    I've had the same laminate down for 5 years in the passageway living, dining room and the basement no problems whatsoever and it still looks as good as the day it was put down, as a matter of fact I need to reprint

    We installed our laminate flooring in our living room/dining room 3 years ago. We live in a townhome on a slab- no basement. So one little detail we skipped was leveling the concrete floor after removing the carpeting....well we've kind of found out the hard way that once the flooring settles, it will separate in places and buckle. Thankfully these spots are under furnature, and not the first thing you see when you walk into our living room. It's a great option if you have pets or kids running in and out of your house, all of our downstairs is hard surface flooring. Great video!

      Laminate Flooring is not all the same, most of what you are buying at the big box stores are MDF core with a paper back, with expansion rates in the middle to upper teens, none of them make laminate, they buy laminate on the open market, and everything you will learn on You Tube will be about these same MDF , paper back floors .I want you to Google Laminate Flooring with HDF Core, Laminate front and back, with expansion rates at 6% or less.These will have a life time residential and 15 year commercial warranty. I am retired now after over 40 years of writing specifications for architects, so I am not selling anything. Don;t ask flooring dealers, they only sell what they know.

    i have laminate flooring in 15 rooms and in 5 bathrooms and LOVI it! I have some hardwood maple floors also and love them too. Before I had the laminate floors installed I took one piece and abused it in all ways I could think of. I put a lighter to it, hammer, soaked it in a tub of water. put bleach on it. Only problems: steak knife scratched it and nail polish remover stained it.

    Water isn't a problem in most cases. I have had laminate for years in all major areas (other than kitchen / bath and laundry rooms) and have never had a water issue, and we live in a rainy climate- walking into the house always tracks water. Shaw floors have held up wonderfully. It has been impervious to the dogs nails running around. The only thing that has hurt it was the rocking chair because it would get moved without picking it up.

    I have oak Pergo (?) laminate in the kitchen, 2 bathrooms, foyer, and a landing going to the garage. I love it, but then I never really soaked it. I put a mat under the dogs bowl just in case. These are the only problems I've come across: 1. The moulding appears to be swelling on the ends. I'm trying to decide if it's possible to just file the ends down or does it have to be replaced? 2. I have a family room that adjoins the kitchen and one of the bathrooms. I would like to add laminate to the family room (and the basement stairs), but it must match. I've found one that is very close, but I'm finding also that the locking mechanism is different than it used to be which would make it almost impossible to connect the rooms. I was told that a strip could be put down between the rooms, but that just sounds like an added piece to collect dirt. Which leads me to #3. You never know how much dust you have on your carpeting, but you sure do with laminate! Dust collects around the edges which requires almost a daily cleaning. Not the whole floor, just the edges. I grew up in a house with hardwood floors, and as a child I loved to slide across the floors in my stocking feet. After a few splinters in my feet though, I learned not to do that.(My parents kept an immaculate home, so it's not as though it wasn't maintained.) I haven't tried to use the laminate as a slip n slide, but I'm sure there are no splinters. Any suggestions?

My question is after removing the carpet from my slab I noticed along one wall this is basically no gap between the baseboard and the slab?? This is only on one wall but I'm curious doesn't the flooring suppose to fit under the baseboards? If so what is my solution? Thanks for the great information thru your videos. Have a great day pal.

  • @UtwoBed
    @UtwoBed Před 9 lety +6

    I have a question for you. Water is the enemy, right? Yet the manufacturers tell you not to wax the laminate flooring. Why??? It would seem to me that since water can easily destroy these laminates that the wise thing to do would be to, at the very least, somehow water proof the seams. I would think they would recommend sealing the flooring with a wax or silicone, or anything that will cause water to bead up and not penetrate. Why isn't this done??

    • @allfurone
      @allfurone Před 8 lety +2

      +UtwoBed Waxing or siliconing the floors themselves can make them Dangerously slippery. To w/proof seams, some installers have used a slight bead of glue along the joints during assembly. Immediately wipe off any ooz-age with a damp rag.

    • @tomsetlock7380
      @tomsetlock7380 Před 6 lety

      Yeah I thought of that too gluing the seams but this floor is supposed to be floating?

    • @DiffEQ
      @DiffEQ Před 6 lety +1

      Floating means it's not fastened to the substrate. It doesn't matter if the planks are attached to each other.

  • @HBSuccess
    @HBSuccess Před 9 lety +2

    Here's the bottom line. Full-thickness real hardwood will last for the life of the structure or longer. There is plenty of hardwood flooring installed in the 17-1800s that is still in use either in their original buildings or reclaimed and installed in newer buildings. Laminate OTOH is more like vinyl sheet flooring or carpeting. It's going to get ratty looking over time and will eventually need to be replaced. Pro- great for quick re-decorating. Con - costs $$ every time it's replaced (but to be fair - it's just as expensive to re-finish real hardwood when that time comes.

    Great video and good tips; I bought a house a few months ago and it has the laminate floors. It looks great very pretty. After two months, i noticed that the the floor right in front of the hall way started bowing out in several places. I asked a friend and he said that it was prob installed too tight so he came and took out trim and made some cuts along the edge and put it back together. Needless to say the bowing/buckling is still there. Do you think that the boards are warped? tips?

      It's simple just find a wood filler that matches the colour of your floor, fill the scratch allow to dry, then lightly sand and scrub of the excess with a non abrasive cloth finishing with a dab of wax or polish.

    Real hardwood flooring is great... if you're rich. You can install a laminate floor, and then five years later, rip it out easily, replace it with new stuff (different color or whatever), and that would still be cheaper than having three-quarter inch oak wood flooring installed in your place.

    Laminate flooring generally is "poor mans" equivalent of true hardwood floors. There are many different qualities of laminate some obviously will be better than others. I would never lay laminate in areas prone to damp or wetness ( Kitchens, Bathrooms etc ). Bear in mind for those of you with Dogs, they can be dangerous to you four legged friends, they will slip and slide all over the place and joint damage is not uncommon.
    Laminate has it's uses it's relatively cheap and easy to install,
