  • A collection of "Movies from Space" bumpers and programming commercials from SPACE during the airing of "Forbidden Planet". I'm unsure of whether this recording is from the launch date of the channel on October 17th, since it lines up with what has been archived so far, or if it's from a later date in October, since MIB hadn't premiered on the channel until November. The tape cuts to the opening credits of Forbidden Planet after recording a different channel, and the program was followed by "Conan: The Making of a Legend", so I have no way of verifying the exact date unless the schedules for October exist online (or someone remembers very well!) It also included the music video for Fluke's "Atom Bomb", a song for the 1996 game Wipeout 2097 (XL). Recorded in Calgary, Alberta.

I still remember rushing home from school to see if the Space channel had launched yet to find they were airing footage of NASA's mission control with a countdown until they began with Forbidden Planet. I got to see so much classic genre movies and shows that were all new to me thanks to Space, great memories.
Fantastic now I sound like a boomer, lmao

You're not alone. They played ton of classic movies I'd read about for years but thought I'd never get the chance to see. The channel quickly went down the tubes after its first three years or so, but fortunately DVD and now streaming have taken its place. Still, I love the serendipity of seeing something in the TV listings and then waiting excitedly for it.

@@KRhetor I'm glad I'm not the only one who got to have that experience with the channel, especially in the days before you could download anything you want from the internet. CometTV is a neat little sci fi channel that still broadcasts similar content, I ditched cable and got an antenna so I could pick it up and get the nostalgia trip. :D

the Space Channel had some cool bumpers with rendered footage of satellites in space orbiting planets, usually backed with classical music, and featuring a quote from a scientist; really fun to remember

Do you happen to have the classic 20th Century Fox logo from Space's airings of The Day The Earth Stood Still?

Why is the sound so high pitched

While I do enjoy the video, there's one nitpick I would like to address. The video sounds like it's been sped up. I seem to notice this because I've seen other videos related to SPACE. I don't know what caused the video to speed up, but I thought I would mention this to you.

Hi! I actually noticed this too, as the audio in my original capture sounded a bit higher-pitch in comparison to the other archived commercials I'd seen (particularly the X-Files ones, and the music video at the end). Either this was a result of the tape degrading, or the actual broadcast had an issue - there was about a minute of silence on the SPACE logo at 6:46 that I cut down for time, and the space fact bumper that followed cut out exactly as it did in the video. I didn't want to try to correct it in the end as I'm not sure how some of the commercials actually sounded, and I wanted to upload it as close to its original capture as possible. Hope this helps!
