- Today I am fishing in North Somerset from 2 shore locations into the Bristol Channel targeting Bass, Rays, Smoothounds and pretty much anything that swims. I explain the rods, rigs and baits showing baiting up and also explain things about the species I catch.

Nice fishing mate
you're taking a french farmer who hasn't seen the ocean for 20 years on a nice fishing trip.
great many thanks
It is my pleasure. I hope that you enjoy joining me.
yeah takes my mind of the land and the 40 000 tomato plants in my greenhouses ,the risks and the responsabilities.
good luck on your next adventures
Fair play to all the French farmers who said no to their governments net zero bollox, keep protesting as the "awake" world is stood beside you.....unfortunately here we haven't got to the muckspreading yet
thé protests here added up to nothing, the government is screwing us harder than ever.We are going to sell a lot on the black market to survive merely survive.
screw all politicians
No farmers no food bless you🇬🇧❤️
just hearing the waves crashing and any fish on the line makes it worth watching your vids
Calming isn’t it.
In Schooldays as 'kiddos', we used to do the same. When the tide was down, we saw a lot. You are a Good Man, so is your Son. Long Live You and Yours'👌👍
Take care sir and have a great day. 👍🏻🎣
Let's see what the legend is up too now !! Love Sunday @Fishlocker day 🎣🦞🌊🤛🏻
Doing what I do best. 🤣
Been watching for a long time felt like a fishing trip with my dad genuinely found myself laughing when the doggies kept coming thanks for the giggles!
Sometimes the session doesn’t have to be the best to make it memorable. 🤣
My goodness John, wonderful. I would be so happy if my Mum could be there, she would love you. Love to the family, greetiings from Cyprus.
Have a wonderful day Jacqui and best wishes to your family.
And then it was finally Sunday again and time for a trip with The Fish Locker, sooo happy😊❤
Greetings from Denmark 🇩🇰
Greetings my friend. 😊🎣
I now understand the term " dog day " kinda frustrating but fun to watch. Thanks John, well appreciated.
Haha.
I used to watch your videos to relax after school when I was 16ish. I'm now about to go for my masters degree and I'm glad to have refound you. Cheers from Texas ❤
Welcome back. I hope you are still enjoying our videos. What are you doing for your masters?
@@TheFishLocker I'm working on my masters in counseling!
I totally agree with your sentiments John. It’s great to be out in the fresh air away from the crowds. To catch fish to me is a bonus but appreciated. Thanks for persevering, look forward to next Sunday.
Some days are just like that aren’t they mate. 🤷🏻♂️
Good work John. You stick onto doggies, there’s a big ass gilt waiting for me here… somewhere…😂🎣
Haha. You do get the better size gilts over your way.
Now that's what you call a doggie day! Still, a fish is a fish mate. great video and lovely scenery, as always. Thanks John.
The videos are honest mate. Some days are just like that.
Marvellous it's Sunday again and the fish locker. Excellent vid as usual. Loved it.
Cheers bud.
If I fell on those rocks I'd need a frigin medic. Great video...thanks!⚓
Haha. Ankle breakers.
It was great coming out with you John, doggies are better than blanks (only just) blooming bait thief! Got my new sweatshirt on Friday so well chuffed Pal.
Excellent. Hope it’s a lucky one for you. 👍🏻🎣
Doggies can be a pain John, we took a few young lads up to South West Scotland which is doggie central. They had never fished before and they were over the moon catching them so they have their use sometimes. Well made video as always, Thanks😊
Once again , great stuff . Thank you .
Thanks John.
@@TheFishLocker WESSEX RIG . 3/0 6/0 pennel on the running ledger with big squid or mackerel bait , 3/0 top snood with big worm bait . Can be deadly for that big bass close in .
Hi John. Try Dunster Beach on a spring tide. To the right, broken wall. To the left golf links. Worm baits and sandeel are the go-to baits. Cheers.
Can you send me a PM to the Fishlocker fb page explaining that please?
@TheFishLocker not on Facebook John just 47 years of fishing the Bristol Channel. Can't get out fishing now cause of ill health, but I'm happy to help out. I guess there will be plenty of information on the Internet. My best fish have come off these marks. Don't be in a hurry to leave as my best bass have come with the tide well into the ebb! Cheers and tight lines. Nick
@@Nicknofish Not even Blue Anchor Nicknofish? I used to support a couple of less able anglers and small children when I was on the farm in Withycombe.
@@Rhodietoo hi there, sort of spoilt the mark with the boulders. Cheers and tight lines 👌
The dogfish were probably following you today. But a nice video for us viewers, very relaxing for a Sunday evening. In Germany, ,,Schillerlocken`` are made from the belly flaps. They are skinned and smoked warmWarm greetings from Germany
Imagine they would be rather tough 🤣
We have a beach just like that on the Welsh side of the channel called Cold Knap , when you fish there your always doing the Cold Knap dance , one step forward two steps back .😆
🤣🤣🤣
Informative and beautiful location thanksforsharingyourtime
Any day spent fishing is a win! Thanks for sharing with us. Have an awesome week.
Thank you. Best wishes to you too. 😊🎣
What can I say John, your dogfish face says it all ,got to be in it to win it 😂😂🤦♂️🐟🎣
That’s it mate, can’t win if you don’t try.
WellI enjoyed this very much, gave me !quite a few laughs, saw awesome boulders ,beautiful water and sky!You live in a beautiful part of the world.Thank you for sharing!💥💥💥
As always it is my pleasure. 😊🎣
Hello John! Glad, as always, to see you. Doing maintenance on my Tundra today, but fishing next weekend!
Good luck to you mate. 👍🏻🎣
I've spent many happy hours fishing in the exact same spots as you... a great place to take the family on holiday for the weekend
Nice marks on a fine day. 👍🏻🎣
Another quality video mate! Thanks 🙏🏻
Glad you enjoyed it
Great programme , excellent job of showing fishing skills
Thank you. I am simply sharing what I know and love doing.
Great show John!
Thank you.
Always interesting, I always learn something. Thanks!
My pleasure. I am glad you find the videos interesting
Great fun. Always an adventure.
Thank you.
I was sat the other side of the channel this morning (porthcawl) - exactly the same story. Never caught so many dogs in all my life! 😂
Ridiculous amount of the things. 🤷🏻♂️
cracking video as always John really informative cheers mate 🎣
Glad you found it interesting.
Adz, that is amazing. It looks a different van. Can’t wait to see it in real life….❤
👍🏻
Everytime I take the car ferry across the Clyde from McInroys point to Hunters quay I always stand up top looking down at the water and wonder what is swimming around underneath me. People who don't like fishing just think it's boring standing watching the tip of your rod in the pouring rain and as we say in bonnie jockland, "it's blawin a hoolie" don't understand the thrill of what could be. You never know what you're going to catch as anything could take your bait, big or small. Tight lines John 👍
I always wonder that too.
Great video John
Great content
I bet you were sick of the sight of dogs by the time you left there your be glad to get back out on your boat.
Cheers John see you on the next one.
Aye mate. After the first 10 I was ready for something else. 🤣
Been there once, did a reccy without the kit and decided not to try carrying anything down that slope and across those boulders, instead collected line and leads from the 2nd mark you were at and freed a conger that was attached to one.
Ankle breaker territory. 🤣
I fished Seaton beach in Cornwall for the first time late February this year, had several Dog fish, a Pout and a nice small eyed Ray on a single sandeel.
Nicely done.
Hi John. As you know I'm an advocate of peeler crab as a number one bait. For your followers who are not familiar with foraging for the rascals,. Gently turn over the rocks in the rock pool, keeping the water clear, look for the crabs that have a pink tinge on their leg joints. Pick the fellow up, take hold of any leg, give it twist, and if is about to shed/peel, the shell will come away in your fingers.
Yes 👍🏻🦀
Remind me to make a note in my calendar John that the final week in April is Somerset Dogfish Fest!
Put it in the diary.
Great vidéo, thankyou. Dogfish everywhere in northern Brittany too....plus the spider crabs have arrived which make bottom fishing difficult off cliff marks. Spearfishing twice last week, the bass are there but too small......but as you say, it’s good to get out and appreciate nature. Dreaming of the arrival of smoothounds 😊
I had my first proper dive yesterday. Video should be up on Sunday. 👍🏻
Brilliant video mate loads of tips and advice I find your videos brilliant, can definitely vouch for the doggies lol they are non stop down on the south Wales coast too lol
Great video, as always 👍
Thank you very much mate. 👍🏻🎣
Hahaha 😂love the sticker at the end legend 🤛🏻🎣🦞
I put that there about 2 years ago. 🤣
Ace vid mate 👍 was out on the rocks with the daughter yesterday, few wrasse in the sunshine 🎣
Good man.
I blank most sessions, I'd be singing home catching all those haha
Haha.
I love your content, I live near the lougher estuary between llanelli and Swansea where I shore fish or spinning, good for bass and flats there's a big cockle picker from generations down here to 🏴
Nice place to live.
You still getting more fish then me. The fishing has been really slow over here in New jersey. Wishing you the best my friend. Love your videos
Best wishes my friend. 🎣👍🏻
Nice sounds in the forest 😉🍀👍
I thought so too.
Hello from Orlando Florida USA. THIS IS MRS Busbee. Glad I caught you. I do so enjoy your programs. Where is the son? I enjoy seeing him learn. Take care.
School day. 🤷🏻♂️
Shore hunter Wayne Hand knows that coastline well
As always fab video John 🎣👍
Yes I know Wayne.
nine and a half meter tides is wild. Here in south Florida a three foot tide is a king tide...
Some areas here are 10m
Happy to see your channel. From the Island of Zanzibar, well done!👌👍 Gonna renew my Sport Fishing fishing licence shortly, in Canada. $30 for a Sport Fishing Licence in any Province of Canada. Also, people use all kinds of techniques misunderstanding waters be it Oceans, Lakes, Rivers or other tributaries. Fantastic Good Man, Long Live 👌👍
We have visited Canada before. Wonderful place. 😊👍🏻
Plenty of line snags up there John 🤦 can fish well on its day but I'm yet to have one of those good days! The roads up there can be a nightmare too if you get stuck in traffic, makes it a long day for not a lot of fishing! Yet we still go back and try 🤣 another good video fella! Keep up the good work 👍
Them roads are hard work in the summer aren’t they!!
Great film
Thank you Steffen. 👍🏻🎣
great video again
Glad you enjoyed it Andy.
Love your channel ❤
Thank you so much 😊🎣
All that way to fish a Kennel lol, damn, was a very enjoyable video all the same though John, thanks for sharing this every sunday, always a good watch
Any time mate.
The king of the doggies strikes again but at least you didnt blank and if you kept some for the pots its a win win situation.. nice one Mr Locker crack on
I’ve got loads down home for the pots. 🤣
the best bait for rays is hering , an oily bait , its what i used on a boat off the kent coast , over the goodwin sands ,rays gallore
Herring is 100% dogfish bait.
Thank you John.
My pleasure John.
We have a regulated commercial fishery for 'dogfish' here in the US. It is my understanding most of the catch is sent to Europe. When I was a kid in the '70s, the seafood company Gorton's marketed a breaded "fish stick' made with dogfish. I distinctly remember it because in my mom's family there were many commercial fisherman (my uncles and great uncles) and they thought it was a sad joke, but it made money. They caught more desirable species for our table. We ate cod, pollock, bass, mackerel, flounder, etc., and fresh water fish like trout. The two species of shark I have eaten are Mako and Porbeagle, cut in steaks, and they are delicious.
Your dogfish we call Spurdogs I believe. 👍🏻🎣
@@TheFishLocker I think you are correct. We have smooth and spiny (spurdogs) 'dogfish' here in Maine. I am a fan of scientific names but that is not normal parlance. They are both "trash fish'' to us in 'regular conversation'. But, I've found some 'trash fish' fresh water species, like river chub, pickerel or yellow perch, are good eating. I'm willing to give both what we call 'dogfish', smooth or spiny, a try.
Can only catch what’s in front of you , shows that your just like us 😂
That’s absolutely true. You can only catch what’s there. 👍🏻👍🏻
Fished Mevagissey harbour yesterday😢😢 blanked. Not even a nibble..I know there's fish somewhere....all in John Locker's freezer!!😂😂
🤣🤣
@TheFishLocker going to try again at high tide tomorrow. Me and the Mrs fishing the tide up off the outer harbour wall..I may be getting my fish battered from the chippy tomorrow John.
At least you know that your rigs are working 😂
Very true
There must be millions of those doggies John, all the other channels I watch are inundated with them... I suppose they save a blank 😂
Thanks for the upload John.
I don’t know if you can even count them as a blank saver?
@@TheFishLocker Can you not take a few for the freezer and use them in your lobster pots?
@@PatBot - I have hundreds down my way to use for lobster bait.
Travelled up to Somerset many years ago several times. Fished Minehead and Blue Anchor. Other than hundreds of dogfish, the only things I can recall getting were a few small congers and one small codling in winter. It is a fun area to fish, but a challenge to avoid the doggies!
A challenge I failed. 🤣
The Dogfish Locker 😂 You need to speak to the Kiddys and get a signature dogfish rig made
Haha. For me, that’s any rig!!
Great video. Doggies are better than blanking however much of a pain.
Haha.
Thanks for the video noss
My pleasure Tim.
We all get those days seen you on a video up at Conwy you still need to get to the Menai Straits 🎣🎣🐟 keep up the great content and tips John
I’m heading up later in the year to fish with Gav up Menai.
You won’t be disappointed 😀🎣
A good tip for fishing the channel is to bring another rod rest. It makes life much easier, as you know, the tide ebbs and floods so quickly
It wouldn’t make the walk to the mark any easier. 🤣😉
@@TheFishLocker 😂
Great to see 😃
Thanks 😉👍🏻
I'll be there for several days in two weeks time (with my long nosed dog fish skinning pliers).
I always worry about dropping something important like the front drag knob from a fixed spool reel amongst those big rocks at WM, because it would probably disappear down amongst them forever.
Bait elastic goes missing in the blink of an eye. 🤣
Awsome video John. those dogfish a bloody pest😂🎣
Haha.
great video john pity about all the doggies ,still good info two lovely looking marks cheers john stay safe
Thank you Lyn.
A good guess to where you are fishing is the gasworks minehead can b real great fishing down there high or low water tight lines mate happy fishing 👍🎣🐟🐟🐟🦈🦈
Plenty on dogfish anyway. 🤣
Very much the same just up the road at Blue Anchor…dogfish after dogfish for the 4 nights I spent there
Hard work isn’t it.
Set up a Rock Salmon cooking demo with your father in law. Fillet, skin, soak in milk then fry. I used to make Shark Nuggets for my students when we dissected spur dogs I caught. James would enjoy them. American Summer Flounder like the white belly strips, talk about a tough bait! Bet the bass and pollock would go for them or Turbot and Brill. If you can't beat them... Eat them!
We’ve got a dogfish catch and cook on the channel.
@@TheFishLocker Missed that one, need to check it out. Cheers
Dogfish everywhere up here the solways full off them as you know john 😢 with your trip other week
You need some skate to hoover them up!!
If you have the patients to skin the doggies, you could sell them, or catch enough of them to sell to commercial whelkers, so they can be used as bait in the pots. Another Sunday saver cos there's crap on tv, thanks John 👍
Dogfish sell for £7 a box. So at that size they’re about 20p each.
@@TheFishLocker ye, dogs not puppies aye John 😂 rock salmon is what chip shops use to sell, but nowadays the Chinese will buy any kind of fish off us. Guaranteed if you skinned a load of doggies, took em to your local Chinese takeaway, they would buy them, and probably in future to because the meat on those fish is delicious 😉
They love dogfish, cats aswell I've heard 😉
I have to admire your patience and persistence! Oh to have just had one extra species, not as if there was any size to them either...
No one can say I didn’t give it 100% effort. 🤣🎣
God loves a trier. Was expecting you to wangle out a bass on the morning session. 👍
I was hoping for one mate it just didn’t happen. 🤷🏻♂️🎣
Dogfish mixed with spuds or rice dogs would love it i should think as would cats check up with producers of dried foods. good video John.
👍🏻👍🏻
Greetings from Redondo Beach 🇺🇸 Nice fishing video 🌷
Greetings.
Dogfish go great in a fishcake mix or even as an added to a fish pie. Best boiled as that gets rid of the skin before adding to your pie/cake mix👍👍 love the posts
👍🏻👍🏻
again awesome stuff /content mega channel
Cheers John. All the best bud. 👍🏻🎣
Ankle breakers those boulders John . But I think that there is no market in the fishing that we have so many dogfish , years ago you could buy it in the fishing and chip shops and the preparation of pulling the skin of the flesh
£7 a box they go for commercially. Pennies each.
I've fished that Mark before and been on my bottom loads of times
Haha.
I'm not sure where you are there John. There's a place just up the road from us called lilstock. The seabed is far better there for fishing. Lovely little spot as well on a nice day.
I shall have a look for that place. 👍🏻🎣
Love dogs fish but they need to be a pound and half when i went there for cod all the way from Kent one small whiting so beat me how ever thank you for this and all the other films
They can be a nuisance can’t they.
Great video 👋🏻🤗🥰👍🏻🐟🐠🎣
Glad you enjoyed the video
Like a day of nothing but hardhead catfish on the Texas gulf! Lol
Haha. And gaftops!!
I would have packed in way earlier if I'd been 'hounded' that much.. But leaving your mark on the way home!? Shocking! 😆
Haha. That sticker has been there for nearly 3 years mate.
Thanks again John. I eat doggies but they are a pain to skin. Lovely pan fry or on the bbq 😋
Haha. Yeah they are mate.
Oh mate, your face says it all! You are the best at catching dogfish! Shame it isn't what you are after. Great video as always though, very enjoyable to watch you no matter what you are catching. Best of luck next time.
You can only catch what’s in front of you. 🤣🤷🏻♂️
Yer John, those boulders you were fishing from are known locally as ' Somerset Sand '!
🤣🤣
another good vid
Thanks Billy.
Another great video from The (Dog) Fish Locker......just kidding, you catch what you catch, and they like you.....
That’s it mate. You can only catch what’s there
What can I say John if there’s a market for dog fish you would be a wealthy man, surely you can make a dog fish chowder or marinate them in satay sauce and skew them and put them on the barbecue you never know it could be nice.well done bud thanks for sharing you have the patience of a saint
Haha. If there was a proper market for them I’d be able to afford that new boat. 🤣
Wow 40 dog fish!!!!! Thats got to be some kind off record mate. I know it's better then a blank but a bit of Variety. But you can't help what fish are in front of mate. It's a bit like whiting on the east cost you catch catch any thing els but that. Hopefully the wormer months will bring the good sessions. I really liked the look of that second mark mate. Good effort tho enjoyed the vid. All the best and tight lines 🎣🎣🎣
You’re right bud, some days it’s just impossible to catch anything else. Have a good one mate.
