@@xsir_hcx3897 I'm able to get some really good tones out of my fender championship 100. It sounds good with anything from classic rock to punk rock. I have a American strat and I prefer the jaguar to it. Something about the binding on the headstock just make it feel alot more enjoyable to play. Also a side note. It tends to stay in tune for awhile. From sitting with temp change to playing for awhile it stays in tune very well. I can see why Kurt liked this guitar and it's set up.
I have one from the 60s, I don't know if they're the same as newer ones. It used to belong to my late uncle. He should do one if he didn't already did.
That's a common problem with the Mexican Fenders, the screws get over-tightened. So you wind up with either the screw hole or screw head stripped out. I have a Strat and and a bass that I bought new with several of each like that.
While I wasn't the biggest Nirvana fan, I remember I was looking for my first electric after my first full time summer job. I got my original summer 1997 for $400-something, iirc. Of course an American Strat was $999 back then. Now American Original Strat is $2000 and this is $1200 or $2000 for the originals. I gotta say, the out of phase switch was what made me get it. However, in the late 90's the pickups were weak and anemic. The underpowered pickups plagued me in late 90's after HS and 2000's in bands in LA. Of course, now the movement is towards combos instead of stacks and front of house mic'd amps. Underwound vintage sounds are acceptable... but knowing Trogly's set up, I think these new pickups are a little more hot and voiced differently. Glad they went with Rosewood fingerboards. Personally, if I could go back in time, I would probably have gotten a G&L Fallout. Same looks but I've recently fallen in love with P90's. And Fallout has better tuning stability. Also, I didn't know short and full scale and always regretted the short scale on that JagStang. Still, warms my heart it came back.
I want this so much. As a smaller built person it would easier to play than my teles, and the humbucker and single combo does a more useable out of phase than 2 singles.
You should look into the Fender Duosonic HS. They are short scale, have the same single coil/humbucker configuration. They are awesome guitars and way more affordable.
The "In Utero" tour** rather. he played Fender Mustangs regularly during the "In Utero" tour. Whilst the "Nevermind" promotion tour Kurt played mostly his Fender Jaguar, throughout.
I remember when these first came out and always thought they were kind of odd-looking in a weird but cool way. Not sure if I would ever own one but neat nevertheless and nice to see Fender having another go at it. I liked how the neck pickup sounded and also in the middle position. Pretty cool and nice tribute to the late Kurt Cobain, thanks Trogly! 👍
Hey man. Nice review! I'm currently obsessing on offset guitars and the JagStang hits a unique place amongst the rest. I super appreciate the detail you put into this. It really helps me know the guitar without actually holding one in my hands. I played Mustangs for many years so I have a good reference point. Never owned a Jag. Though I was in love with the Mustang I must say I really don't want to return to a short scale guitar. Anyway...thank you! It was cool the way you walked through everything. Thank you!!!!
At 11:20-ish if you loosen the two neck plate screws closest to the body a lot-then loosen the two neck plate screws closest to the neck a little bit you can actually tilt the neck and get access to the truss rod screw without taking the pickguard off (capo the strings at the first fret)
I just got one a few weeks ago, fiesta red, made in 2021. Hands down one of the best guitars I've ever had the pleasure of owning. I don't even like Nirvana or Cobain, but I love this guitar, and I will never part with it. I didn't check the neck scale (it was a surprise gift and I was too excited to look into it) and put my regular D'Addario 8's on it. Way too loose. Went up to 9's and it's perfect.
I have the 1996 50th Anniversary 1st run in Sonic Blue. I paid $225 in 1996 with a hard shell case and I have to admit it’s gotten about 1hr playing on it at most. I had it looked at and tuned up a few months ago and my Luthier couldn’t believe it was in That mint of shape. Great Guitar!
Earnie Bailey had to change the bridge, put in a hot rails, and 500k pots. The proto also didn’t have a body contour which Kurt wanted in most of his guitars (besides the Univox which is paper thin). Kinda sucks he only played 2 shows with it. I think if he had another tour this guitar would’ve been a go-to. Also sucks that fender auctioned his drawings along with his fiesta red jagstang and cardboard pieces. I really wanted to see those at their US factory.
I have an original MIJ 1995 Jagstang with the "Designed By Kurt Cobain" sticker and "Fender 50th Anniversary" gold badge on the back of the head stock. I made sure to order one before they were released. I paid $620 back then.
I always find it funny there’s little acknowledgment of the fact that Kurt mostly used strats with hot rails on the bridge. If you watch the Reading show you’ll notice he didn’t use the jag as much as his strats. There should be a kc signature strat
That would basically be a 60's Vintera Strat in sunburst with a rosewood fretboard and a hot rail factory installed. It would also make sense to also make it available in white based on the 1992 MTV VMA guitar. I used to be a mega Nirvana fan but I don't really like some of the things he promoted in some of his songs, and knowing how he died listening to his music just bums me out, even the sound of his voice is kinda depressing even though I like the sound of it.
Fender short scale is 22.5 or 22.75 depending on the decade however 24 is medium scale length. Check out the music masters and duo Sonic's of the 50's-60's and also the 90's run.
@@joebryant8500 I have a 93 rare vintage guitars don't stay in Canada long the American dollar goes farther here and if it's" made in USA" they don't have to pay extra to import
To echo a lot of the other commenters, this utterly nails Kurt's tone (combined with your amp of choice). The price might be a bit much, but if someone's trying to get the Nirvana sound, it might be worth it. And that's definitely one of the darkest bridge humbucker sounds I've ever heard in any guitar demo. That's good to know when it comes to modding my own instruments. Also, a set of .11 GHS Boomers might help keep that in tune.
You wanna review a cool MIM fender? The Dave Murray signature strat is a beast. In my personal opinion at least. I’m kinda a beginner so I’m easily impressed though.
Those - very thoughtfully named! - pickups sound really great! They do have that signature tone, especially the neck pickup, which is the best Fender stock single coil I've heard in a long time.
Would love to see you cover the Modern Player Mustang from several years ago. As far as I know it was the first Mustang with p-90’s but, unlike the current p90 Mustang that Squier is making, this one still had the 3 way switches above the pickups. It allowed a TON of super cool sounds. It also had a Pine body which was odd and made the guitar at least seem heavier than normal mustangs. I had one in surf green, and it was a very unique guitar.
Just can't get over that body style, but if I got one, I would do a coil split or series parallel for the bridge switch. I mean, you can put the pickups out of phase with the other switch, so having more options with the bridge switch would be cool.
I have a Japan-made Jag-Stang, and YES -- the pickguard on the dial-side is much sharper. The mexi-jag-stang is rounded lke the body. I got mine for 200 dollars, threaded the wrong way. Getting the high-e string to sit in the saddle after its first home-set-up was unreasonably hard, until I saw it correctly strung the other way. "oh, like the way some people string a Les Paul" says I. This was actually just yesterday morning.
“Lithium” isn’t played in drop D there Trogley. Standard tuning. Albeit might have been tuned down a half step for the recording. But no drop tuning. Heart shaped box , yes, is in Drop D. Along with “Blew” and “Negative Creep” and “been a son”. Everything else is played in standard.
5:13 pretty sure that the pickups are wired in parallel no matter what position the switch is on. the reason it goes out of phase is when the pickup leads are swapped, so the pup signals are "inverted" relative to each other which is what does the phase cancellation. i modified my jazzmaster to have the upper switch go from parallel to series and while it certainly has a distinct character of its own, putting neck and bridge in series sounds nothing like OOP
As a die hard nirvana fan that knows to much about all nirvana facts I can say the jag stang bridge pick-up is a dimarzio super distortion and the neck pick up is a fender custom single coil safely Kurt died before the fiesta red jag stang could arrive leave any questions in a reply
I'm glad they are slightly different from the original run. Fender finally fixed that pickguard so it fits the horn alot better. Also noticed its a 60s style pickguard! That's awesome. Still believe they should of added some body contours atleast a belly contour.

I think Kurt was kind of ambidextrous. Kurt wrote and threw things with his right. But played lefty. It's probably just how he always felt comfortable holding a guitar.
I bought a Jag-stang in 1999 for $600 it was fiesta red and it looked very similar to this version. The sound was too chunky for my taste and it became more for looks than for playing. I sold it in 2003 for $500 now I'm wishing I would've held onto it. I was a huge Nirvana fan in my younger years which was the main reason for buying it. I might eventually buy another one but I'm gonna wait for the prices to drop, which I'm sure they will eventually, before I decide if it's a guitar I want in my arsenal.

I instinctively did the knob reverse on my jazz bass after I took it apart, such as how the knobs are laid out on this guitar, because of that exact reason, when I hold it it feels upside down to me versus looking at it from the front.
I've never liked the look of this one, honestly 🤷 seems like it'd be ergonomically lopsided. Maybe my tune will change after this episode or if I get to play one in person, but for now, I dunno, just seems off to me. Greetings and well wishes from Utah man!
Agreed, its look is an acquired taste. My Son is a big Off-Set fan and introduced me to the Jazzmaster. While not a huge fan he has a '66 RI Jazzmaster with the block inlays and I can admit that I do play it from time to time as it is something different and inspiring. Greetings and well wishes from Northern Michigan.
It amazes me that ANY guitar is still made where you have to remove the neck to adjust the truss -rod. WHY? For "vintage specs"? So many possible pitfalls in repeatedly removing/reattaching a neck. Is head stock access or an access channel in the body THAT unacceptable to purists? Guitarist can be have strange priorities about these things.
I would rather have one of the MIJ Squier Venus guitars that were actually made in conjunction with Courtney Love - although not technically a "signature" model.
I have 9-42s on my Squier mustang and it stays in tune reasonably well, considering it doesn't have the most stable of vibrato systems out there. I can give it quite a dive without slipping out of tune.
Pleasantly surprised by the guitar! Great tones - it just needs some heavier gauge strings on it

I got mine xmas 96 mine was 420
I want this so much. As a smaller built person it would easier to play than my teles, and the humbucker and single combo does a more useable out of phase than 2 singles.
You probably have already, but check out Ibanez Mikro guitars, I used one many moons ago and it was actually pretty comfortable even as a big guy.
You should look into the Fender Duosonic HS. They are short scale, have the same single coil/humbucker configuration. They are awesome guitars and way more affordable.
I wasn't interested in this guitar at all until seeing this video. It really sounds great. Cool guitar!
You are really getting your chops up. That lithium riff you played was really good!
Wang Dang Sweet Jagstang
Trogly's in the HOUSE!!!
Wow awesome
@@rondobondo6600 🍪
At 11:20-ish if you loosen the two neck plate screws closest to the body a lot-then loosen the two neck plate screws closest to the neck a little bit you can actually tilt the neck and get access to the truss rod screw without taking the pickguard off (capo the strings at the first fret)
I may have commented this already but I'm floored by how good this thing sounds on every review.
Out of phase as “anemic” 🤣 I’m digging your word choice here 👍 (and I appreciate you dropping knowledge in every video). Big ups !! 🙌
Missed an opportunity to pick up one of the Japanese ones a few years back. I prefer his Jaguar
If it’s a lefty are you by chance looking to sell it?
im addicted to that neck pickup
@@joebryant8500 I have a 93 rare vintage guitars don't stay in Canada long the American dollar goes farther here and if it's" made in USA" they don't have to pay extra to import
it sounds like people think it looks kinda weird but i genuinely think it looks totally badass
5:12 I think you meant in phase, not in series here
To echo a lot of the other commenters, this utterly nails Kurt's tone (combined with your amp of choice).
Yeah, I swear by GHS Boomers, used 'em for years. I used to use Ernie Balls but I found strings broke way less once I'd switched.
I think this guitar would be even better with even hotter pick-ups if you ask me, especially the bridge one (I would rather chose a 16 kΩ over a 8kΩ).
I like it, I don't care for that powder(sonic) blue color but I do like the fact that the headstock isn't upside down.
fantastic sounding neck pickup
You wanna review a cool MIM fender? The Dave Murray signature strat is a beast. In my personal opinion at least. I’m kinda a beginner so I’m easily impressed though.
why are you playing lithium in drop d
Those - very thoughtfully named! - pickups sound really great! They do have that signature tone, especially the neck pickup, which is the best Fender stock single coil I've heard in a long time.
New intro logo I dig it
Would love to see you cover the Modern Player Mustang from several years ago.
For the price, they could at least include a hard case.
Just can't get over that body style, but if I got one, I would do a coil split or series parallel for the bridge switch. I mean, you can put the pickups out of phase with the other switch, so having more options with the bridge switch would be cool.
Such a dope guitar! I think once you acclimatise to it’s looks the cool factor and amazing actual playability more than takes over
I have a Japan-made Jag-Stang, and YES -- the pickguard on the dial-side is much sharper.
This was actually just yesterday morning.
should have reverse headstocks
“Lithium” isn’t played in drop D there Trogley. Standard tuning. Albeit might have been tuned down a half step for the recording. But no drop tuning.
Heart shaped box , yes, is in Drop D. Along with “Blew” and “Negative Creep” and “been a son”. Everything else is played in standard.
THANK you !!!
But did he use a jagstang on nevermind...or did he use a mustang???
The jagstang didn't exist in 1991.
@@sho-nuffmadrigal6857 yes..thats what I had originally thought.
Awesome,
Trogly's in the house 🏠 😳 🙄 👀 😂 😐.
As a die hard nirvana fan that knows to much about all nirvana facts I can say the jag stang bridge pick-up is a dimarzio super distortion and the neck pick up is a fender custom single coil safely Kurt died before the fiesta red jag stang could arrive leave any questions in a reply
Looks so much better lefty tbh
it would be kool flipped 1:18 .. explorer-esque with reverse headstock Fender ;) .. oh .. 9:42 this is close
I really wanted trogly to do a video on this guitar
Tried the fiesta red at my local guitar shop last week. I can say it's a very unique guitar and took me a while to figure out the controls.
A friend who I played in a band with while in high school in the early 90’s bought a fiesta red jagstang. It sounded cool and looked cool.
I'm glad they are slightly different from the original run.
Fender finally fixed that pickguard so it fits the horn alot better. Also noticed its a 60s style pickguard! That's awesome.
Still believe they should of added some body contours atleast a belly contour.
I love it....I notice trogly sees alit of cartoon characters in his guitars bunny's and faces and spiders..I dig it..he's got a mind that associated shapes with this gs he knows

LOVE THE VIDEO!
Watching Trogly at the pub. Get some of that!
Love ya work .
I'm watching before going to the pub to play live music ! 🤘🤘
Cobain was actually a rightie, but he chose to play with his left.
Is that true? That sounds counter intuitive, leftie guitars are rarer and more expensivr
No.
Thatt guitar sounds great trogly
It would be cool if there were a Kurt Cobain signature on the headstock!
i've been looking forward to this one for a while! I'd love to see you find and review the Gibson Custom Shop 1974 Randy Rhoads Les Paul Custom Aged

Ergonomically, it sits perfectly when you strap in and stand up. Sitting is not as good as a Jazzmaster/Jaguar though.
Utah is shaped weird too. Greetings from Laos.
I can imagine the Fender team high-fiving each other right now. Cool vid!
Yes.
Check out the Jagstang done right. It looks a lot better and adds more of the switches the Jaguar has
I would buy one if they were a lower price. Im not into paying for a name
Especially when Cobain used to surf pawns for guitars

A guitar that sounds good through his amp. Please review more Fenders.
Cheers

This thing sounds really great. It's a bit funny that the neck pickup sounds brighter than the bridge.
A huge nirvana guitar fan would probably be fine with just a squier
Squier with a hot rail pickup and you are on the other side, also i think the Jag signature is more comfortable
