I can honestly say there has never been a Marillion album I've disliked, but without a doubt Clutching At Straws is my favourite by a country mile. The melodies and ambience just enhance the almost surreal lyrics. Marillions' finest hour, still regularly in my player.😁👍
When I was studying photographer back in 2005, I emailed him and asked if I could take his picture for a project I was working on. I'd been a fan since 82. I didn't expect for one minute that I'd actually get a reply but low and behold about 3 weeks later I got an email saying that it would be no problem. He included his mobile number in the email and asked me to give him a call to set it up. I nervously did so and we talked for about an hour on the phone about all things Marillion and his solo career. He promised me 45 minutes for the shoot which I was delighted with. When the day of the shoot came around he picked me and my assistant (wife) up at his local train station. We drove to the farm and I got set-up (after a tour of the studio that is). Ended up spending most of the day with him, got some amazing shots (which I have had blown up and framed) Fantastic experience.
Fish..his voice timbre is unique and extremely soft...gets deep inside your soul (without doubts..), and the lyrics so eccentrics and extravagant, producing such a kind of feeling that really it's hard to understand, this pushes the button of constant loop..!! ..Fish..thoughts of beauty oddness..!
It's sheer poetry put on incredibilly good music... I still blame EMI for not having intervened in the split-up of Fish & Marillion. The least they could have done was to replace that drug-addicted band manager of theirs which they had at that time back in 1988...
Fish had said himself "they guys didn´t trust him", Label was killling killing his creativity, it was time to go :-( Marillion still has a fine career, and Fish well gardening and soon touring, hopefully
After thirty years, I returned to this song and I still end up in tears at the end... Fish is a singing poet...
😢 No perfect words to describe this great masterpiece
When I first heard this I was fifteen..stuck in a kids home ...the feelings I got then ,hearing it ..I still get now
I was lucky enough to see them in my home town of Malvern 1n 82/83 for the script tour have forever been favourite band ever till fish left

Nailed it!!
I met Fish in Columbus Ohio in 97 or so. Of all the muscians I have met, to spend a few minutes with him was the greatest thrill.

Nah, nah - Derek was on a mission and EMI had no hope against the main rival
