To provide a little context to the lyrics, Hank isn't necessarily comparing the country lifestyle to the big city in a derogatory manner. The man who was murdered that he is referring to was an actual person, and a close friend to Hank Williams Jr. His name was Michael and he, in fact, was robbed and killed for a petty amount of cash in a convenient store by a hardened criminal (who was never caught, I'd like to add). The majority of what Hank writes about is literal personal experiences. A song I'd recommend reviewing is "All In Alabama", which is about him surviving a 540' foot fall down the side of Ajax mountain when hunting with friends. The signature hat, beard and sunglasses is to conceal his scars, which only become more visible with time. You'll notice that one side of his face is higher than the other, which is due to plastic surgery. He had 17 major operations following the accident, and awoke from his coma to Johnny and June Carter Cash at his bedside (June Carter was his godmother). Another great song would be "Man Of Steel", which is related to his legendary father dying when Hank was only 3. Incredible writing with meat on the bone.

I know I am a few years late, this just popped up on my feed for some reason, I hit the comments section to say what you said, and was happy to see others knew this, Hank writes and sings about real life experiences, something most metal heads wont ever get, Hank was never one to set around looking for something to write about, then searching for something that rhymed with it like most metal songs, Hank would simply remanence and then make a song out of his memories.. Ryan Upchurch does the same thing, which is why he is so liked by his fans, his songs speak of him and his life experiences rather than just arranging popular words in a way that rhymed with catchy hook, .. These kinds of songs always have a long life, they age well and always connect with the listener, because they are real life experiences instead of just a made up story

Thank you for explaining that to everyone. People jump to conclusions with they’re being defensive for no reason. That response bothered me. It’s also odd that 2 years later you have people leaving the cities like crazy because of crime. It’s traders from everywhere you go. But it matters how the town react to that crime.

I'm sitting here in my living room looking out the window looking at deer walking out of the swamp, working on a set of arrows for the sinew backed bow I made. There's a stream that runs by the house so big deal if we lose electricity and the well pump stops. I know how to skin a buck and get food from the woods, trap, and stay warm. I get this song.

I don’t think he was necessarily saying that about his friend being mugged could only happen in the city. It was a true story, that happened in his life. And I don’t think he was saying country life or raising is better than any other. At least not in my opinion. I think he was just speaking about what he know’s. Hank Jr. is one of my favorite artist of any genre as I tend to like a little of all genre’s. But country and southern rock are definitely my sweet spot. And I appreciate you or anyone giving a genre that isn’t their “sweet spot” a chance. As their is something that can be enjoyed and learned from every genre/type of music. And if your open or it, you can find something that speaks to you in every one of them. I enjoyed your reaction very much, and keep it up. Peace brother.

I agree that nobody is better than anyone else but living in the country in my opinion is about as good as it gets and like Hank said We can survive , maybe not forever but definitely longer. That's not saying all country folks could , just the ones of us blessed enough to know how to live off the land and because we can do that then our neighbors can survive too. We may not have all the lights and tall buildings but we definitely take care of each other

The only thing about us country folks is you just have to get used to the "crazy" relatives. Everybody's got one in their family (there's 2 in mine actually) LOL we don't hide them away...we parade them on the front porch for everyone to see. This song was released in 1982. I remember it well. I was raised in a small Textile Community in the south where we had a company store that was owned by the mill. We had no car in my familiy until I was a teenager since the community was pretty much self sustaning, We only left the community to go pay bills in town in which me and my dad walked five miles to when it was time to go pay bills. No cell phones or internet in those days. i would charge candy, soda's on my dad's account at the company store and my mom would make me pull my red wagon to the store a few blocks away as a young child with a grocery list to give the stocker and he would round up what was on the list. My dad worked in the mill over 45 years. My grand dad retired from there and I worked in the mill for over 15 years until, like many mills down in the south, it was shut down. I later moved to the country about 8 miles from my cotton mill community where i was raised. Most cotton mill communities were not in or even near a city. Our small town was like 5 miles away. So, you have one company store, one or two resurants, two or three churches and thats it. Even the wooden houses where built by the mill and sold cheap to mill workers. The old mill i worked in was built in 1902 and stopped running in 1996 when i was one of the last workers to be laid off. It was stripped of anything of value and is standing in ruin and rubble with just the elevator towers, the smoke stack and one or two walls standing and grown over. The sad thing is, there were two other sister mills in my town that was shut down and in ruin along with a few more in my county gutted out like hundreds of mills down in the south around that time. Textiles was our livelyhood like coal was to the miners in West Virginia. Now it's all gone and we had to find work where we could.

It's true he was comparing lifestyles but he is also telling you what he would do to the guy that killed his friend. Beechnut is chew tobacco and you get the juice from it in your eyes and it's as bad as red peppers. So not only was he gonna shoot him, he was gonna blind him too. Didn't matter what they did or where they came from. They were true friends. And we take care of friends. We love Bocephus. He's from my part of the country. I'm an hour from Nashville Tennessee (Music City). He's had a lot to deal with in his life and lesser men wouldn't have made it. He's telling the truth about the way it is where we come from. We are old ways and we can take care of ourselves. Enjoyed your reaction.❤😊

This song was written in a different time than now, its pretty old song. When he wrote the song, there was a friend killed that way. Back in those days, NYC use to have a lot more violence than they do now..NYC has made a lot of changes since back then..I do know many of Hanks songs are based on events in his life or of those he knows..
I do not think it was a hit against NYC or comparing...I think it just is what is, no matter where it would have happened..Nowadays, people are more offended by terms like guns, or hunting etc also..So the point here was, country boys can survive, and his friend was a country boy who made it big in the city but died, and he just wants revenge for his friends life...Back then when I was a kid, bad stuff just hardly ever happened out here in the country where I live, maybe every few years some dude beat up someone. My nearest little town, is so small with one store, a post office and 4 churches and a park, and a bunch of old wood framed houses...Every house is a drug house, a meth house now..I can not go to my little country town no more...I have to drive 30 miles to a bigger town, that is much safer in the actual shopping districts etc. But it does have a bad neighborhood across the river though...Hanks song was written 40 years ago..

Actually one IS better than the other, city folk are all packed in together like sardines and reliant on grocery stores and money. Country folk are rural and self sufficient and self reliant and can get by on their own, make almost anything we need, and I guaranty you when the pandemic hit city folk were more worried and had a tougher time than country folks. And if shit keeps going like it looks like it is going the country is the place to be. I’d also venture the guess that with all that said and how spread out country folks are we pose a bigger threat to the government and they most likely know that too.

Hank w MNF was cancelled before cancel culture even started lol. Talking down on the savior Barry Soetoro, that there was blasphemy. And Hank is a huge Steelers fan as well
P.s. It's just an anecdotal story. He's proud of how he grew up and has every right to be. Hank damn near lost his life out in the country falling 500ft off a mountain in Montana...also an anecdotal story that upon its mention need not make country folks butthurt 🤷

You say you “don’t like comparing lives”.
Yet, that’s the main POINT of the song. No matter which side of the line you’re on. Ya know, sone things ARE better than other things. Wether you like it or not- LIFESTYLES falls into that category along with a bunch of other stuff. So, contrary to what you stated, you really don’t like the song.
