not much. war metal is a bit more evil with longer songs, grind tends to be a little more punk. though there are many bands which blur the lines between both. they are both differing combinations of metal and hardcore.

The difference is that grindcore has been around since the mid-1980s and comes out of hardcore punk. At its inception, grindcore’s lyrical themes were mostly about politically left topics - war, corporate greed, religious corruption, starving people whose countries were ravaged by colonialism, sexism, racism, ignorance, etc. It took a big influence from anarchist UK bands like Discharge who sang about these topics.
As the musicians in grind bands were also playing in early death metal bands, there was cross-pollination between genres that created different types of grind... some of it was more metallic, some of it was more like hardcore; some of it was political, some of it was about gore, shock, madness, alienation, and death. Some grind bands used (and still use) gore and death as metaphors for political oppression and struggles.
On the other hand, war metal was innovated by bands like Blasphemy who were into grindcore. It tends to have more themes like those common in black metal - power, occultism, human or cosmic evil - and is frequently made by people whose political leanings are more toward the right (or even the far right). Some war metal bands deal more straightforwardly with the political angle, some use metaphors, and some don’t really talk in a concrete way about anything worldly.
Grindcore (and offshoots like mincecore) will have more riffing and grooves as well as a wider range of tempos; those subgenres are frequently still made by and enjoyed by people with more leftist political leanings. Goregrind keeps the riffy, groovy, tempo-changing musical elements but doesn’t have a particular political compass and sings about gore. Pornogrind is also riffy and groovy, maybe has some different tempos (but not necessarily every band likes to change up tempos - some of them just blast), and takes obvious thematic cues from goregrind but with more sexual content. A lot of leftist grind fans don’t enjoy pornogrind, and a lot of it has lyrics that are meant to piss off leftists,
War metal is more likely to create a dense wall of sound with tremolo picking, distortion, and blastbeats throughout a whole song or almost all of it with non-blast parts as accents. The repetitive, hypnotic song structure and wall of sound are more like other black metal, which took influences from electronic music (at least in the case of bands who made their name during the 80s and 90s). Grindcore is more likely to use more rock or even blues-based harmonics and alternate between blastbeats and other beats like polka beats with blasting as accents.

Still not a fan of (most) music with "grind" in the name, but I've grown to tolerate stuff like this the more I listen to it. It's like death metal with shorter songs, almost. Still prefer crust or d-beat.
