If a DO student doesn't have access to research where they can actually be productive at/near their institution, then surgical subs will be pretty difficult. They're probably better off going into a mid-tier IM residency then trying for cards/GI

Yeah, it is harder to do a surgical subspecialty but it can still be done if you work really hard. Cards and GI are fellowships though, so doing research in IM residency should be fine.

@@DrAdnan I know they're fellowships. I just mean't that if you can't get research productivity as a DO then it's probably better to get a solid step2 and go into IM where you can then try for cards/GI on a more relatively even playing field. My first comment had "then" which I think you mistook for "than" so it sounded like I was comparing IM to cards which we know doesn't sense

By it being necessary to take the Step exam, wouldn't that mean that there is bias? At the very least, the perception of bias to encourage taking a whole other assessment exam?

Yeah, there is still some bias but that has gone down a lot over the years and continues to go down

It sounds like the merger made it tough in the short term, but hopefully better in the long term for DOs

      I’d say that’s a fair assessment
