As a jazz fan, I have been blessed enough to see S&F twice. I’ve been a fan over 20 years but I never heard them talk before though. Hearing their words Now I feel like a child in the company of great men.
Been a fan since 2001 when I found "Heat of the Sun, " in the cheap CD bin. That changed my entire approach to my own guitar playing after I heard that CD. It saved me from being a boring rock guitar player and it helped develop my own sound. Truly Strunz and Farah are my musical heroes, Forever!!
These guys were my introduction to the world of virtuoso guitar playing when my guitar teacher played some of their stuff for me. Blew my 13 year-old mind. Can't wait for the interview!

Great guitarists that I have followed since early 80's. On another note: I thought the gadget hanging off the guitar was a mic, but it must be a camera capturing the right hand's fast picking that we see in the video.
Their solos are so brilliantly constructed. Very similar to gypsy jazz; always wondered if these legends ever jammed with Stochelo or Bireli
You really need to get in touch with Ney Mello, Troy. That guy was figuring things out decades ago that everyone is just coming around to now.
I had never heard of Ney Mello, but just looked him up and picked myself off the floor a short while after. Absolutely, ridiculously amazing!!
I can't wait to buy this interview! I love these guys. Well done, Troy! I see Jorge uses a lot of arm movement in the faster lines. Sort of like Vinnie did in the 80s, but without the little finger grazing on body (I am more elbow with the little finger grazing and it works great for fast lines when I go above 120 sextuplets). I have been watching this over and over and am starting to think that alot of hybrid pickers or ones who switch tend to have more inclination towards upward pickslanting. i did quite a bit of hybrid stuff back in the day and seem to get a better grip under the string with the fingers pullback somewhat which would lead me to believe it would lead to upward pickslanting.
Love that you are including this duo in your picking analysis. Jorge is still a relatively unsung hero and at 70!? still rips. Check out the band Caldera for rtf era fusion and blistering solos. Cant wait to see the full interview.
Troy, if you get a chance would love to see Ian Crighton up close He was blazing Al Dimeola style runs and keyboard unison lines back in the late 70's and is still active. I've heard some advanced tapping that he was doing around 77 or 78 and wondered if he predated Van Halen.

Thanks Jim! Not familiar with Ian and a quick CZcams search pulls up mostly concert clips where the guitar isn't very audible. If you've got any better sources we're happy to take a look.
Thanks Jim! The first link I can't really hear the guitar at all, it's like they shut his mic off - strange mix! The second clip, the solo is honestly pretty sloppy. The unison lines with keyboard might be cleaner because they're slower and they sound composed, but I can't really tell. And herein lies the challenge of doing the interviews we do - we really don't want to make anyone look bad. And there are plenty of great players, who musically, I like a lot, and who wrote awesome tunes and played with great feel... but who I think it would be awkward for all concerned to do a "magnet"-style interview with.
I completely respect that. I can also see that to really benefit fot the advancement of technique you have to be selective in who is analyzed. Thanks for taking the time to look and for doing what you do.

Hi Troy! Really digging these series you are making! These two are my favorite in the "Latin Jazz" pool. Super musical. I uploaded Nuevo Sol cover about a year ago. One of my favorite by them. I actually do the opposite with my picking I believe? Upward slanting? I don't know, you're the expert on that..ha .These two are a great choice to your series. Looking forward to watching more of this.

I see more upward pick slanting and at times almost like the reverse flextenion above the string being played like a reverse Albert lee which makes sense considering that Albert is a downward pick slanter I have done some experiments where I say to myself ok now I'm not going to rotate my forearm from upward pick slanting to see what is required and of course the door knocker movement is required but only on the up strokes

Andy James has totally been checking this shit out. His new stuff is all upward pickslanting. He rarely does two way stuff anymore because he's a natural upward slanter.

I learned to play with an acoustic guitar and I'm primarily upward pickslanter. Could it have any relation?
Not a crazy hypothesis! Plenty of great acoustic uwps players, from DiMeola and McLaughlin to David Grier and Brian Sutton in bluegrass. Maybe the size of the box naturally leads to an arm/hand position which facilitates uwps.
