Peptic Ulcers need to be diagnosed by a clinician and appropriate treatment needs to be monitored. Psychiatric signs and symptoms from antibiotics are a rare reaction and should be monitored by a physician. This does not mean to avoid antibiotics, the benefit in the face of a bacterial infection generally outweighs the risk, at the discretion of the prescribing physician for the specific patient's illness. Milk Alkali Syndrome has been increasing in incidence over the last decade, despite H2 Antagonist and Proton Pump Inhibitor over-the-counter availability in the United States. This could be due to the common use of over-the-counter preparations of calcium for the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis in post-menopausal women. Calcium carbonate is also frequently prescribed to patients with chronic kidney disease for the prevention of secondary hyperparathyroidism. Milk-alkali syndrome now accounts for more than 10% of the cases of hypercalcemia and is the third most common cause of hypercalcemia in hospitalized patients. Psychological reactions from antibiotics are absolutely real. I’ve experienced it myself and it was horrible. It could not have been anything else- just a couple hours after the first dose I felt completely out of control, like I was going crazy, sudden sobbing fits throughout the day- then 12 hours after my last dose I felt completely normal again. I immediately requested that antibiotic be listed as an allergy in my record and if I ever have to take it again I will need to take off of work and have full time babysitter for myself.
My dad went through the same thing and it was really frightening. We had no idea it was a reaction he could have.

When I was in nursing school in the late '70s, a woman had had kidney surgery because of blockage. They removed a single stone the size of a very large peach pit with spurs growing out of it that made it look like a huge, beheaded bug. I have a history of kidney stones and 50% CRF (chronic renal failure); as much as those small stones hurt I can't begin to imagine the pain this woman experienced.
It’s usually the Calcium Oxalate stones that have that hallmark spiked appearance! Thank heavens no stones in over a decade now, but I went into the ER once as I thought I was passing ‘one,’ and the X-ray 🩻 lit up with just about a dozen stones, consisting of various sizes, pretty much split evenly bilaterally! 😓 Needless to say I was scheduled for a lithotripsy within days! Another time, I go to the ER and I was certain that I was passing a stone, come to find out it was diverticulitis! 😣 Best one yet to highlight my crap for luck, after 12 major bone and/or joint surgeries, at age 39 I had to advocate for myself that there was something more to it, and yeah, right-o, I end up seeing a rheum and get a Dx for a rare connective tissue disease! 🤕 That said, I can’t imagine the hell this young lady went through! Thanks for being a nurse, BTW, I know you don’t get thanked enough! ✌️

Fatty foods, acidic foods and spicy foods can worsen the symptoms of an ulcer and trigger heartburn. Ulcers are related to Helicobacter pylori or NSAID use. The fact that doctors listened to her side effects and said “no those do sound really unpleasant, so try this instead as it might be better-“ was really helpful. Like, they were willing to work with the patient to find something that worked best for her…
I don't understand why so many medicines are marketed to adults in the USA as sweets and sold in large packets.
Because the mass population in the US are less educated then a lot of the developed world.

It's almost as if the daily recommended doses of things are on products for a reason.
When I had h pylori (the infection that causes stomach ulcers) - my first symptoms were anxiety and depression. Apparently as so much serotonin is absorbed in the stomach, infections like that can reduce absorption. When I went on the antibiotics at first it got worse, then it got better weeks later.
This seems accurate. I developed some form of stomach ulcer from acetaminophen sensitivity and had deep feelings of dread and gloom. It's a very visceral type of feeling.
I think I experienced similar with my thyroid medication Tirosint 😬😬😬 which is taken in an empty stomach 😬😬😬😬 I stopped and it took a while but I'm doing alot better stomach and mind. Your comments very validating and I tested negative for H pylori so wasn't that.

I took cipro 15 years ago and experienced toxic psychosis. I swear it altered me for life. I don't want to look at it that way, but it's hard to ignore one day you're cool and the next you're in this body that's totally neurotic and I had horrendous reflux and stomach pain. i went to therapy, did exercise, followed a strict diet, but I was sensitive to the smallest stressors. 2 years after cipro exposure I conceded to taking Paxil and it helped tremendously. I also needed glasses for far sightedness about the same time. I remember thinking things looked weird and went to an eye doctor. I'd always had 20/20 visiion.
Yeah ciproflaxin messed my stomach up and had me crawling to the bathroom to throw up. Never again.
I've taken slightly more than the labelled amount on antiacids because of my frequent heartburn. I knew there would be a ChubbyEmu video like this at some point, it's good to know what these things do and how to avoid things like this.

The labeled amount is based on safety limits and the average sized human for occasional use. If you talk to your doctor, they might tell you that you can safely take a larger dose on occasion, or prescribe another med that will work better. They might even be able to find the cause of the heartburn and maybe help you treat it. Unsolicited advice, but I know from experience that sometimes one thinks something is functional and working just fine, and but they have no idea how much better things could be if they were able to resolve the problem. I hope you have access to the medical care you need and that everything goes well!

ER doc here. I can attest that stomachache cases because of indigestion/heartburn are some of the most routine (non-emergency) complaints we get at the ER, but stomach ulcers are no joke; not only do they make stomachaches a common daily occurrence, but they run the risk of getting bacterial infections (specifically, _Helicobacter pylori_ infections, which Dr. Bernard alluded to earlier in the video).
_H. pylori_ infections not only aggravate the pain caused by existing stomach ulcers, but if left untreated, can worsen it, making the inflammation of the stomach wall even worse, and in certain cases, result in a cancerous tumor growing in the stomach.
The one proven treatment for such an infection is antibiotics (the specific course usually takes around 6 weeks to complete). As the case with JT's parents show, some people might not be aware of that fact and try to pin the blame on the ulcer entirely. Prematurely stopping the antibiotics while it hasn't entirely run it's course runs the risk of the bacteria not only surviving, but also developing antibiotic resistance against future treatment courses.
Hot, spicy and sour foods can aggravate existing ulcers, and so does coffee (and to a lesser extent, tea). Skipping meals or erratic mealtimes are triggering factors for heartburn attacks.

Pharmacist here, the usual treatment for H pylori is triple therapy with amoxicillin, clarithromycin and a ppi for 14 days. Im not sure where youre getting this 6 week regimen but i dont think its first line.

People with GERD can feel JT's sufferings.... I was treated for 1 year for GERD, still it didn't completely cured. I still suffer from Gastric and Acid Reflux and those times when food looked like poison to my eyes, I wish no one should ever go through such horror....

I actually like the chalky texture of antacids and hate the gummy texture. I only use antacids when I have to and even though they are good tasting I still treat them as medicine. I had no idea they could be so dangerous if taken improperly though! The more you know.

My husband is the youngest one in his dialysis clinic. Congenital issues, not even his fault. The toll it takes on his body is excruciating, and there's literally nobody I would wish it on (and I've wished nasty stuff on people, like I'm not at all a saint about it). This episode hits me harder than most. I struggle with GERD or acid reflux - it can happen if I eat anything less than 5 hours before falling asleep. I've resorted to drinking water and antacid tablets to help with the pain if I do end up eating something late. I've never taken more than 7 tablets in a 24 hour period because that's what the label says, but I understand the need to want to make the pain go away and also enjoying spicy foods. I need to look into a wedge pillow to see if that might help me.

I have a similar problem. I get terrible heartburns and headaches when I eat certain foods, especially spicy ones. Though, I’m pretty careful with antacids. They are a sort of medicine after all. Also, I heard that taking antacids consistently can make the acid problems worse over time because the stomach makes more to compensate. Always read the instructions and dosage at the back of the bottle guys.
Same, heartburn sucks. Especially when your trying to sleep. I've noticed drinking lots of water typically alleviates the symptoms. I think it dilutes to acid.
PPI medications basically solve heartburn conditions, you should seek advice from a gastroenterologist instead of "dealing" with the problem yourself. Long term heartburn can cause esophagus & G.I. cancers (someone who used to suffer but has no symptoms thanks to medication)
I always read the instructions whenever i take otc meds, because it tells you how long you can take it. As for me, if my stomach acid still wack even after regularly taking antacid and fxing my diet for 3 days straight, I'll go to doctor so they can prescribed me with ppi (even tho i hate it so much lol). Thankfully now, i know how to stabilize my stomach acid whenever i have 'flare up'.
You could have GERD or a Hiatal hernia, I was diagnosed with a hiatal hernia a few months ago

I think there’s some merit to the antibiotics affecting mental health. A doctor misdiagnosed me with an ear infection and gave me some oral antibiotics. After a few days to a week later, I became incredibly irritable and slightly depressed. I had never heard of antibiotics having that affect before, but the symptoms definitely went away after I stopped taking them.
Well antibiotics without an infection to kill will stay in your system hardly doing anything and find other things to mess around with.
I can attest to that. Months ago i got sick out of nowhere and was given antibiotics. Took about a week but i got better, maybe like a week and a later i suddenly woke up feeling off and it just spiraled into a full depression. I've had 2 week episodes before every few years or so usually without any warning so this have happened anyways but i had a suspicion that the antibiotics might have played a factor then
@@coolunusual lucky you, I had antibiotics due to a slight gum infection prior to a wisdom tooth removal. Destroyed my gut bacteria, made me catch c. diff colitis and it persisted for months. All they will prescribe you is antibiotics to cure it, but it forms spores and can very easily come back, and those antibiotics remove all healthy bacteria too and it's commonly caused by NOT having healthy bacteria, so it quickly becomes a spiral of intestinal inflammation/bleeding. Imagine going #2 10-15x a day but it's painful and with blood and it feels like knives in you.
Screw antibiotics! Took me over half a year to recover (most) of my gut health and the doctor treatments just made it worse and dragged it out longer.
Today I looked in my refrigerator and found a homemade dessert I made over two weeks ago and ate some. Then I instantly heard this channel’s narration in my head like “A college student ate 2-week old brownies. This is what happened to her spleen.” and then I had anxiety and went back into the kitchen and threw them in the trash. I can’t understate the effect this channel has had on my everyday life 😭😂

@@ilostsomethingonce Don't get over-cautious about expiration dates! I have a relative who will toss out anything that's "expired," because she doesn't understand what the dates on the food actually mean. Only *baby formula* is legally mandated to have a regulated date -- the rest of food is dated early enough to have a wide margin of error, and often is dated not for safety concerns but for enjoyable texture/flavor/etc., meaning you can still eat it for a while after the "expiration" date (sometimes even years after! really depends on the food).
As for homemade canned goods, you really need to know if the person who canned it knows what the hell they're doing. It's not "never worth the risk" -- home canning is one reasonable way to ensure long-term food storage. Heck, I learned some of the history of mankind's quest to preserve food... from playing a Minecraft mod called TerraFirmaCraft, which kinda walks you through early storage and preservation techniques, including stuff like making brine. There are several ways to make things safely at home, and it's good to be able to control the amount of extra ingredients (like preservatives) or know precisely what you're putting in your body. But you really need to learn how to do it right, because you're correct in that if you screw it up, you can end up with unexpected visitors like botulism.

I completely agree. I’ve even made myself throw up once or twice after something that could’ve been questionable. And I never take any sort of chance now.
This actually happened to me. The doctor said he had only seen two previous cases before mine. One was in a coma, and the other one died shortly after admittance. He did not know how I had come in under my own steam. My hypercalcimia caused cardiac symptoms and I was admitted to the cardiac unit. I was in real danger of cardiac arrest. I was lucky that it hadn't affected my kidneys. I was only hospitalized for two days while I was being flushed out and my electrolytes stabilized. Still, it took about a month for me to fully recover. Tums are Not candy!

Please read all the warnings, indications and instructions. Example, on my gummy vitamin bottle it states "Do not exceed recommended intake" which the directions state is to chew two gummies daily. If this woman ever wants to talk about her condition, we're here for her.

My Grandma, mother's side, was on dialysis.
She was in the end of her life and decided to end her dialysis treatments due to it being painful and draining, and spent her last days with our family.
I can only imagine how it must feel to be like this whilst young, it's lifelong if you can't afford other options.

Although this is a very extreme example, it illustrates why I think gummy medications aren’t that great - it’s fun to eat them and easy to take more than you should

I think the warnings on the label should be a lot bigger. Like cigarettes if you will. That way everyone will know they aren’t supposed to be eaten like candy. The vast majority of us are not eating more than the recommended dose
But...but it really isn't easy to take more than you should.
It's labeled as medicine, you consume it as medicine so you keep your dose. How could an adult confuse medicine with candy?
I'm surprised Chubbyemu didn't mention that the calcium carbonate is very different from calcium citrate, which is actually what doctors recommend for bone health (instead of antacids).
Most people don't need to supplement with calcium. They are more than likely needing magnesium in their diet. Too much calcium can cause heart issues. Taking vitamin D is better because it allows the body to properly use the calcium it gets from healthy diet.
and it's Vitamin D deficiency that's prevalent, especially with people staying indoors due to technology. People eat lots of food with milk, yogurts and cheeses so you don't need more calcium in your diet.
Just do what the doctor is recommending and if not working then get another opinion. Why does everyone want to do other peoples jobs

They also only spend like 15 minutes with you so how are they excepted to explain and understand everything about you. Your health is your responsibility. Doing proper research helps.

YES, my gods, just don't buy them if you're not going to use them, or use the bins for leftover medicines in hospitals and pharmacies so they'll be disposed of properly. Antibiotics in landfills can run off into the groundwater, cause bacteria to become resistant, and boom, everything-resistant tuberculosis. Hell, everything-resistant tbc already exists.
I don't know how it is in other country's but here in Germany you get the antibioticts in package sizes that you are supposed to take until the package is empty because if you stop to early some bacteria can survive and they can become immune to it.

i know this will get lost in all the other comments and you probably hear this a lot, but thank you for making these videos. i’m taking ap bio right now and i struggle a good bit with it but these videos help me understand some of the concepts we learn in there better and allow me to see real world examples of why this information is important. it also makes me feel really smart when i know what you’re talking about when it comes to cellular communication and hyper/hypotonic solutions haha. also anytime i’m about to do something stupid i remember your videos and usually decide to be smart about my decisions. also i struggle with emetophobia, it’s gotten much better over the years but i still have problems with it and i also get anxious during some types of medical talk and hospitals, but your videos have become sort of a form of exposure therapy for me that are also not too too hard for me to watch. thanks again keep up the great content
If memory serves me well, the discovery that bacteria can cause stomach ulcers was made by two Australians who won the Nobel prize for doing so. This came too late for my dad who suffered peptic ulcers all his adult life. He first had one during WW2 and had been told it was caused by stress that he wasn't man enough to handle. I think that made such a negative impact on him that he rarely went to see a doctor even when he was too ill to stand.
Yes you’re right. I think one of the researchers swallowed a solution of the bacteria and contracted an ulcer to prove the cause was bacterial. Sorry about your dad, it’s such a shame how what he was told had such an impact and it was simply because doctors at the time didn’t know.

Barry Marshal (who everyone remembers) and Robbin Warren (who everyone forgets to credit) I did my PhD in the lab next to the Marshal lab at UWA and was there the day the news came through about his Nobel Prize. I didn’t believe it at first as I was told by one of the post docs well known for pranks and people I know don’t win Nobel Prizes. It was Barry Marshal who drank the culture. He said it was the worst thing he had ever drank. I have held his noble prize. It was passed around the tea room after he did a talk about his trip to Sweden for the ceremony.

4 months ago I watched this but I didn't have gastritis so now it hits completely differently.
It's my first time visiting this place, but this is an informative channel that explains very kindly and accurately. Anything in excess is not good. Spicy food is in vogue these days and it's ruining people's intestines. Additionally, it was interesting to note that gut flora can affect mood. I also felt more empathy because I was not in a good mood. It's true that periodic upset stomachs make you feel depressed, but I'm still wondering if there's actually a connection.

Our toddler got in to our antacids but they were the chalky form and definitely got calcium carbonate poisoning. We even called poison control and they said it was impossible. But our little guy was messed up, confused, hurting, puked anytime he had dairy, and just had to poop it out. We took him to the hospital and they didn’t do anything either. So this was a vindicating episode.

I had a tumor that gave me hypercalcemia. 3 different ER doctors and an ENT ignored it and told me it was normal and I was anxious and exaggerating my symptoms. Had to advocate for insurance to pay for a specialist endocrinologist who actually did a proper scan on my neck and found it right away. Medicine sucks sometimes

I hate those doctors who act like they are doing their job but are just lazy and probably cheated on their medical exam. Sometimes people could meet a ton of doctors until there is one who actually isn’t lazy and knows what they’re doing. It’s just the worst when a doctor acts like you can walk it off. Just infuriates me
That happens alot in Canada so much so that I no longer trust doctors or hospitals. It's such a battle to get treatment from a doctor it's actually ridiculous. Doctors should face heavy fines for not doing their jobs properly.

similar incident happened to my mom, i forgot about what exactly happened but long story short doctors knew what was wrong but prescribed my mom some medicine and told her to do some basic home treatments like a heating pad while she was vomiting stomach bile everyday. eventually the doctors did surgery and fixed the problem
All of this was 100% her parent's fault for throwing out her meds.

This whole story is so frustrating. The patient and her family sound infuriating. If you don't agree with your doctor, that is fine. But please seek a second (even third!) opinion instead of ignoring your doctors and doing whatever you believe is right. That is how things like this happen...

It's hard to convince people if they just dont know any better. Happened to me and nobody listened and as the patient started to decline rapidly they resorted to alternative medicine when the only route to take at this point is dialysis. Then the pandemic hit and it was just starting so getting professional help was even harder and sadly the patient died. She could have had a few more years if she just went urgently on dialysis.
JT here had permament kidney damage so shes gonna take Dialysis for life and thats just harsh for a teen. The patient often doesnt know any better too so its up for grownups to guide their kids through these things and being dismissive of professional help can turn even the most not so serious medical problems severe enough to do permanent damage. Its a sad thing to see. Lifes harsh that way if you just let it do its thing and self help is a good idea and all but never think you know better than thr professionals.

I feel like it, but in relation to my parents and mental health. I was diagnosed with severe depression by a psychiatrist(with PhD, btw), and given a prescription on strong antidepressants, but they are "nah, it's not real, psychiatrists made myth about depression to sell costly pills, and lazy teens started using it as an explaination of their laziness. That's despite I literally cried every day because of incredibly strong feeling of helplessness and self-loathing.
Now I bought medicine I was prescripted, and take them secretly, feeling how my brain slowly becomes more capable of feeling happy. That was time when I reallized that I can't fully rely on my parents' experience through my life. I hope, I will be way more grown-up person when I finish recovering from that depression
