He used to spend hours every day practicing, now he spends that time learning new songs. He uses Guitar Pro software to learn new music. You should try that software if you haven't already, he could learn new songs in minutes with that.

Indeed, I am. All self taught, never had a lesson. This is after 3 years and 2 months of picking up a guitar for the first time.
