Fun fact: The Netherlands name in polish was recently changed from Holandia to Niderlandy.
@Ludvig Renström SJFe i mean belarus in russian literally means white russia so the old name kinda makes sense
Niderlandy sounds silly... I approve!
Yes funny

I’m Polish and this is correct
1:28 In Poland Netherlands are now called "Niderlandy" not Holandia
No. Accordingly to 'Komisja Standaryzacji Nazw Geograficznych poza Granicami Rzeczypospolitej Polskiej' the short name is still "Holandia". Only the full name is "Królestwo Niderlandów". Just "Niderlandy" is equivalent to English "Low Countries".

4:54 As a Wyomingite I can tell you that we don't exist. Don't move here, it's nowhere and most like it like that.
"Les Pays-Bas" roughly translates to "the low countries" (as in close or under sea level)
The same goes to "Os Países Baixos" (the portuguese version of "The Netherlands". Also means "The Low Countries").
And that's a literal translation of Nederlands.
We French say "Les Pays Bas" which means "Netherlands"
ah so like the region, always associate 'netherlands' with the country and 'low countries' with the region (ie. the 'benelux' region) and i often forget that the 2 are really the same

2:23 Thinking about these historical interactions actually kinda bothers me. Imagine you’re alive when foreign places are mysterious and unknown, when some dude comes up and tells you he’s from a place you’ve never heard of, and instead of asking for more information about that place you and everyone you and anyone else that these travelers will meet are instead just like “Nah, who needs context on whether Holland is a town or city or country, I really couldn’t care less.” Like what the hell ancient humanity.

1:28 in Czech we call it Nizozemsko but some people use Holland too even though it's wrong
Seriously? Because in Polish sometimes you can say "Niderlandy" instead of "Holandia" but nobody would say "Nizinne Kraje". :D
In old Czech the country was called Nyderlandsko, but today it's Nizozemsko or Nizozemí (literal translation) but lot of people call it Holandsko
To clarify, we don't always say Holandsko to refer to the Netherlands. Most of the time we say Nizozemsko. Literally translating to Lowlands.
7:33 they aren’t doing anything. It’s just… a family reunion… yeeeesssss…
Irish (the preferred name for Irish Gaelic) is going through a revival. It is a mandatory subject in Irish schools in the Republic of Ireland to help keep the language alive (unfortunately not in northern Ireland because it is still under British rule and they do not respect our culture) true it is spoken less than it was but there are a lot of people passionate about it's revival especially in those small Irish speaking areas called Gaeltacht. As an Irishman I can identify with the Ireland country all identity crisis. Especially being from northern Ireland. It's a bit like being a Mexican raised in Texas. You're patriotic but cultural removed from your heritage by circumstance
Interesting
WOOOOOOO YEAH BABY THAT'S WHAT I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR THAT'S WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT WOOOOOOO
I'm Irish and I did now that
Nice! Hugs to the Irish hommies, from Mexico.
I think once Northern Ireland rejoins the rest of the island (something that could happen sooner rather than later), the revival will continue. To respond to 4:55, the revival has begun.
In Spain, I used to hear Holland more often than Netherlands, but now they are using Netherlands more often.
I use Paises Bajos, because Holland is a province of Paises bajos (The Netherlands), also I learned time ago, when I was living in The Netherlands that we "conquer" them and i don´t even know it, nobody teech us that, and some people are very angry about Spain doing that.

1:34 The correct way to pronounce "Belanda" words is like this: 'Buy (without y, no be/bee) - Lan - Da' & why is it called like that, because in the period leading up to colonization, it refers more to the person not the country (Dutch = Belanda 🇳🇱) or (Portugis = Portuguese -> Portugal 🇵🇹)

There's a somewhat similar situation for Scots gaelic in Scotland although being before a large language spoke throughout Scotland it isn't as common now due to the Highland and Lowland clearances and the teaching of engish and being given into trouble if you spoke any gaelic
Also you pronounce Scots Gaelic as Scots /galik/ and Irish gaelic as Irish

Oke
I’m Irish 😮 hold up?
In Hungarian we call the Netherlands "Hollandia". This makes the sentence "Holland is in the Netherlands" perfectly normal in English but non-sensical in Hungarian, ("Hollandia Hollandiában van.", literally "Holland is in Holland"). We would have to say "The city of Holland" ("Holland város") to differentiate it from Holland, ("The Netherlands").
Lol this reminds me of the difference between the city called London and The City Of London.
And in Ireland,
Dublin is the name of the capital city and the name of the county it's in lol
1:45 the Welsh way of saying the Netherlands is "iseldiroedd" litteraly meaning "the low lands"

Really love Drews voice acting skills xD
As an italian i can tell we don't use LatinX because for most romance language words have 2 or three genders and for spanish LatinOS refer to a group of only men or mixed individuals (while LatinAS is a group of ONLY women)
Most romance language don't have a "neutral gender" things are either male or female.. in spanish "the table" is "LA mesa" which is a female noun, while in italian is "IL tavolo" which is a male noun (tecnically "la mensa" is a noun in italian but the meaning is slightly different)..
But in spanish "masculinity" is "LA masculinidad" still female.. so go figure..
In czech, The Netherlands are Nizozemsko which means "The low lands"
netherlands also means low lands and the dutch version (nederland) also means low lands.
The netherlands should be the lowlands
2:00 paises bajos means lowlands in reference to the fact that they have so much land under sea level

Yeah it's hardly like the US or its population has reluctantly been dragged into conflicts by the rest of the world pressuring them throughout the past few hundred years. So interesting is a good word.
The cold war is what really cemented the interventionist side of the US. And I'm not really blaming the US for that. There's a lot of valid reasons for what has happened and I don't think the USSR would ever become a positive force in the world.
And now everyone is stick with the system.

Also, latinx is used exclusively in the USA. It's impossible to pronounce in spanish speaking countries. Most will probably just say "latinos" when talking about them as a whole but technically the neutral way of saying it, both in spanish and portuguese, would be "latine"
Gender neutral, but only in spanish, would be latin@. Latin in English is a more sound choice
@@JuvenalFariasG I'm from brazil and we use latine and I heard the same from non-binary Argentineans
The thing about having x or @ is that those are not pronounceable under the normal rules of the language, they are more confusing for those that are not already familiar with neutral language and they will not be read by screen readers corrently.
@@ChaoticTabris But northern American liberals really like x, y and z. So please change your language on a basic level for people who don't even understand grammatical gender. /s
Genuinely curious why they've got a strong preference for those letters in their inventions. Are X, Y and Z minority letters that need to be included more?
Maybe was latinx just a mistake, that someone didn't want to be precise about what letter to put there so they used X as a placeholder and it stuck.
