Four Squirrel Hunting Tips!

  • Squirrel hunting used to be a right of passage. Kids would start out with their grandpas or fathers chasing down squirrels until they graduated to bigger game. These days squirrel hunters seem hard to come by, and if you're curious about trying it you might have a hard time finding a mentor. Well in this video we go over four tips to get started squirrel hunting. I'm a little out of practice following the holiday break and I tend to ramble a bit.

    Everything said in this video is absolutely true...but I had to laugh when he said people who hunt for squirrels see deer all the time - and vice-versa. I used to walk all throughout a forest hunting squirrels but now I've figured out that just sitting tight in a nice area will increase my chances. Facts

      A lot of people make the mistake of thinking if they just keep walking they’ll find a squirrel. You might, but you’ll miss a lot more. Find a good spot and sit for a while.

      If you're in the South, there's another option. Most of the time, you can find Kudzu vines running to or close to the squirrel's nest. Instead of sitting and waiting or shooting into nests, hoping they fall out, (forget all that sitting and patience stuff), shake the Kudzu vines and make the squirrel run. Now, that is some FUN and challenging hunting. They take off running and jumping. The best chance they've got if you're in a group is to jump to the ground, which they are perfectly capable of doing from heights, and then they limit your shots depending on where your friends are. FUN, FUN!!! haha I've got such great memories of this type of hunting with my uncles, cousins, etc.

    Today’s High powered air rifles and squirrel hunting go together very well, if you do your due diligence and keep within you accuracy range. I’m not loud enough with my voice calls but a good bark call helps. It doesn’t bring them in but many times you can get them to bark back and clue you in to where they are.

    1) the best time/season to hunt squirrels is in winter when there are no leaves on the trees..2) the best method to hunt squirrels is to sit in a saddle or tree stand 3) if just strolling through the woods for squirrels always always take a 2nd partner and split the trees..;.4) make sure there are squirrels in them there woods first (the area has not been over hunted for them)..5) learn to shoot a .17 or ..22 accurately at long distances so you can hunt from a distance..6) forget calls 7) remember no one on this planet knows how to hunt anything \ there are no rules to hunt any one animal..

    • @reb1050
      @reb1050 Před rokem

      I agree with what you're saying. However, IF you hunt while the leaves are on the trees, that's when you need the shotgun. The 3rd. recommendation is definitely true. Even while walking, let one lead and the other follow by about 25 yds. or so. You would be amazed how often the second person will see a squirrel that moves to the opposite side of a tree when the first person passes by it. And, as you recommend, a good .17 or .22 with a good variable scope is a must.

  • @donaldjones5701

I have umarex octane and there is the wide range of other highly accurate air rifles that can do headshots from 30 to 100 yards easily when you take time to tune the rifle and scope together and practice. Look up air rifle South Africa with Matt Dubber and you will see him take $150 to 200 yd shots with a specialized air rifle on monkeys and ground squirrels or whatever they call them. Enjoy and make sure you watch a skinning video after. It's not that hard.

    I'd rather have 1 .22 shot versus 10 shotgun shot squirrel

    Completely disagree on shotgun. The main point of squirrel hunting for a newbie is to get them ready for deer season. If you can't hit a squirrel with a 22 then you haven't learned patience and timing and shooting. In other words go to the range not the woods.

      Yep,well 3 farms we hunt, landowners don't allow rifle.. Even talk of not allowing rifle squirrel hunting on a couple state game areas..only talk now but DNR said it's gaining momentum..

      @@cibderos68 well im in pa, and that isn't issue. Air riffles were just passed for use on small game. Just took a newbie first timer yesterday. Tough hunting with the leaves. With shotgun would have limited in a couple hrs. Riffle I got one shy of limit took all day. But when to shoot safely, when not to take shot, accuracy etc all taught. The newbie missed twice. Whats he doing today? Practicing. It 8am and already got a text he was out back shooting targets. Its the same with archery. They passed cross bow why to keep people interested why its easier. Its gonna destroy the fundamentals of the sport. And then what

      @@mikecase9365 Crossbow been legal here for some time. I personally don't bow hunt much. I've hunted waterfowl all my life and both open at same time. Just to addicted to ducks and geese..lol...Hunt deer in gun season and some in muzzleloader season. I live near Mi,Ind. line and hunt both states for squirrel and waterfowl..Mi. only for deer.
