  • This has changed the way I song write, produce and mix my music. It has made my work flow so much smoother and faster. In this video I show how to turn your midi drum plugin, into separate channels in your DAW. I'll be showing how to do it with EZdrummer 3 and Cubase 12.

Glad you found it useful! This has changed my world massively! With the quick testing I've done, EZDrummer takes very little CPU power. So I can't imagine it would be a slow down. In my day to day projects I just use this method. But on my major distribution tracks I still will export as wavs and run them thru my WA73 and WA76 analog gear. But I bet 99% of people would know if I did that or not.

I have been doing this process for over 20 years!!!

Excellent video. I take it you can just set this up as a template. How does it effect the channels if you switch out drum kits? I have Superior Drummer 3. This could be neat. I can use the effects in Superior drummer 3 along with plugins and outboard hardware with Cubase 13 pro.

Yes! I have mine always setup in a template. And depending on which drums you use, you might need to adjust the outputs on the plugin mixer. So in EZ Drummer is I change the room the kit is in, there are some thar automatically combine the toms on to one stereo channel. But I use the same drum room 99% of the time, so if I change the drums in that room, nothing needs to be re routed. Hope that makes sense!

Dude! This is so gangsta! I too was exporting the wave files… THIS is a game changer!! Appreciate the info!! one question..do you still see any benefit in then recording each drum? Will it save CPU by not running EZ drummer each time you roll your track?

As a hint, I have an ableton template which has all my plugins setup. I have all my tracks pre-coloured, pre-grouped. EZ Drummer is mapped to the tracks automatically, so i don't have to think about it. I just use it and everything shows up in the track. Same thing for my vocals, as an example.
    I have
    Vox group
    Then
    Vox Main
    Vox Harmony 1
    Vox Harmony 2
    Vox Punches
ALL of these are pre-mixed with the EQ's and auto-tune DISABLED. So I record and comp, then just turn them on and i'm g2g with minor tweaking.

I love using my templates. The musical styles for me change sometime on the daily, so have a ball park starting point can be super handy. Mine are mostly setup with the Busses for drums/percussion, guitars, bass and synth.

Is this a setup to over process, is not EZDrummer, already treated kits?

Their kits sound good as is, but most people I know and myself prefer to give them some more love. And I'm not entirely sure what all they do before shipping the product. It would make sense for then to keep them as un treated as possible. Just great sounding drums in a great live room.
