky and deep Earth comes with gusts of wind. 🤔
NeoMyotismon definitely is a combination of Light and Darkness, because TRUE Darkness depends on the Light.
Dorbickmon… if not for the literal name of “Fire Fury”, I wouldn’t immediately associate it with the fire element. It feels more Magma base with red colored earth armor.
Olegmon is definitely a combination of Earth and Metal.
Zamielmon doesn’t look like ground to me, so you’re seeing something I’m missing. He reminds me of the wood elves, just with more bulky armor, especially with those arrows.
Splashmon is basically one confirmation from the higher ups from being canon.
So yeah… those are my thoughts from visuals and your theory.
May not agree with everything, but I do like the ideas and concepts all the same!

I am surprised you didn't mention that the leader of the Death Generals: Dark Knightmon is a combination of a Humanoid Digimon and a Beast Digimon to make a combined form with traits of both... Like how Aldamon is Aguinmon and BurningGreymon rearranged together
I have a unique theory that could become a what if.
Hida Hiroki & Oikawa Yukio and their partner Digimon would have been able to defeat the dark Masters instead of needing the original digidestined.
Or would have shown up and sacrificed the Mega forms or perhaps the battle mode or Paladin mode or maybe even Sovereign mode.
I am so by that point they were adults so I'm sure they would have had them.
And both of them probably had the crust of Miracle and Destiny
Each of the Death Generals are a match to one of the Fields.
NeoMyotismon: Nightmare Soldiers
Dorbickmon: Dragon's Roar
Splashmon: Deep Savers
Zamielmon: Wind Guardians
Olegmon: Metal Empire (All though he could also be Deep Savers)
Gravimon: Nature Spirits
Apollomon: Virus Busters
This has given me another theory what if they are the descendants of the Frontier spirits like them being actually the children or grandchildren or something like that
And I mean Hida Hiroki & Oikawa Yukio either defeated the Dark Masters before the original digidestined was need to be brought in or they showed up at the end and sacrifice one of their forms to allow them to become sovereigns and I mean all five of them becoming sovereigns.
So in japanese the days of the week are associated with the planets which are associated with elements (usually via the gods they're named after), as such:
Sunday - Sun - The Sun
Monday - Moon - The Moon
Tuesday - Fire - Mars
Wednesday - Water - Mercury
Thursday - Wood - Jupiter
Friday - Gold/Metal - Venus

That said, those elements sans Sun, which reused apollomon instead of making a new guy, and treating Moon as Dark, are all elements that the ancient warriors had, and except for Fire they're all the non-hero ones.
Its basically mixing adventure (and maybe other season visual) character elements together abit i think, like splasmons darkness mode has some garurumon elements in it and that could be why he controls machines armies in his ep, the friendship armor gave elec to raidramon and machine and elec go hand an hand, the green general(i cant spell that name off the top of my head) had fairy elements similar to lilymon (with some hohemon and shurimon design bits mixed) the viking like a metaled up vikmon( he odd since has no water or ice elements other than viking) cant think of other right at the moment but it definity could type in bits of the othter season i think, since ignoring manga things cross wars is like a gokaiger decade ish season of the anime so themeatic and visual ties would be expected, also maybe the new guys later on can also add bits to it like tactimon, or i could be misremembering that part xcross wars wasnt my fav so knowledge is wonky
i think a good way to bridge this gap is that the death generals are probably more variations on the spirits, sort of what ifs type of spirits, you have a corrupted version of light being Apollomon with apollo being the sun and being made of plasma you can connect the spirit of lighting to it, Gravimon is gravity, something that affects the earth but not only that gravity is another important factor for some weather conditions, Splashmon is very obviously water but ice is just another form of water, dorbickmon is very obviously fire not really any hard connections there, Olegmon is very much steel in my opinion being a metal people will have greed for but not only that Vikings in history did make a very rudimentary version of steel, and zamielmon being more nature focused does make a bit of sense, neovamdemon being darkness does make sense as well since vampires are creatures of the dark
I think it’s odd how the three veemon lines have some connection to the royal knights (ether being current members or being considered the founder of the group) but rapidmon gold doesn’t seem to have any connection
So I just had a thought, you've probably thought about this before, what if the kids from Frontier used the "evil" spirits, purifying them? Technically you did a custom purified evil spirits

What if the evil spirits could combine with the good to get upgraded forms and vise versa like the spirit of steel combines with the spirit of fire to get a new form
Honestly I actually think it's more likely that some of them were re-used concept art than they were homages BECAUSE not all of them line up one-to-one. The fact that there are weird outliers like Dorbick and Gravi who don't 100% match some of the spirits would make me think they were looking at a variety of concepts they still had in the bin.

Honestly, the 7 Death Generals are such a weird group, I get that Xros Wars-levels are kinda weird in general, but the decision to make some of them Perfect-level while the rest of them are Mega is so... weird... Definitely something Xros Wars shares with Frontier, since Frontier also didn't really take levels that seriously in a few instances. And although I doubt they intentionally tried to reference Frontier, it's definitely noteable how well they fit in some places. Another possible connection I feel could be to Adventure-antagonists, at least partially. I mean, NeoVamdemon is very obvious, either regular Myotismon, or Devimon, maybe also a bit of Piedmon in how it absorbs all the Terriermon and almost the protags partners as well? That was also kinda the original Devimon-line after all. Then Zamielmon, just visually, obviously feels tied to Puppetmon, although not really personality-wise, meanwhile mainly personality-wise I feel Gravimon has a lot of Etemon in it, but in terms of looks it also fits well with the Devi-kinda villains. Dorbickmon has... well, at least the dragon-ties to Machinedramon, and the getting defeated by a Greymon-Mega... okay, at this point I gotta admit I'm kinda reaching, but I feel at least originally, there might've been some plans like that, at least for some of them.
As for other theories... with RagnaLordmons cards just recently being revealed for the next JP-set, something dawned on me... what if the blue body of RagnaLordmon... is Spadamon? Or at least representative of it? It has the coloration, and I feel it visually also looks like it could be a Spadamon Mega. More importantly, Durandamon and Bryweludramon are already represented in RagnaLordmon as its independant arms, so... what if it was originally supposed to be a tripple fusion between all the 3 Legend Arms we have so far (yes I'm erasing Armamon)? I remember Spadamons lore implying it was a special case among the Legend Arms that was destined to be the strongest... what if this "Lordmon" is how this manifests, in it being a Legend Arms that can control other Legend Arms? What if RagnaLordmon... is something Spadamon could evolve to on its own? Okay, that's just me going completely crazy, partially based on how the Spadamon-card of that set is a Black/Red card just like RagnaLordmon. But with how little Legend Arms content Bandai gives us, it definitely feels possible, and the group has so much potential...
We know there was the Beast vs Human Digimon war at one point in Frontier's mythos and that the Ancient Digimon were the ones' who put an end to it. Who's to say that the Death Generals weren't perhaps the instigators of said war in the first place?
It kind of makes sense since most of them line up roughly with one of the normal spirits. Perhaps it was a combination of jealously and anger that they weren't chosen to inherit the spirits? Would sort of explain the idea that Apollomon develops Whispered Mode after the fact and Splashmon having Darkness Mode at all.

The Beast vs Human Digimon War was ended by Lucemon, but his tyranny saw to the uprising led by the Warrior Ten (AncientGreymon and co). The Warrior Ten sealed Lucemon away in the Dark Area, and their data were converted into the Spirits that the Chosen Children eventually inherited.
So the Spirits came into existence after both the Beast & Human Digimon War, as well as Lucemon's defeat.
