They handled this return to the Roller Derby totally wrong. It should have been a return to Roller DERBY, not Roller GAMES. Roller GAMES was so overly theatrical and obviously staged, whereas the DERBY came across as actually having great skating...even though the result of each game was already known, they were able to do whatever they wanted between the beginning and the end of the game, as long as the end of the game matched what they were supposed to have happen. When the DERBY died, so did the "sport". The integration of Roller Derby skaters into Roller Games was totally mishandled. It was as if the Games people were punishing the Derby people for not being a part of their act for all of those years. The Derby skaters were treated as second class citizens, and always lost fights and jams. Joanie Weston was particularly mishandled. She was treated as a second class citizen, and was manhandled for no reason by the likes of Roberta Mitchell, Sally Vega etc... which would NEVER have happened had they adopted some of the Roller DERBY into the surviving "sport". Joanie was forced to play second fiddle to everyone and it was a sad sight to see. But, Joanie, seeing the handwriting on the wall, did what was asked of her. She was a true class act. Years later, when Derby came back, Joanie reassumed her ascendency to the top of the throne, which was where she truly belonged. The sport died because it emphasized Roller GAMES at the expense of Roller DERBY. This was, by far, the biggest mistake they made, and it cost them dearly. It actually cost them their entire "sport", which never, ever regained the popularity it had in the early 1970s, due to this fact.
